Very worth mentioning as well - the cheaper a flute is, the more likely a repairer won't want to touch it, as adjustments won't hold and the repair will possibly end up costing more than the instrument. Whereas, the better the flute, the easier it is to repair, and to keep it playing for a lifetime!

@@PiggycenteThese low-cost instruments are very difficult to repair to everyone's satisfaction. The last thing a technician wants is for someone to be dissatisfied with his/her work and bad-mouth the repair or repair staff. And - parts, if needed, are often difficult or impossible to obtain through the usual major suppliers. Also, as mentioned above, repair/regulation costs can very quickly outstrip the cost of the instrument, leaving the purchaser/owner confused and disappointed. These sorts of occurrences can often leave the student discouraged and wondering if these will be long-term problems and difficulties. Bottom line? You really do get what you pay for - parents who opt for one of these low-cost alternatives are generally placing dollars ahead of their child's likelihood of success. I worked in a music supply shop, with an excellent repair staff and we generally turned away repairs on these instruments, due to unpredictable results and outcomes. Further, we could not guarantee work performed on bargain musical instruments.

@@PiggycenteGiven their poor construction, cheaper flutes can often be frustrating and unrewarding, and are often not worth the time of a decent repairer. Most repairers' reputations are worth more to them than getting in the habit of putting their seal of approval on an instrument that's going to fall apart again within months.

@@PiggycenteRepirer Here! I learnt how to repair on cheap instruments like Elkhart and because of how they’re made, as @flutetree said, they don’t hold a repair and then that’s our name as a repairer being tarnished. As a repairer we rely mainly on word of mouth, traditional marketing methods do not work. Also, because the instruments metal etc is much more bendier because it doesn’t have the tensile strength it’s really hard to get a good padding and take us much much longer than it would on something like a Yamaha 211 and so we aren’t working cost efficiently. I would be very interested in making a collaboration with @JasmineChoi going into further detail of what makes a cheap flute cheaper. However, I am English so it would need to be a video call if she was up for it! EDIT: Also yes, as most of us musicians ourselves, we want to give you a playable instrument back that’s worth the money. We don’t actually make as much money as you would think either 😅

I love these kinds of videos because a master of anything can make the lowest level of their craft sound good, but the amount of effort needed will make a beginner go crazy in a short amount of time. It’s important to acknowledge this with students.

Interesting! One thing I’ve noticed in this and similar videos, is when pro musicians play different tier instruments, the difference of sounds quality isn’t that crazy. But when I upgraded my flute from a 500 to a 3000 euro model, the improvement in sound seamed waaaay more massive to me. I almost think that upgrading instruments has more impact on the growth of a student. While a pro can make any instrument sound amazing. What do you think Jasmine?

Thanks for this comment! My opinion in this video was that if anyone buys this flute and starts learning, it’ll get them a good first year. Then it’s time to move on to the next flute (because it’s probably not repairable)..!

I think the most of important matter for a cheaper instrument, is to sound the right pitch. Once it can sound the right pitch, since is a cheaper instrument the sound quality doesn't matter at this point. Even the better player can make cheap instrument sound good, because they have perfect techniques, power and control. Therefore, beginner should focus on these skills for improvement. I have heard good players make cheap guitar sound good, cheap violin sound good.

This is a great video! I like how you mention that you can work to make the $69 flute sound really good. I mostly heard the difference as slightly more airiness, random air puffs, and very loud key sounds. The main thing I would worry about the flute from amazon is that it might break down more easily and a repairman would find it very difficult to repair.

True, that said for $69 you could get one of these once a week, throw them away for 14 years straight instead of getting a $50,000 instrument. Obviously the playability should be good enough not to frustrate the learning process.

Your ability to produce such clear sound switching from a brand new instrument to one you are familiar with is amazing. I also play flute. I just upgraded two years ago to a Yamaha allegro. My first flute which I still have is Gemeinhart and it plays beautifully but I can't do as much dynamic variation because it is older and harder to play. I did try a newer Gemeinhart out when we were trying to figure out what I was upgrading to but I personally preferred the Yamaha more.

Immediately I noticed that Flute 1 was the cheap flute, but the difference is minor. My first flute was an Artley flute, paid a $150 dollars for it used, and it has a very good sound, they don't make those anymore. My second flute is a professional flute, a Yamaha 581, it's $4,000 new, but I paid $1,400 for it on an auction on eBay. I find both flutes equally great.

I've heard that the main issue with the Amazon instruments is that they just don't last and you'd usually have to replace them within a year, because they're basically unrepairable. I've also found used student Gemeinhardt flutes for the same $70 price point as this, they're certainly not in brand new condition but they work just as well

Great video 2x👍 I guess we cant all afford a $50,000 flute but we can mostly afford the other. It might be OK for child to see if they want to learn the flute for a couple pf year or so, the sad bit would be it costs more to service than buy a new one. I bought a used Pearl solid silver instrument, you can get more for your money just buy from a reputable source.

This nicely demonstrates that the flute material has no bearing on the timbre. There was an interesting comparison done between different flutes (nickel, silver, gold, platinum) each played by several professional flautists. The flautists sounded different from each other but sounded like themselves, regardless of the material.

I think the noise is because it's new. Mine is already starting to wear out in the area where it touches the lips and some keys. I don't know if it will last me 2 years, and I don't even know how long I should use a flute like this.

I wonder how it compares to more expensive student flutes like my Gemeinhardt 2SP. Only other one I played before was a Nuvo 2.0 which is made of plastic so very different. I love my Nuvo because I can take it camping with me but it has a tendency to skew flat and the tone is nowhere near the same as the 2SP. I find the 2SP easier to play in general. The price of the Gemeinhardt is a bit high though for people who aren't sure yet though.

Then as I progressed a lot now I have a French violin because I’m French so I have the luck as a native French to have a good price for a violin made in France from the late 19 century, it cost me 1700 dollars, but it’s a very good quality for a maker violin it’s very cheap my violin teacher choose it for me, and I agree as I improved I upgrade my instrument.

Good video but I think it would have been useful to have also included a more mid range flute as well, to better demonstrate how things can improve as you pay more. I'm not a flutest just a curious guitar player :D but I know from my experience with my instrument that guitars around the £500 to £1000 are extremely well made and the diminishing returns above that get steeper and steeper. The difference between a £500 guitar and a £100 guitar is far far great than the difference between a £500 and a £5000 guitar. Also the guess test proving to my ears at least that 90% of the sound is in the talent of the fingers holding the isntrument. Very good performance from the $69 flute

In the sound test, the 2nd flute definitely 'sung' more! It had more of a sweetness and clarity to it. Defs knew it was the more expensive one, notwithstanding the clunky-ness of flute no1!

I have no idea why I came across this video. During my school days, we use Yamaha. It sounds great & easy to use.
