Wow.... watching the progress on planting the magnolia! It truly shows how difficult the soil is on your property! Rock hard when it's dry and a heavy, mucky mess when it's wet. Everything you're doing with compost will make a huge difference! Well done!! I'm an experienced gardener, but I'm learning so much by watching your videos! Thank you!
@andreaa8057Ай бұрын
It’s so nice to see a couple sharing the same passion for planting and making your property beautiful! I put my yard waste right on the ground in the way back of my property to decompose. You can even dig a big hole and keep filling it up and then bury it. It will improve your soil.

Looks great Jason! As a southern gardener here in Georgia, just thought I’d throw in my 2 cents about southern Magnolias…they are lovely trees with wonderfully fragrant flowers for sure. Some people make the mistake of limping them up as they get larger to free up planting space below them. The reason this is not a good idea is because…not much can compete with the roots of the tree and also as the tree sheds those thick waxy leaves it creates a mess underneath. If you leave the natural shape and allow the branches to grow to the ground, creating a lovely graceful skirt, it hides the shedding leaves. Those leaves will make a natural mulch under the magnolia. Hope that makes sense. Magnolias are a native tree in my area and are everywhere here. Hurricane Helene is on its way to my garden right now, so I was unable to get outside in my garden today. 😂

Great video Jason the tree will be beautiful there. Please don’t waste all the old plants they will make great compost and your soil needs all the help it can get. If your compost bins are full the old plants can be put in a pile at the side until the compost bin reduces down. Home made compost is black gold 😀

The compost in the long border looks so much better than the wood chips. The wood chips look dead. The dark compost brings life somehow to the area.

I adore the lemony fragrance that fills the air when they are blooming. Jason you are gem! I have a totally different sandy soil here in Florida. We have have to enrich the soil. When I had a horse we used the the manure for the garden. If you ever run out check with your neighbors they may donate to your cause! Anyway, my whole neighbor is planted up with Little Gem Magnolias, Crepe Myrtles trees they go together so nice in the gardens and walk ways here. Those together will be so pretty in your garden.

Great placement of the magnolia - I was hoping it would get planted in the centre island! My grand mother had a magnolia grandiflora planted next to their tennis court - and it was one of my top 3 faves in her epic garden. Remember magnolias like cool roots so keep it mulched and allow the low branches to stay low. Also keep an eye on that hole it’s planted in. . It looks very clay-y and I killed a magnolia once because the roots drowned due to too much water retention. That is a beautiful specimen.

Oh my goodness Jason - that hardpan soil is killer - I completely sympathize with anyone having to deal with that problem! We have it throughout our yard (almost 2 acres) and have tried to dig in several spots to plant things, with no success - feels like we hit solid concrete less than an inch below the ‘grass’ (weeds) that grows in it! Guess we’ll have to get a couple truckloads of compost/topsoil/wood chips hauled in to ‘fix’ the problem! The Magnolia is gonna be beautiful - really looking forward to seeing your center island come together over time!

I just put a little gem magnolia in my new garden, they are not deciduous so leaf drop will be minimal. I also didn’t restake my tree, I was told by my landscaper that with the winds in my area the tree would snap, so better to leave the original stake on for a year.
