Once again, Jason Isbell tells the story of the struggles and agony caused by addiction without judgment. His experiences create his lyrics, and I applaud him for his brutal honesty and poetic spin on the pain and suffering that happens with addiction. The loss of self, of loved ones. HUGE, HUGE, applause for addressing the subject often ignored- domestic violence. I work in this field, and highlighting the NDV Hotline and the Substance Abuse Hotline after the credits sent chills through me. Once again, he created awareness around difficult topics no one wants to touch or discuss. He is bold and brave! Like I needed more reasons to respect him!

I just wish the video was as good as the story writing in the lyrics. The video narratively misses the mark imo. It's just guy takes pills...guy hits wife (is it even his wife or is it girlfriend)...woman has enough and leaves...its really generic compared to the song.
@TheDarkSkorpion
@TheDarkSkorpion 6 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say domestic abuse is ignored. I also wouldn't say that's what this song is about- although it's depicted in the video, the lyrics don't even hint at it. He does have a way with words, describing things in a way that even people in the situation would struggle to. Like in his song, Anxiety. Or Elephant. Or If We Were Vampires.

I’m just going to say it. I think this might be his top 3 songs yet. I’ve loved it since the album dropped and I’ve had it on repeat for months but I’m not tired of it yet. I think in a decade we will treat this album like southeastern and this song will stand the test of time I think

The first time I listened to the album (the day it came out) my initial response was that it was pretty good, but no Southeastern. I’m 62. Been rocking since my dad brought exile on main street home in June, 1972. 50+ years later I am amazed by today’s songwriters and their bands. I believe Jason is definitely one of the best along with his old band mate Patterson Hood, the Avett Brithers, The Lumineers, Hozier, The National, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtrey, Nathaniel Ratliff, Florence Welch, Jim James, Lord Huron, Marcus. Mumford to name just a few including Willie. His new album is awesome! And speaking of The Stones, while Hackney is not Exile, it’s damn good, relevant and a testament to their enduring legacy. 6 decades at the top! Yes- there is a lot of garbage in mainstream music. Whatever! There is so much great music available through modern technology that I am not bothered in the least by the garbage unless a kid rolls into the gas pump with it blaring. No worries- I just crank my tunes up, pump my gas and live and let live!
