I love this one! I’m 52, and remember how valuable it was to have this skill, as a teen! I was around 13 when the bus bully was giving me a hard time, because I looked his way and our eyes met. He badgered me for a few days verbally, and then I complimented him one day and said something extremely kind. From that day forward, he was my protector on the bus and sat with me everyday. (I have highly functioning autism, so this was huge for me,as a teenager.)

I'm embarrassed to admit it but I have used this technique before on my own states LEO's. Traffic can be tough in my state and can get the best of anyone. There have been a few times when the stress became too much and I started driving a bit too aggressively which always attracts LEO attention. I have talked my way out of several tickets by playing the dumb, lost, and scared card while also destressing the officer and making them feel at ease as they have an extremely stressful job. Smiling, acknowledging and complimenting in a congruent manner (meaning not fake) just works amazing on everyday people. So many times has it not only gotten me out of trouble but gotten me into places and events that normally would be off limits to me. As a civilian I have been in so many neat places that were normally off limits by just being pleasantly happy, complimentive, and curious with a bit of "Derpy" projection thrown in.

I've always used what I call "bar insurance" if I happen to be in one. There is always a table of construction workers, either just getting off work or it's raining and work was called off. I have the waitress bring them a pitcher of beer on me. Sometimes even two or three. One is always going to come over and ask why so I tell them hard workers deserve a break every now and then and it's their day. He always tells the table and they all appreciate the gesture. I just tell them to keep on eye on me. There has been more than once some drunk tried to size me up only to have several of my new bodyguards step in. Cheap insurance.

Had a couple of software problems with the credit union and walked into the branch on Monday with the paper file, computer, keyboard, cell phone, note pad, etc. I had maybe been to the branch three times in a year. One teller recognized me on sight. A second had only heard of me and looked forward to meeting me. I met with the technician and things were resolved, and I sent an email of commendation. The bar story reminds me of an incident that happened several years ago. I was sitting at the bar of an Irish Pub, talking to a friend of mine and noticed this extremely attractive blond sitting with a guy at the back of the bar. She honestly looked a lot like a woman I went to High School with and was wondering what she was doing in the town we were in, since it was several hundred miles from where we grew up. I stared for a while trying to figure out if it was her or not, when I noticed the guy with her staring at me. I nodded and turned back to the bar and proceeded to talk to my friend. About 5 or 10 minutes later the guy passes by me like he was going to the bathroom, grabbed me jerked me out of my chair and pushed me into the bar and asked me what I was doing looking at his wife. Calmly and without missing a beat, I said " I am so sorry, But your wife is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen and I just can't keep my eyes off her." The man looked at me for a few seconds relaxed his grip, and suddenly invited me over to have a drink with him and his wife, I accepted and then explained the whole situation to both of them. We became friends after that night. My friend at the bar asked me How did I know what to say to get out of that situation, I told him, I didn't deny what I was doing, I complimented his most prized possession, and also basically showed I wasn't scared of him.

As a cold war Army MP it was always difficult to chill at on-post bars. While our motto was "Of the troops, for the troops" this did nothing to reduce the disdain many service members had for us. Eventually I found a small local ratskeller a short walk from my gasthaus where I was quartered. Even here there was a lot of resentment brewing because of the presence of nukes in country. But this place had great food and drink and importantly a DJ who played a lot of Pink Floyd, Zappa, CSNY... I wanted to keep my stammtish so when the local "agitators" would make a statement ment to intimidate I would just smile and look them in the eye and ask them to explain further. In a few short weeks I was a regular in their foosball tournaments and always had a welcome seat at a table for dinner. So sometimes it doesn't require flattery but honest inquisitiveness can do the trick. It helps to know both your friends and perceived enemies

@@michaelbeck4854 from 78 to 88 things were different. From 88 to 93 things were different again. From 94 to 2000 again different. The world doesn't change all that much for a young GI stationed on a big base. When you live among the locals one has to be a good neighbor. That stands true today. I never feared a minute stationed in Germany except when we had to close the base bar in Baumholder because young dumb GIs who weren't old enough to drink state side found they could drink at the local hole. It was my job to protect that government property. And I spent plenty of time putting on a show chasing Russian "inspectors" in BMWs while we were speeding on icy roads in 1/4 tons with no doors and no backup away from missile sites. And lucky me caught duty every 3 months transporting state side under guard GIs who thought they could live like gangsters over there with nothing but easy US prison time followed by dishonorable discharge. My favorite was breaking up drunken brawls between a soldier and their spouse in front of their children without anyone around for miles who could speak English. I'm happy that you've made it to retirement. But honestly I'm more happy that I did. And in case you missed it, the whole part of the video was to diffuse a potential hazzard. The CIA creator spoke about using "flattery." I simply made the point that honest interest, also known as caring, in the other person worked well for me.

They immediately smiled as well and I walked to talk to people casually a few steps away. I could still hear parts of their convo and it was something like "wtf happened? I have learned that distracting someone can be useful. I ask a question about the person. They start talking about themselves and then I am free to leave.

I use this when I want to get information from someone. You just start asking questions about someone's car and they tend to get offended at the invasion. If you tell them how awesome their car looks and then ask them a question, they are far more likely to be forthcoming. Even giving information unprompted.

People love "correcting" you. If you talk to someone, or ask questions, they'll give you three times as much info if you're saying/asking "wrong" info.

Not to over do the flattery! lol One Sunday morning a friend asked me to give him guitar lessons. He was useless playing the guitar and ended up smoking a huge pipe of Kentucky laughing grass. We then proceeded to make a big noise with the amplifiers turned up high. 15 minutes later there was a persistent knock on the studio door The cops arrived. One cop who insisted to come in. The small studio was a maryjane hotbox and I knew we were busted. When the cop entered he was totally focused on the music keyboard and I asked him if he can play. He said yes and we made him comfortable in front of it. He couldn't play but we were applauding him and encouraged him to play more. Then a mic was produced and we were treated to a stoned cop who loved his new found talent and friends. We made such a racket. Then a second cop was sent to come and tell the 1st cop to stfu! It was hilarious! Not a word about us embracing the rastafarian religion that Sunday!

Ironic that the mention of a "beautiful city" at 1:40 was accompanied by a view of Philadelphia's city hall. Nice architecture for sure, but anything but a "beautiful" city. An absolute crime-ridden hellhole is more accurate.

Food is also a great angle to play. Everywhere is famous for something, everybody needs to eat, and everybody has a favourite dish. Ask them what they like and where you can get some. Treat them like an authority figure on local cuisine and semi-plead for that valuable information that only locals know
