Jaska Raatikainen recently shared a funny story about this song: When they were recording this back in the 90's, he had problems with insane 200bpm tempo and double bass parts in the studio. After many failed attempts, the frustrated drummer turned to Alexi Laiho and asked him if they could possibly reduce the tempo because he felt it was impossible to get the double bass right. Alexi was very strict about the arrangement as usual and refused to make any changes, but after long and exhausting negotiations he finally gave up and agreed to drop the tempo all the way to... 199 bpm. He told Jaska that was all the help he was gonna get, so Jaska had no chance but to raise his playing to the next level and eventually he nailed the song . Says a lot about the integrity and passion of the band at that time when they were still pretty much kids.

@Luger03123 жыл бұрын
All a matter of techique. If you lack technique, it's like a sprint where you try to not fail because your concentration is needed for the physical aspect. If your technique is good, its doesn't feel like that at all. Notice how those drummers have their shoulders relatively tucked in an relaxed, playing from their wrists and fingers (as well as their ankles regarding the bassdrum). Once you can smoothly control your sticks no matter what joints you play from and switch back and forth it's rather relaxed. Coming from a Self-Taught drummer who has been in the "sprint" phase way too long until he figuered it might help to work on his technique...

Weird, he has 2 bass drums but a double pedal, so the one on his left isn't used. It's basically there for looks and to hold a tom?
@niclasklein39166 жыл бұрын
He uses a drum rack so no Tom holding there. The 2nd bass drum is mainly for good looking. You also don't have to tune both of your bassdrums since he plays without triggers
@ElioRigonat6 жыл бұрын
Almost no bands today use two kick drums with two pedals, but bring the other one as an aesthetic thing (like the empty Marshall stacks for example). Why would you bother tuning two kick drums the same every damn show when it's literally almost impossible, and makes no change in the sound for the better?
@nocomment36005 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ Ive always noticed a difference in my own playing atleast , as far as tuning the key is not to match the bass drums the thunder comes from alternating tuning. Also in an area of everyone shrinking kits its nice to see the quad toms 2 on the floor and set of canons at the ready.
@rileychidley63744 жыл бұрын
A lot of metal drummers actually use the 2 kick drums but a lot of them use triggers these days so tuning doesn’t really matter
@spudmagnum73944 жыл бұрын

I've only seen videos of Jaska playing with a double kick slave/pedals on a single bass drum. The 2nd one is probably a spare in case of puncture of the head. It's faster to switch a spare bass drum than to change a broken head during a Live show. Looks of double bass drums is also more rad, of course. As for the double pedals, I've seen him use: Pearl Power shifter (very old black & white video), Pearl P2052C Eliminator double chain with blue cam and in this one, he's using the Pearl P3002D Eliminator Demon direct drive, I think...

Aaron I do that also! I like the feel of 2 bass drums on my kit, makes it easier for me to figure out where everything goes when I take it down and set up. I attach the slave pedal to the other bass drum so it pretty much feels like you’re playing both kicks. Also it’s easier to get an even sound so you don’t have to worry about having to tune both absolutely perfect... unless you’re triggering

He's a great drummer, but he could benefit greatly from practicing with a metronome a couple of minutes a day. Bpms are all over the place... specially on fills.
@ElioRigonat6 жыл бұрын
Um how about no? Being always metronome correct is literally a trend in modern metal, most bands would never record an album to a metronome but to their drummer who would record first (with the guitarist playing into his ear instead of the metronome). Examples - Slayer, Slipknot, and even Meshuggah on a couple of songs. Having groove and being human is now considered "being all over the place". Fuck your BPM bullshit, go play to a drum machine then.
@LordBaktor5 жыл бұрын
Wether you record with a metronome or not, it's good to practice with one to improve your own sense of timing. Speeding up in fills is not "having groove" it's a well known bad habit among drummers.
