You can see that gentle intelligence that made him such a good actor as a grown man. Cudos to Carson’s interviewing style as well. He knew how to speak to a 15 year old kid as well as discuss his work as an actor.

Everyone misses Johnny. He was the Best of Late Night TV. Leno was great too, but not as good as Johnny of course..I'll also say Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert, and Corden are AWFUL at Late Night. They're all not funny at all. The segments are terrible. The jokes are just bad. Late night just stinks today. I stopped watching after Leno left The Tonight Show in 2014.

I remember '84 pretty well. People were expected to behave a certain way when on a talk show. In fact, it always seemed like the kids were faced with a higher standard than the adults. If an adult acted goofy, he was "eccentric" and "interesting". If a kid of 15 got too silly, he'd be called immature, unequipped to handle the limelight and not yet ready to be at that level. That being said... Jason Bateman's intellect, insight and composure at that age was pretty damn amazing even for a higher standard. Johnny Carson always seemed to bring out the best in all of his guests with his sincerity and authenticity. He was the epitome of class and talent.
