Kirk was really fuckin upset when Jason left. Lars and James were shocked and mad, but Kirk was upset that the guy he was closest to in the band quit. Kirk is the duct tape that kept Metallica together for so long, but when Jason left, that duct tape fell off, but now, they don’t need that tape anymore. They’ve come to love each other and the music they make together.

Yeah it’s a real shame James and Lars couldn’t grow up sooner. Cost them a great bass player and probably a friendship. They’ve left some wreckage in their wake and a lot of that was due to being drunks and on dope the whole time. It’s all fun and games on camera until it’s time to pay the toll at the end. Fortunately they were able to turn that around.

Haha, Robert is the best musician in the band. He plays bass/guitar better then any of them. Lars is a mediocre drummer, even though he kept at it for 40 fucking years, compare him to Nicko from Maiden, Lars is flat as f*ck missing tempo and all kinds of sh*t, but the most important thing = He doesn't seem to have fun at all, enjoying the music he makes, thats the biggest fucking turn off there is. There are bands that enjoys themself and there are bands that do it for the money. James and Kirks guitars.....well compare their skill with the guys in Maiden....they aren't even close. Maiden still delivers quality albums now, Metallica hasn't done a good one since black album. Kill'em all is one of my favourite albums of all time, I remember when I bought the cassette in my youth. However nowadays 30 years later, Maidens music is so much more talented then theese guys.

Jason loved the fans and wasn't afraid to show it... and they clearly loved him back. I've never seen a negative comment about him from anyone who was a fan of Metallica's music. Great to see Jason included in the Hall of Fame induction; it was the one thing the band got right when it came to how they treated him.

Newsted didn't have the bass talent that Cliff or even Rob have, but he made up for it with passion and his backing vocals were great. It's so cool that these guys are still very close despite going their separate ways as musicians.

I interviewed Jason via phome in 1989 when I was a college DJ at our campus radio station at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. They were on their Damaged Justice Tour at that time. Nice guy and got our crowded studio of Metallica fans whipped up in a frenzy by saying "METAL"! Probably the most listened to campus radio show during the 1988-89 school year.
