I strived for an easy way to calculate rise and run on my deck stairs but this explanation can be used for any type of stair stringer. I tell you how to figure out your total number of stairs, calculate run, calculate rise and how to mark them out on a template to save on errors you may make (Lumber is expensive). Don't be confused when calculating Rise and Run for Stairs. It's easier than you think. Templating your Rise and Run makes it easy and can save you money. The overall height of your stair stringer is key in the calculation. The goal is to have a rise of about 7 inches so the general concept is to take the total height and divide it by 7 to come up with the total number of stairs you'll need. That will get you close to figuring out the rise. To get more exact you'll need to divide the total height again by your number of stairs. Adjustments must be made for the height of your treads. The most important thing to do is create a template first.

Terrible explanation. How does any of the math work if you dont even know how far out your stairs are going to go. The angle of the stairs. You are either missing something or skipping over the hardest part.

Hey I'm sorry you found my explanation terrible. I understand your frustration because it took me a long time for it to click. I suggest you get some cardboard and work it out. On these bottom stairs my overall additive run and where it landed was not that important. You may notice that I also poured some additional concrete for where it landed. Local code made a dictate how long your run needs to be but there's also a range. If your distance out is very important in your project, I suggest measuring that distance. You may have to use a plumb line hanging off of your landing to determine your overall additive run. Now divide that by your run of 10.5 in" (or somewhere in the range of code) and that will help you determine how many stairs that you have. It may still be very helpful to use cardboard for you go to cutting of your expensive piece of wood. This technique will allow you to adjust your own per stair run for it to work out. Good luck. I'm not an expert at this but thought I could be helpful and thought my video could be helpful. I apologize if you found it frustrating.
