Hope it helps some by showing how to make changes with the learning process of growing. The fur babies/critters are looking good. Love and prayers to the all the family, especially Emily and her dad right now.

Water travels up the tree through the inner bark not the outer bark. You might be able to save the trees by wrapping them.
@pat642921 күн бұрын
The inner bark i think is called sap wood. Because it moves the sap up and down. The trees should be fine. Like cork trees are fine after bark is removed.

Brian - the best option for your sloping vineyard down to the edge of the chain fencing, is to construct my 1/2 diagonal raised beds. They are terracing, but not terraced (per se). They are raised beds, but not flat lander raised beds (per se). What you do is make stonework or woodwork of 3-sided square "U" raised bed walls. The open end faces upslope, and these upper ends are flat to the slope surface. Work outwards from the slope to whatever height of raised bed stonework or woodwork you want for the bedding, and you have a flat terraced 1/2 diagonal raised bed growing area. Fill in the 1/2 diagonal portion of missing soil. You just saved 1/2 of all stonework or wookwork supplies, and 1/2 of imported soil. Install such vertical and horizontal T poles and wiring for the vines, plus any other espaliering wires you desire. This is the best option for your slope.

Hi Brian. I think to myself, will choosing non-toxic trees for a hedge, return the problem of eating the bark of the new trees back to the beginning. It is known that animals do not eat plants that harm them and know how to eat a little of plants that can help them. Maybe it's better to choose bushes/trees that the cow and the sheep won't eat.

If Daisy & friends only stripped the outer bark of those trees, there's a decent chance they'll live because the phloem is located beneath the outer bark, not inside it. Check out cross-sectional diagrams of trees online that include labels for the outer bark and phloem. (Btw, the xylem is closer to the center, so you don't have to worry about that.)

Advice on how to straighten a young tree that is growing at an angle? I've read that I can't stake the trunk without weakening it and making it rely too much on the stake but I also don't want it growing sideways! lol

You brought it up just when I was going to ask about citrus in pots…how often should I feed them? Are the roots good? Can you coppice the trees and let them come back?
@johnlord833721 күн бұрын
Those citrus are root bound and need to be repotted. One sign of root bounding is that the tree produces fruit when it is really young - which is not good. All energies need to be into root growth and height and volume - not fruiting.

I need to pick up the book you suggested awhile back (Nurturing Traditions) but wondered if you ever considered doing a series on using plants/herbs for health benefits and then show recipes or ways you've used them both for human and farm animal health.
