Full story, so spoilers for The Rookie Season 3. Last chance to go back. Jackson West was given a new training officer after his first one was promoted. Thats where we meet Doug Stanton. At first, Stanton seemed great, already believed West knew what he was doing, and said just to call him partner. However, Stanton began showing his true colours, using his position as a police officer to intimidate minority groups and racially profiling them in certain cases. He never crossed the line of being blatantly racist, so it made it hard to really do anything. After certain events, Sergeant Grey came up with a plan to gain evidence to prove he was arresting minorities on racial beliefs. Unfortunately that plan turned upside down when the crew that was meant to tail West and Stanton got stuck and no one could back West up. Eventually West ended up calling Stanton out. And at the time seemed like Stanton woke up to what he was doing, but it didn't. They were called to a disturbance at this motel (I think), which was known for being dangerous for cops. That's where this scene happens. West is beaten up, near death and Stanton just watches. When Chen, Bradford and Stanton run over, West turns on Stanton's body camera, which goes back 2 minutes, catching him in the act. And things seem like they've won. Unfortunately Stanton doesn't get fired. He's moved to a new division, and demoted. He'll never train anyone or move up but still 'wears the badge'. West planned to go public, but Grey advised against as the higher ups would likely go on the defensive and Stanton would still likely not get fired. So a new plan is made where they meet with Stanton's watch commander, who shows all the officers working alongside Stanton a new 'training video'. This video is bodycam footage of where West was injured and Stanton watched. And immediately, the cops in the room turn from agreeing with Stanton to being against him. This whole group of episodes is really interesting, as it covers a racist cop, people trying to fire him, and also how even people who know what that cop is like won't do anything about it so they can get higher. Season 3 is really interesting and probably my favourite season, and most of it was inspired by West's actor, who was going through some really rough times (one of the reasons he ended up leaving the show).
