I bought "Perpetual Burn" the week it was released in June 1988. It was released the same day as Marty Friedman's "Dragon's Kiss" and I bought this one too the same day. I knew the two men were friends and played in a very heavy band called Cacophony. I knew I wouldn't like Cacophony because of the vocals but this was another affair... I was immediately amazed by the performance but also the very original compositions on "Perpetual Burn". Jason was hardly 18 and already, he wasn't a clone of Yngwie Malmsteen, far from it. "Altitudes" is the first masterpiece on the album. "Air" is the second. Everybody should have this album just for those two single tracks, really. Not only the music on "Air" is absolutely beautiful but the level of playing is incredible and rarely heard in rock music. I seem to hear some JS Bach in the middle and as I've always loved classical music and Bach especially, it was heaven for me... I've always cherished this track and it's obviously a piece very close to classical music. It is great to hear it orchestrated and played on the piano. A nice change. Jason Becker has always been way more than just another great metal guitar player... His music was different right from the start. And it's really fantastic that Konstantin Kokourov found this and had it arranged this way... I just love the initial arrangement with the clean electric guitars and a bit of synthesizer but this one is interesting and gives another dimension to the track, more epic. There is certainly more music, from "Perspective" especially, Jason's second album, that would benefit from such arrangements.
@LogioTek4 жыл бұрын
Well said. 100% agree with everything including rarely mentioned and already orchestrated Perspective masterpieces. I think the difficulty for Perspective covers is perhaps there is no sheet music and transcription from that level is a daunting task. Also some stuff there isn't even playable unless you stagger the players and sync them perfectly. Those masterpieces were composed using a computer program to synthesize instrument voices and without any regard for the actual orchestra. My favorite from Perspective is Life and Death.
@mixmixture70493 жыл бұрын
Yngwie Malmsteen music is boring. Yeah he's good but if we listen his music overtimes that's absolutely boring and dizzy🙁.
@Marctull663 жыл бұрын
@@LogioTek : I only see your answer today, sorry. Thank you for the insight. Yes, i remember the liner notes in Perspective, where it's explained that the notes are sequenced and come from a computer program. We can hear it's not played by human hands, actually... I suppose that M. Kokourov could maybe do the transcription. I guess it's a difficult work. I remember that a classical musician whose name escapes me now, transcribed Deep Purple's Concerto for Group and Orchestra written by the late Jon Lord, because the score was lost, in the late 90's, it must have been a big job as well. Life and Death from Perspective is a very original piece, quite complex.

I found this album in 1989 on CD. I didnt own a CD player yet so I bought one just for that album. I had never heard anything like it. I was so blown away. A couple years later I found the tableture for Air in an issue of Guitar Player Magazine.and issue and practiced it for months until I knew every note and inflection. This orchestra version is great but The original became etched into my brain and will always be the preferred version. Same goes for The End of the Beginning from Perspectives. It was tragic and cruel what happened to jason. Out of all the ppl in the world, why Jason?
@metaloutlander2 жыл бұрын
Well said. I remember Jason and Marty put on a guitar clinic back in 88-89 so a friend and I went to see them because we were huge fans of Cacophony. I couldn't believe that maybe only 50 people showed up, people just didn't get their genius. Cacophony also played later that night and again only 75-100 people showed up. True the vocalist made it a little hard to listen to but it grew on me, great band and great show.

You set the bar too high with “ Air”, a true masterpiece, composed at a very young age. When I first listened to it back in 1988 I knew you were different. At that tender age you demonstrated to be a big bad scary monster both as a guitarist and also as a composer. You became my favorite rock guitarist from that moment on (above Marty, Gilbert, Yngwie, Vinnie Moore, Tafolla, McAlpine, etc, etc). The beauty of this masterpiece captivated me, and led me to discover more beautiful compositions of yours, from “Altitudes” to “Triumphant Heart”... and through different videos of yours I also discovered my guitar hero was also a very, very, very nice, decent and likeable human being (rare to find within rock scene), humble and shy who happened to transform into that monster when grabbing a guitar. This is indeed a beautiful version, a must have one .... but I still prefer the magic of the original. Hats off Maestro!! You set the bar too high.... too high...
