I finally got to see them live for the first time when they toured Australia in 2016. I paid for the VIP pass because I've been a huge fan since the early 2000's and Jason's playing has absolutely shaped mine. Was the closest I've ever come to 'fangirling' over meeting someone famous! Was lucky enough to have a very brief chat with him prior to show. He was genuinely flattered when I said he was one of my biggest influences alongside Vinnie and Virgil. Even today I'm still blown away by his sheer ability and his orchestrations.

It's not only his relaxed but sharp technique that makes Rullo one of the best drummers in the world; more so, it is his ability to create arrangements that support the music with breathtaking finesse. When drums are done right, they blend in with the music. This is what Rullo is a true master of.

Ever since this video was uploaded years ago at this point, I return to watch it every once in a while. Today is one of those occasions. Even after all this time watching, I'm still left with my jaw on the floor by the sheer level of finesse and skill Rullo has. Without a doubt, one of the classiest, most refined drum players out there. I'm glad SickDrummer (which primarily focuses on extreme metal drummers) gave a spot to this absolute beast.

After being introduced to Symphony X by a Colombian drummer, it was a jaw dropping marathon catch up for me decades ago. Here today as I was looking for live versions and this back seat ride with Jason Rullo is epic!!! Last week I gave this song as an assignment to a young Zambian music composer/producer. I had asked what genre he hated most and then gave him this song. His final comments in the two pager I got from him I am going to copy below... I am about to pass this version on to a young drummer so thanks Sick Drummer for leaving it up here. This inspires me to go with an old plan and start to get some drummers out to exhibit and inspire a new generation. 'This experience taught me an important lesson on a personal level: the power of mixing different genres. Before this, I used to think that Heavy Metal music was just a jumble of "tolerated noise." But now I see that there's an artistic aspect to it that I didn't notice before. If you look beyond the dark and thrilling music often associated with it, you'll find harmony and coordination. The way the music is structured creates a rollercoaster-like experience, with intense, breathtaking moments. Every genre offers opportunities for musicians to shine, and the structure and coordination in this music are some of the most mind-blowing I've ever heard.'

It's really amazing how clear the drums sound while Rullo is playing. The sound is beautiful and could easily be a fantastic solo. His timing is from another world - it's like he have a metronome in his head (or in his heart - who knows).

the 3 albums that had the most profound impact on my life were moving pictures, images and words and the divine wings of tragedy. when I heard the divine wings of tragedy, I heard stuff on the drums that was not the norm yet. Jason was incredibly innovative with the use of double bass on that album. I still enjoy symphony x a lot, but they are never gonna top the divine wings of stragedy. dream theater are never gonna top images and words and rush is never gonna top moving pictures either. these albums are legendary. Jason is a legendary drummer. he is a drumgod like peart and portnoy.

I was at this show, and I hadn't heard this song before at that time, and the instant it began I was like "Oh shit!!..." And at the place I was standing at at that moment, the kick drum was so powerful that it made my whole body shake each time he hit it! It was awesome! But yeah! Great show!
