A small float like they use on long lines on the hook trace works wonders to keep bait away from the crabs. Circle or recurve hooks give a better hook up rate surf casting. I use main of 5.0/6.0 and keeper of about 2.0 for pilchards on a good day every bait is a fish. I also recommend tapered shock leaders less chance to snap off on cast, no issues with finger cuts and plenty of power when you deal with a fish in the wash at your feet .

Another awesome video thank you Jase. I don't do landbase partly because I wrecked my right shoulder a couple years ago and partly because I love being on my boat with a line in the water when I can afford the gas. I always enjoy your videos and love seeing the Far North specially.

Cheers BB I started surfcasting with my dad back in the early 70's so it's in my blood, I actually prefer it over my boat fishing but getting older it is a lot easier to step in the boat than walking to the spot X's you need to do in our days :-) Tight lines

Wow, mate. I've tried this running rig and break away sinker combo yesterday. Caught 2 decent sized snapper within an hour. Had a lot of fun fighting with the fish appreciate for your video.

I use a breakaway cannon for releasing braid and it works really well. If you wind the braid 3 times you can set the drag before you cast. Thanks for the great videos.

Hey mate, thanks a lot for this video. I used to fish with my old man back in the 80s and 90s and recently got back into it - bought a cheapo surfcaster and have been having real trouble casting - your tips are invaluable for me, so thank you! Can't wait to try your technique out!

Mate, great tip about casting. I was looking at getting a breakaway cannon for my biggest rods (4.2m and 4.5m). I'm going to try your tip first. If this works with braid then I'm in bro. Thanks heaps.

Thanks Jase! I'm a real fan of your videos, I really love how you are so calm and explain everything. Out of curiosity, how often do you catch something vs don't?

Cheers Allan for the kind words.... Our catch rate isn't to bad depending where we are fishing, the north is a little more untouched so that really helps. When I first started rock fishing around the bays back in the early 90's it was just like how the north is, there weren't a lot of people back then doing it and 20lb fish weren't uncommon - the average was that nice 8-12lb and I had a spot that I use to call "the big fish highway" When a mate was keen to try and hit the 20 club I would take them 2mins down the road and they looked at me very weirdly until the 10-15lb fish started sliding up onto the rocks then the bust offs really shut them up. It was an amazing spot that held plenty of 20's up to my PB of 30lb (estimated) as it weighed just over 28lb guttered.... Everyone has those bad days but to cut my bad days down I normally fish those tides and times that I know the fish will pretty much be there to have a good chance so we normally catch something - you can see in this vid it was hard for us but this was due to the fish not yet being in close or the Harbour - if they aren't there they just aren't there but I lucked a nice Trev. It was probably our hardest trip regarding fish catching but we still managed a few nice fish each day in the boat. Tight lines

Hi JG It's an amazing place alright - as shown in the vid even we don't catch sometimes but for me it's the place I'm in and although the fishing can be slow at times a fish in the bin is just the bonus for me especially fishing in such amazing places....sometimes the fish are there and sometimes not, one day you will fish it with nothing or slow fishing but get it right and it can be all on so you just have to keep at it and figure out that spot. nice vid, mate. When I surfcast with 6kg mono mainline I use a shock leader to stop the main line snapping on the cast (one or two turns on the reel stops that happening). Do you ever get that happening with braid as the mainline? You mention only a short leader from the braid to the top swivel, so I presume you're casting with braid over your finger.
@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Hi T_68 I've never used a shock leader nor have anything snapping - yes the braid runs right through from spool, finger to swivel that sits just out from the end guide. What I have learn't over the years is not hooking the line on my finger - all I do is take up that tension with the tip of my finger so it's not at all flicking from the finger. It's sort of like my tip is taking over what the bail roller does so if you push your finger forward a little from your roller that's all you need to take up that tension. Like most I use to have the line sitting in that first crease of the pointing finger but no longer do that so now like in the vid I just point and it releases with no line whip to the finger.
