While on a short term missions trip in Venezuela 30 years ago our team of five were shopping in Caracas. I was so thankful for the "situational awareness" I had learned. Three young men kept following us from a short distance. I spoke to our host missionary. He advised going into any shop along the street for safety. Then he walked up to the guys and, speaking Spanish, told them we were aware they were following us. Almost immediately they stopped and disappeared.

Talking about dog bowls, if you're moving into a house but it's still empty, put a vase of flowers or pot plants and/or ornaments on the window sill. For the bathroom you can put a shampoo bottle, etc. When I was on my own with children I would put a well known men's aftershave and deodorant in the bathroom window. Also, men's socks on the line and bring them in and put a different few pairs up later on. I put men's shoes outside the back door. I used to get them from one of my brothers, but you can buy the shoes in a charity shop, they should look as if they're been used, maybe for gardening.

I buy and sell furniture and other items on Craigslist. Thus I'm often meeting strangers, sometimes in their homes. I send the address and phone number to my adult son, and let him know when I get there and how long I expect to be. And while I take my personal cell phone in with me, I also leave a work cell phone tucked away in my car for tracking. If someone is coming to my home I try to have the sale item out on the porch and lock the door to my house. I never let anyone use the bathroom. And I very openly take a picture of their car and send it to my son.

Someone told me that she woke up, with a man standing over her, with a knife in his hand. She calmly asked him, who hurt him. He burst into tears. He left soon after. People who are not in a position to effectively fight, need to develop other skills. I have a zapper cane, and other things. But, I can talk to people. Get them off kilter, with a random question. But, you have to be able to 'read the room'.

Being prepared: acceptable. Training in situational awareness and self-defense such that the student learns to experience reality with a paranoid hyper vigilance is far more likely to result in an overall reduction of safety. Perceiving everyone as an enemy as a means to be safe and prepared will trigger the reactions that are abominable that this "education" alleges to prepare the student for. If the "successful" student learns to look at reality as a state of perpetual impending doom, the teacher has done a disservice. If the martial arts instructor refuses "bad" students, his incompetence should disqualify him as a martial arts instructor. Not having achieved the mental discipline to genuinely observe of reality, in the present tense, as it truly is (which is the most important aspect of learning martial arts) can lead to this kind of hyper vigilant paranoia that becomes "healed" via developing a grandiose self identity that perceives everyone as a malevolent enemy determined to do you harm. Meanwhile, if you do not project these kinds of identity absurdities (that you're so proud to know how to defend against without realizing that it is your own projections that maintain the narcissistic perceptions of those projections while being consciously ignorant of the nature of projecting. A d so manifested a reality paradigm within which everyone's out to get you so you better be a "good person" so you can be taught by exuberant entrepreneurs such as this FUD perpetuator those cool karate chopping theatrics that UFC has demonstrated are perhaps the weakest part of what learning martial arts teaches. Teaching the mind to be balanced and calm such that genuine conscious observation of the present is where the strength is developed when learning martial arts. And this is precisely why a real martial arts instructor will not refuse a "bad person". But you gotta know how to BE a martial arts master. This dude... is either no such master or he is doing a really good job of presenting himself as he who can cure the vulnerability to what his state of mind, that he will pass along to his students, will tend to manifest while blaming those bad guys, most of whom are nonexistent until some schmuck with a chip on their shoulder starts projecting malevolence onto them. N while the death statistics from carjacking are not terribly high, certainly the numbers of kidnappings that end in a death is much higher. NEVER allow yourself to be taken to the second location. I have to disagree (or at least add a caveat) to something Mr. Hanson said regarding detecting lies. Many people, by nature or experience, hesitate and choose their words carefully before answering questions. As a peace officer testifying in court, the defense attorney's strategy often involves trying to attack the officer's credibility by getting him or her to say something that can then be used to mislead judge or jury. Therefore, the officer testifying must be on guard against being tricked into saying what the lawyer wants him to say. The same is true in an interview or interrogation. It's like a chess match in which the one answering the questions is looking for traps. In cases like this, thinking before you speak is not an indication of lying, it is an indication of wanting to ensure the truth is being told. It is a disservice to make it sound as if "this is the surefire way to detect a lie". It isn't. A useful tool indeed, but tools can be harmful if not used properly.

These type of shows always tell you that you need to criminal proof your house and protect yourself with the gun. My question is how does a senior with arthritis who doesn't have a gun, can't run protect themselves when they live in the country alone. My mom lives In a very isolated area and even though we check on her everyday she refuses to go into a nursing home in favor of remaining in her home alone. How can we better secure seniors who live alone in Isolated country area's ???? I feel like so many of the elderly are sittin ducks.

My great aunt lived alone in an isolated rural place. I know she had a .22" rifle and she make have had other weapons. She tried to keep two dogs of diverse ages. When the older dog reached the end of his days, he was replaced by a younger dog who pick up the "lay of the land" from the middle aged dog. She also had some geese that could be quite destructive when riled.

I grew up in a very safe country. I'd never seen a crime, been in a crime scene, was victim of a crime or knew anyone who was. Then I moved back to the UK thirty years ago. One day I was walking into the post office and saw that guy charging out of the post office wearing a military gas mask and carrying a bundle of cash. The door was so small. I waited for him to move so I could go in, and he waited for me to step aside for him to hurry out. I just stood there like an idiot while he stared at me as if he lost the will to live. Finally, I stepped aside. When I walked up to the post master, she said "oh my god you're so brave confronting the thief like that"... 😆 I felt my heart sink.. thief? What thief? It didnt strike me as odd that a grown ass man was wearing a gas mask at a post office. Lol Thank heavens most Brits don't carry guns. I would've been toast. I've never heard of situational awareness till now. I guess I still carry my naivete with me like someone fresh off the boat 😆

34:45 On that subject. I worked for the airlines and had a number of these things happen to me. Met a guy in Iceland that lived in Oslo Norway. One year later I ran into him and talked with him at the airport in Auckland New Zealand. Met a guy in Cleveland Ohio that lived there. Less than a year later I saw him in Florida at Disney World. Met a girl in North Carolina that I trained when she was a new hire with the airline. Sometime later she was a ticket counter agent in Los Angeles and was checking me in for my flight. Called the 800 number for the airline while on the road to change my flight. The girl that answered the call was another girl I had trained and she recognized my voice right away. Again in North Carolina there was a girl that also worked in the office with me and 2,000 others. On a random trip to Banff in the Canadian Rockies traveling with two other girls. Staying at a nice hotel and we all decided to go the pool area. While there I noticed they had steam room and thought I would use it. The girls came with me. Who do you think was already in the steam room by herself? We both recognized each other and talked a bit. It was little embarrassing for me being that I was already traveling with two other girls. They just looked at me and giggled because they knew I was squirming and teased me about it later. Had just finished visiting Pearl Harbor and slowly walking away when I heard a voice some distance behind me calling my name. It was a girl I knew back in the states. Back around 1974 I was a bartender at a Marriott in Cleveland Ohio. Later In the 2000's I ended up in another state working with a guy that I served at that bar. Stuff like that happens to me all the time.

If I was a criminal walking through a neighbourhood to look for a house to break into, I would go for the house with the security camera's. Those are the houses with valuable stuff inside. Poor people do not buy camera's, they simply get other junk when their stuff gets stolen.

reading body and facial language can be helpful too.. for example you can read someone is about to explode or seems anxious ans shifting can be a cue.. for whatever reason they are about to act out violently.. and creating distance from that person can prevent injury to yourself or the need to have to fight. I had a guy following me about 6 feet behind me as i was walking my bicycle to an elevator to go down to street level.. i could see him through the glass reflection.. i got a gut feeling i was in danger.. and instead of getting on the elevator i turne away and created some distance from the guy.. the guy urged me to go on the elevalor.. and i said that is ok.. and then he started to act violently, demanding that i get on the elevator and as he was doing that i continued to back away. and i put my bicyle between me and him. that guy was carrying so many things that he could have hit me with.. a stick and he had on a long jacket which he coud have stowed a knife or who knows what.. good thing i didn't get on the elevator. I also reported the event to the security for the station. I had my electric biycle and my back pack and id with me. most people would not have paid any mind to someone not wanting to get on an elevator. there are so many reasons a person may decide not to ride.. they guy had built up the aticipation of an easy mark that he was going to get in the elevator with no one else with us in the elevator.

Frankly, seven years in CIA does not seem particularly impressive with respect to knowing all about security and self-defense. If I understand a CIA officer's role correctly, there is very little "action," and it is mostly a job of recruiting sources, meeting people, and the like. This guy may offer good advice, I don't know; but it seems more like he's trading upon the mystique of the CIA and not any significant personal experience in any tactical sense. I don't mean to judge so harshly, but seven years just isn't much.

Jason, sometime ago, I read one of your books where you mentioned about gangs in the UK who were sexually abusing children. Usually, the gangs operated from kabob shops. They threatened children, that if they told their parents they would be harmed, and the same would happen if they went to the Police. For several years, when Police were informed of what was happened, to children who were being groomed, and passed around to be raped by groups of men they were not believed. In fact, thousands of children suffered for many years. What you failed to point out, is that the men involved in these brutal acts were all muslims, who would not think of doing such things to their own children. I feel it necessary to set the record straight, because you wrote in your book left the reader to believe that this is common behaviour among those of us who have UK passports, when clearly that is not the case. Why did you fail to point out that these perverts were all followers of Islam? I believe an apology would be in order. Being politically correct does not do justice to the situation.

It would take so little and help so much. So,I can see that this is a old video. In South Africa where I come from we were very aware of who were around us and were taught how to approach our vehicle before opening up and getting inside. Our doors were instantly locked. When we saw obstacles in the road we drive and stop for nothing and out our foot down. All the men in Our family were police reservists and all carried weapon. Now in my new country unfortunately nothing has changed except we are hounded for the terrorists to kill as many of us as they can not so much for stealing. On a jocular note. I am now an old lady with a metal walking stick. If I decide to use it with an armed animal where would be the best point of attack. His hand holding the gun. Never go into the white van to the secondary location, that's where they've planned, where they will feel more emboldened and safe, where no one will hear you or see you and law enforcement is far away... Better to run, right, scream fire, etc. Where maybe someone will hear you. Don't get in that vehicle. You have every right legally and morally to defend yourself, even at the cost of your attackers life. They've already chosen to disregard your life and morality.
