Day in the life of a Dentist // my LASIK surgery & recovery

Hey guys!! Welcome back for another dentistry vlog :) In this video you will see what my day is like in the Beaverton (Oregon) clinic with a full day of surgical extractions, fillings and exams. Life is crazy as a new dentist, to say the least. But most of all, in this vlog you will get an in-depth view of what the LASIK eye surgery process was like with NVISION in Tigard, Oregon with Dr. Bruce Madsen. As a dentist, depending on glasses and contacts has been such an inconvenience, so being able to finally get LASIK eye surgery feels like a huge milestone. The process was honestly so smooth! Thanks for sharing this vlog! I asked my mom about getting Lasik (even though my eyes aren't that bad, I've always hated wearing glasses and contacts). She basically scared me out of it, talking about the complications and how it could permanently affect my vision which is super important as a dentist. Glad to see a success story from someone in the field, I think I'm definitely gonna have to get it at some point down the line when I get older.

Lasik is so amazing. How many years had you been wearing glasses / contacts and waking up to a blurry world until you put your glasses on? I'm thinking you likely had good eyesight until you were in middle school or somewhere between 12 and 15 years old and you first noticed you couldn't see the the writing on the blackboard at school. As an optician that was the most time years I was fitting girls with their first glasses. It wasn't because you were sitting too close to the TV or reading books in dim light. But mostly due to several things. One being genes, meaning that if either of your parents wore glasses when they were younger your odds of needing glasses was at 50% and if both parents wore glasses your odds were then 100%. Also between the ages of 12 and 15 is when your body grew the most as well. That growth contributed to your eyes changing As your body was growing your eye were also being lengthened and that lengthening brings on "myopia". Myopia is the medical name for nearsightedness. For boys, their growth period came a few years later. You may remember that boys the same age as you were always shorter than you. So I didn't see boys until they were a few years older getting their first glasses. Do you remember how many increases you had before your final prescription of -3.75? Your first prescription was most likely somewhere around -.75 or -1.00 at that time. But every year or so you were getting increases in your glasses and contacts. That also was caused by your continuing growth which can continue into your early twenties before you stop growing and your eyes become stable. Hopefully your eyesight was at -3.75 for at the very least a year before you had your surgery. Actually 18 months or more is even better in my opinion. Also being a fulltime contact lens wearer I hope your doctor had you stop wearing your lenses at least 2 weeks prior to getting lasik. I'm sure he explained to you why you needed to stop wearing contacts. But in case he didn't i will tell you anyway. When you wear contacts as your main form of vision correction they actually form a ridge on your corneas where they sit all the time. That ridge needs to be smoothed out for the best results of lasik. So I'm sure you probably hated having to wear glasses for those 2 weeks. This was especially true with you being a dentist and needing your special magnifiers attached to a pair of non-prescription glasses to see in a patients mouth. So you looked rather silly having your prescription glasses first on top of your head and then in front of your other glasses so you could see their faces clearly. Actually I was surprised you were able see pretty well when you had your glasses off while eating lunch and you were checking your schedule for the afternoon. I barely saw a tiny squint from your eyes. Of course I don't know how close your notes were to your eyes either. I'm sure you aren't going to miss your contacts, but I wonder if you might start missing your glasses at some point? If you only very rarely wore your glasses then you may not miss them at all. Over the years i have bene surprised by how many after a few years not needing glasses begin missing their glasses. They claimed they actually liked their glasses and how they looked wearing glasses. What they didn't like was not being able to see hardly anything without their glasses. Wearing glasses, as you probably are aware of, has become extremely popular with women of all ages and especially the younger women as a really nice fashion accessory. And you clearly looked very attractive wearing your glasses before your surgery. I'm sure you got quite few complements on how good you looked wearing glasses during that time didn't you? You know you can go on-line to any number of really good glasses sites and order yourself a really cute pair of glasses to wear as a fashion accessory. You can even get the lenses with blue light blocking protection for few dollars more for screen use as well as fashion wear, Here is 4 sites my girls in the store were often shopping for their glasses from. Zenni Optical, Lensmart, Eye Buy Direct and Payne Glasses. All of these sites have glasses for under $20.00 and most offers the blue light blocking for under $17.00. additional.

I know a lot of petite dentists!! It honestly has its benefits as far as having small agile hands and patients loveee gentle providers :) you’ll get used to doing things with people watching in dental school 😉 you got this!!!

I still use my ergos but definitely still default to my q-optics 🤷🏽‍♀️ I just feel more comfortable in them but the ergos are still great, I think it just comes down to getting used to them and personal preference.

A lot. I have $527,000 in student loans. It will probably take me 25-30 years to pay it back if I pay the minimum required amount monthly/yearly.
