In the comic, Bruce doesn't maintain eye contact. He shifts responsibility to his ideology and almost seems like admitting Jason is right, is getting rid of his parents mindset. In the movie, Bruce takes responsibility and explains why he won't. He levels with Jason and TRULY apologizes. He's not a crazy man who doesn't truly know right from wrong... it's a flawed parent, looking the child they failed in the eyes and apologizing. Fun fact: in batman: Noel, Bruce admits that in the grand scheme of things, Jason's death is what made being Batman a burden to Bruce, and not the fulfilling heroic act it used to be.

Id argue a lot of that is it’s not bogged down by being part of an ongoing comic. Under the hood had lot connections to recent batman stories as well as infinite crisis. Those references to those recent events whilst cool when you’re reading through Batman’s major stories, ultimately hurt the story as a standalone. There’s a lot of things they talk about that are confusing if you’re not familiar with the then recent batman stories of the era. The animated movie on the other hand cuts all that out resulting in a bunch more concise, tight story.

That's actually what happened in the comics, Bruce got colder and more brutal. Slowly escalating to the point where if he keeps going he might actually kill some poor kid who stole a guys wallet just so he can feed himself. I never picked up on the running theme of Batman regretting both taking him in and failing to save him when I first watched this oddly enough. It makes it sound like Bats didnt care Jason lived or died he just saw jason as a failure and refused to sacrifice his code for his fallen son. But I agree Bruce is likely feeling more than what he said and cares more about what is happening, the fact at least in this movie Batman was fighting alone feels like after Jason he decided to never again have a robin and as you say he might have grown bitter and fought harder. But it is logical that the incident changed nothing about his failures with Jason, and he also does not blame him for being angry and acting out.

One thing you'll observe is that Bruce assumed Jason would just be like Dick, become Robin and be a shining hero but because for all tense and purposes Bruce and Dick are privileged. Dick grew up with traveling acrobats who loved him and nurtured him, Bruce had loving parents and was a billionaire, Jason was a starving kid on the streets, Dick and Bruce live in a world of black and white, good and evil, Jason lives in a world of gray, he doesn't see his actions as bad because he thought it was necessary. And many times in comics, the writers make Jason Todd grow into a loving big brother sort, that personality some what become like Bruce but with much more emotional intelligence. Jason Todd is very much like year one Batman, filled with anger and vengeance but no principles to hold him back.

Criminals take advantage of his philosophy and use it to destroy more families. Batman lets criminals kill other families because he can't bring himself to stoop to their level. However, what I've seen as a big misconception is is that he trusts law enforcement to do there jobs. Batman himself has actively deterred the Gotham Police Department from using lethal force on serial killers such as the Joker.

I don't think I agree with the conclusion that Bruce regrets ever taking Jason in. I think it's more that his regret lies along the lines of not doing more to save Jason from his growing anger, of not being able to give him the kind of stability he needed to avoid ending up where he is now. I think that's the reason the movie ended with Jason's first day as Robin, and saying that this is the best day of his life. His time as Robin *wasn't* going to stay the best day of his life, we know where he ends up, and Bruce regrets not being able to steer him away from what he becomes because he was in a better position than anyone to affect Jason. At the time Bruce falsely thought that he'd already done what he had to in order to save Jason, because it worked for Dick. But Jason isn't Dick, and he was carrying more anger than Dick did. Maybe he could have done more to save Jason if he didn't become Robin, but Jason wasn't gonna be saved if Bruce never took him in. Bruce was his only chance of escaping this fate, and Bruce failed him.

I don't mind the fallen apprentice character. But there was a time in the comics where Jason was robin, commited like the others. He came from nothing: Poverty, homelessness and orphaned. Then Bruce Wayne gave him a paradise. Jason could've ignored the suffering of those less fortune. But instead he choose to risk everything he held so dear to save rich and poor alike from villiany and madness. Ultimately putting his life on the line to save a criminal relative who had only brought him pain. Damien Wayne may have Bruce's blood like Tim Drake had Bruce's mind. But Jason's had his heart. He was passionate. Both for justice and for his studies. You see he did not want to lose his second chance at a good life. But Jason also reflected Bruce in his temperament. When someone hurt a woman Jason would react in much the same way as Bruce with Joe Chill. I want to see more of this era of Jason the Second Robin.

I think the choice was still made, but just not on Jason’s terms. Remember how after Batman finally defeated him to then realize there was bomb about to go off, he had two choices right then and there. Either save Joker, who had no ability to escape of his own accord, or Jason, who can leave despite the fatigue and injuries. He chose Jason in that moment, and while he is missing and Joker somehow survived it does show that despite the “mistake” that he, Joker, and Ghul made he was willing to pick him in the end. Whether Jason will recognize it or not I can’t be certain but Batman didn’t lose, nor did Jason.

@@Artryom If we are talking about the comics i have to disagree, in Jason's original robin days he wasn't brash or hot-headed and his real disobedient behaviour only really came in when women were being harmed (e.g i believe, the diplomats son). Something that batman isn't innocent off either. Alot of the "he was always a criminal" and violent aspects came after his death and was mostly adults blaming a kid for his own murder. A death that was arguably not his fault as his birth mother lied to him, told him that the joker was gone then handed him over to the joker with a gun pointed at his head after he tried to help her. Even before Robin, he risked his life to save batman's life and only stole bat's tyres to survive as his dad had died in prison and his adopted mum had due to a disease. Plus in one-shots exploring if the robins weren't robin in the first place jason was a priest and even an f1 driver.

i loved this essay- i don’t see people dissecting their relationship like this (outside of tumblr) often, thanks you for making this. i think a big part of their problems is that while they love and miss each other so much as father and son, they don’t- and almost actively refuse to- understand each other's ways of showing that love and that’s supported by, as you said, their unwillingness to compromise and step into each other’s shoes. in fact, their separate ways of showing love are so opposite, that they're read as acts of violence by the other. i wrote a meta on tumblr about this a couple months ago but this video essay has really inspired me to maybe flesh that out and make a video essay too. great job!!🎉

One of the great joys of this film is the battle between Red Hood and Black Mask. Black Mask is presented as a psychopath with a hair-trigger temper, prone to impulsive bursts of rage. And that’s how he likes it, making sure that the “new guy” is instantly intimidated by him. What makes the contest great is that while Batman takes on criminals mostly through surveillance, investigation and, where necessary, interrogation, Red Hood confronts by deliberately challenging the boss. He is actively working to antagonise a villain whose whole schtick is is bad temper. And his “poke the bear” approach is delightfully vicarious for the audience. We would never dare to get on the bad side of a man like Black Mask, but Red Hood willingly courts his fury. This produces two good moments: the first when Black Mask tries to set a trap and says,”when I say a party, I mean a whole mess of people ready to kill him.”, the other when he’s in his office and suddenly realises there’s a red dot on his forehead, then runs from the room. It’s all fun to watch as he is driven absolutely nuts by the whole experience.

I would love to see a red hood vs rumor film. Jason has shown that he won't kill every super villian unless it's a villian as bad as the joker (which most Batman villains aren't as a lot of them are redeemable, some of them very easily so if Arkham had better therapists and was better in general) or there is a hostage (as he would rather not risk it). Where as Mario (the dude seriously needs a last name) has shown to want to kill every super villian in Gotham because of the joker even those that have been redeemed before (something I'm surprised Batman didn't point out but oh well.), I could see rumor being the line that red hood won't cross similar to how the red hood is the line Batman won't cross. (Maybe Jason could call Mario out on well a lot of things like stealing from his boss just to get on his nerves.).

By him sending Freeze with fake money dishonoring thier deal to kill him it gives Jason a better understanding of what type of psycho he's dealing with. And it gives Jason the opportunity to give the stolen Kryptonite to Batman and Nightwing furthering the point of the "don't sell to kids scene" showing that while Jason is an antagonist he clearly not evil and does the right thing (in his own twisted way) The Deathstroke scene was to explain how Black Mask got in contact with high end assassins to send after Hood dealt with Freeze and his hit men he initially sent out. The Jason vs Captain Nazi, Hyena, and Vertigo scene were a follow-up to prior events and pretty just the fearsome hand of four fight from the movie. Do you think the fearsome hand of four fight was unnecessary in the movie???? I'm biased since I'm a weirdo who prefers the comic but there aren't many scenes I'd cut from it barring the batarang to the neck scene and the Chemo and Bludhaven scene.

The problem is that Jason and Batman are both wrong and both right. Joker needs to die, but neither Batman nor Red Hood should be the ones to carry out that sentence. Batman (and Bruce) should allow the justice system to execute Joker, for the sake of the safety of every halfway decent man, woman, and child. (In some continuities, I believe he is actively intervening in the legal system to ensure his criminals are found insane and sent to Arkham rather than executed.) Batman needs to let go of his obsession with saving everyone and allow the society around him to find a solution that ends the killing. At the same time, Jason needs to stop trying to make everything about himself. Batman's code against killing is not a reflection of his love or lack thereof of Jason. It is a moral system that he adopts to prevent himself from becoming an evil person. It's flawed, but those flaws don't prevent Bruce from caring for Jason. The proof of his love for Jason is the fact he took him in at all and tried to personally help him find a path toward goodness. Jason needs to recognize that and stop trying to define their relationship in terms of killing Joker or not. Whether Joker lives or dies has _nothing_ to do with their relationship; their relationship stands on falls on the merits of the interactions _they_ have, not some third party or Bruce's moral worldview, no matter how flawed it is. Throughout this entire story, he is not trying to improve on Batman's mistakes; he's just trying to get personal vengeance, rather than justice, whether it comes from himself or from Batman. He'd _rather_ it come from Batman because that would validate his hatred and (in his mind) restore their relationship, but the reality is that would do neither. Given all this, I think Batman is _closer_ to the moral high ground in the conflict, and we see clearly where Jason's path leads: more violence, more death, more chaos, escalating into an all out crime war in the city. No matter how powerful Jason is, there will always be someone willing to compete with him. He won't make things better, and unlike Batman who is at least breeding a new generation of heroes and honest citizens, he will only breed sociopaths willing to kill to get what they want.

In Jason's defense: if I was a Gotham resident and I knew Batman and the police kept letting the Joker live, after he killed my loved one and thousands of other people's loved ones, I would become a supervillain. Or at least start a political movement to pressure the governor to post a "Shoot On Site" order for the Joker. Is such an order constitutional? I would let the Supreme Court determine that AFTER the Joker has been shot, multiple times, with a couple straight to the head. With all the cops the Rogues have killed, how they get taken in alive is an absolute miracle, in the real world. I grew up in LA, and most times, cop killers are not taken in alive or at least not without extra holes in them. Guy in a purple suit and white makeup seems like an easy enough target.

I'm honestly shocked that there haven't been any stories about disillusioned Gotham residents just buying guns and outright killing Joker after he's killed their friends and families each time he's escaped from Arkham. I really think that a story about the average citizens of Gotham banding together and putting an end to the Joker would make for an excellent story, especially if it ends with Batman being forced to face the reality that the people he thinks he's protecting are only being hurt and/or killed because of his unwillingness to kill just one deranged serial killer.

Jason Todd; red hood was one of Batman’s greatest failures coming back to haunt him. Nowadays he’s just sorta Batman’s shadow the hedgehog with crobar trauma.

No matter who much i love the film. I cant help but it missed several details the comic and the og death in the family comic have. That being details like Shelia, Jason plots for mask and joker being separate things, amd several small details in his actions like showing how much research he puts into those he decides to kill or when he baits batman into discovering or dealing with Masks plots for him. Like leading Bruce and Dick to where Amazonia stored (rather than trying to steal it himself) and conveniently letting the kryptonite fall into Batmans possession after he steals it. They are important details that established more of his morals and motive that the film leaves out to sway the viewer to Batman side. Likewise Sheia is missing so DC can fuel its 'Jason was hot headed and impulse' narrative, rather than the real death that included his mother luring him into a trap. Its stuff that really doent do the film favors when adapting Jasons character

In the comics, that monologue about Batman letting Joker live hits harder if you actually have A Death in the Family fresh in your memory, because you know something that Jason doesn't, and that Bruce at that point probably doesn't want to admit: that Bruce _was_ ready to kill the Joker or otherwise end things permanently after Jason Todd died. That he was so wrought with grief that he was willing to throw away his no-kill ideology for the sake of avenging his son. He _was_ willing to allow himself to go down into that place, even knowing that he may never come back, and it took _Superman_ stepping in to stay his hand. It's also hilarious when you consider the specific circumstances behind _why_ Superman stepped in: it's because the Joker had just been appointed Iran's ambassador to the United Nations and thus had diplomatic immunity, and the big blue boy scout stepped in on behalf of Uncle Sam to make sure Bruce didn't cause an international incident. Comics are weird.

The lack of anyone killing the joker is actually what has turned me away from Comics in general. Joker doesnt survive because he's smart or strong like Darkseid. He survives by status quo. His very existence makes the DC universe an unrealistic nonsensical mess. So when Ras al gul feels slighted by the clown he... ignores him? The league of assassin's leader needed a fucking clown to distract Batman? Not his... legion of dutiful servants? Then he just lets joker live? Why? Its pretty much the whole reason most villains don't stay in jail too. Realistically joker wouldn't be escaping Arkham nearly as much as he does as every crime boss in Gotham would want him to stay locked away for good and basically be investing in Arkham security as a result. Batman also probably would have given Arkham state of the art security equipment as Bruce Wayne to help Arkham keep Batman's villains locked up and rehabilitated as well

And, honestly, if people like the Joker pulled the stunts they did I wouldn't be shocked if, in the DC universe, the death penalty would've stayed on the table due to public demand for example. Comics have the issue of wanting to preserve "our" status quo to keep it "more relatable", but the truth is that even super villains on the lower end of the power-spectrum doing crime would fundamentally shift the power-dynamics of the world, which in turn would have fitting consequences.

This entire thing feels like pure bias than sense we all should see or agree with… which makes it stupid. The biggest takeaway I get from the story is that they're both wrong because they're both right. The morality of reality is rarely if ever black and white, it always seems to be disturbingly grey. It's very easy to convince ourselves that we know better than others, that what we believe is right and what is wrong is fact. Inevitably though, no matter what we do, it always ends up backfiring somehow. Nobody is perfect. Nobody. Our perspectives on right and wrong can't be perfect either. If it could, we as the civilization of mankind would have had things all figured out without controversy a long time ago.

I think the true message of batman's story in general is kind of like the saying " the blind can't lead the blind". Batman is a severely traumatized man, so traumatized in fact that he has dissociated from his original identity and fully sees himself as Batman, Bruce Wayne is simply the act he puts on for people in his daily life but the guy beating people up in alleys is the real him. He then takes on children and raises them to be basically child soldiers and gives them the only tools he knows how to deal with trauma which is learning how to fight and think in a very cold and calculated way, then makes them join him in his futile fight against crime. Bruce never once thinks "hey I should probably get these kids therapy" no just puts them in very dangerous situations and have them fight deadly villains because that's obviously the healthiest things for kids to be doing. That's why I think it's weird when people act like Jason is the wrong one for not understanding Batman as if Batman philosophy ever made sense to begin with.
