I think the era of buying cheap old trucks is slowly coming to an end. You used to be able to buy old trucks pretty cheap, but new trucks are so expensive, that sellers wised up, and they want a crap load of money for their old trucks now. The good thing is, that they are still way cheaper than a new truck, but they are not cheap like they used to be.

I thankfully bought mine for 1k, didnt run but didn't have any rust at all because they parked it inside their famly barn He said other people wanted to buy it just to part it to other trucks , so thankfully i saved mine, took the whole engine out and cleaned it up with new gaskets and a new carb, works flawlessly now and love it

I remember as a kid in the late 2000s-early 2010s and was looking forward to being in high school and buying an older truck because I’ve always loved most trucks made between the 1970s-2000s but when I could actually get a job was around when the prices skyrocketed. Wish I coulda been of high school age before cash for clunkers man.

Despite owning a 2021 Colorado ZR2, nothing compares to my 1969 C10. Absolutely love the long bed for work projects and can haul what I need it to. Mostly original with the old tired 350 in my shop to be rebuilt, but have a new factory crate drop in 350 running with the old original 3 speed. With so many guys cutting the beds down, I’m leaving mine stock, I actually use and like the long bed. In Florida, I use the old truck a lot during the non hurricane time lol…. I don’t drive it in the summer much due to the heat and rain, but fall and spring…. Driving it all the time. Can’t beat an old truck, nothing compares to it…

I dont have a US truck, but I do have a Mitsubishi L200 from 1987 and it shares the same benefits, easy to work on, down to basics without computer, beeping and stuff, hell i even removed the powersteerimg pump cus it was leaking and replacing the seals didnt fix it, doesnt matter, its a joy to drive. Biggest difference is that mine has i think its called extended cab? So i have some room in the cab behind the seats, at the cost of slightly shorter bed. Still longer bed than (most) modern trucks, atleast of comparible size truck. I love it!

But i will say the best generation to own, use for work, and daily drive is the late 90s, early 2000s from any make ford, dodge, gm. I can get behind what you are saying to a point. Problem is people that buy these old trucks, and slam them to the ground and do an LS conversion on an old truck. I’m not saying it is wrong or they should not do it, as it’s their truck to do with as they please. But when you do all that to an old truck, you are taking any usefulness of having an old work truck out of the reason to have an old work truck. And that’s to prevent having to use and abuse your brand new $80,000 truck sitting in your drive way. But my hats off to those guy’s who buy them and restore them, as they deserve to be kept around.

The cab on my Ford was swapped with a 74 cab so it just has lap belts which I prefer, it doesn’t ding about anything- lights left on, no seat belt, left the key in it, it doesn’t care- very easy to work on, and best of all a manual transmission. If it didn’t get 6 mpg, I’d drive it everyday.

Being a Mopar fan, and having owned a 1981 PU, yours is one good looking truck. Woman are responsible for all those electronics. Hubby wants to buy a new truck. But the misses wants it to be easy like a car. For me I'll take the shifter for 4x4 and get out and lock the hubs every time. Simple reliable just what I want. Besides all you find on the lots these days are loaded up four doors and a sand box. To me if four doors are more important than a truck you can actually haul things in then dammit just buy a n SUV. There was a time when everyone wanted an eight foot bed. Not these days.

There was a solidness about it. I have a '65 F100 now. Turned it into a portable welding rig too. It is a 2WD, I put a 8,000 electric winch on the front bumper. It is good truck...only half a truck compared the the Power Wagon. I am running the 300 cubic inch six. That is one bad engine. This F100 has been my pal since 12/23/82. The 318 in it doesn’t have a lot of power. However it’s been incredibly reliable over the years. If it wasn’t for my business and its needs for heavy duty modern truck demands. It would be my absolute go to. Perfect for home owner diy projects and small acreage properties. Cheap to purchase, cheap insurance, cheap to maintain.

Fuel pump went out on me yesterday took my 5 minutes and 10 more from someone stopping to talk about the truck and the charger I picked up. Not many people are going to do that about a new truck off the lot.

I love your messaging! I believe you are spot on. I owned a 79 bronco and a 81 f150 and they are totally useful and easy to keep on the road. Btw when you pulled into that chevron station you should of gave that square body some props!

Thats a sweet truck. Ya, i agree old trucks are much better than new ones. Cheaper to repair and maintain as well. God i hate the dinging bells on new vehicles!

I did the same thing, I picked up an old truck for sale on FB marketplace. I bought a 1988 Ford F250 extended cab long bed with the 7.3 IDI diesel. I use mine for home stuff and as a backup vehicle. I paid 1500.00 bucks for it 4 years ago and had to do a little work to it as well. Like yours, mine isn't for sale.

I bought an 84 model Ram short wheel base a while back for 800 bucks. I had to replace a starter solenoid and window regulator to get it up to daily driving. I get asked if it is for sale at least once every time 8 dr8ve it 😆

I have a '78 D200 single cab long-bed. Bought it for $1400. Runs great, feels like a piece of my childhood and so dang useful for actually hauling stuff. You have my condolences paying for Chevron gas in Washington state though 😆

I own and drive exclusively old trucks. Like you said, I pay dimes to dollars for them because, well, they're clapped. Then I put a couple hundred dollars and man hours in and drive them. Better than 70k

I still have my 2000 Dodge 2500 4x4 SPORT (ext cab short bed, Gen 2 Cummins). It’s not quite as old as probably some people are considering (but these are basically just good ole trucks). I nearly traded it in about 3 different times on my newer replacements always Dodge RAM or JEEPs There is no place or time, I still won’t jump in it and go. I have had it so long now, that friends & family still ask if “the Goat” is still around and running? It’s become an icon (or extension of me) that reaches from right before college till now, so there are so many memories & even pics of it @ high school graduation, my dogs in it, out at the farm working it hauling hay, at the lake, building stuff, and yeah even me passed out “asleep” 😂😂😖 in the bed… out in the middle of no where bonfires. Yep, newer trucks are great, but yep they ding, lock you in, have all sorts of issues with the technology glitches… 😰🤮. I have a newish Power Wagon it’s great but I’m just as likely (as with all the prior replacements) to go jump in “the goat” & roll. I just did it unexpectedly at Thanksgiving… I guess everyone will see my newest truck at Christmas or next year… It still looks good, runs good, gets excellent fuel mileage for a big ole diesel (about 17 average). It’s still mostly stock, (different exhaust, turbo, tune, but no lift kit, no huge wheels, & at this point… that’s probably what makes it stand out because it’s not all modified & crazy looking. Plus, I have gave it a very good life. It still has its original paint & even the cool 4corners Dodge/Jeep, Farmington, NM. dealer emblem on the tailgate. I plan on “the now old goat” being around for a long time to come. 👍😖

Got a 95 k1500 5.7 tbi small blo k chevy v8. These trucks are one of the most reliable trucks ever made. And probably is chevys best overall trucks they've made. Far as reliability is concerned. And i got it for free when a friend of mine died. His brother's were going to junk it. All it needed was a u joint, and a set of tires. Honestly it's shame people have no idea just how good some of these old trucks were. The 5.4 2 valve f150, the 305 or 5.7 350 from chevy. The dodge Cummings diesels. The old 4.6 tundra, the 5.3 ls v8 based chevy. The old toyota pickup with the 22r. There's alot of good old trucks still running strong and well looking care on the road. And these trucks are just a few to consider picking up.

My wife has a 2021 Toyota Highlander with bells and whistle’s and I hate it. I just bought a 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ. It runs, drives, has basically no options other than a heater and a glitching stereo system and I love it. Easy to work on, and more metal than modern vehicles out there. No air bags either. Same thing with the seat belt. It does not chime when I take it off. And with the wrangler I can take the doors and top off and it’s fine.

The main issue with vehicles 15 years and older is finding parts. It was a guy that couldn’t find a valve cover gasket for 86 Chevy Cavalier so he had to get rid of the car.

Very cool old truck, I wouldn’t mind having one myself. If I ever have the room on my property, I’d go your route and “restore” an old one. As for the yard, I consider it a chore, I do it because I have to, but I want to be done as soon as possible. Thanks Jason for you do.

I love my old trucks. Back in February I bought back a 96 Chevy Silverado that I sold to a friend 12 years ago. It was in really bad shape from neglect, but after a ton of work and money it's back on the road. Although I did spend a fair amount on it, it was still tens of thousands less than buying a new truck. As a hint for your Toyotas, if you really want to hear less dinging from them, get a higher end scan tool, like Xtool, so you can turn those features off.

Am out in SE Idaho. Recently picked up a 1980 K20 for $1800. There are still good deals out there on old trucks, especially if you can make a drive to an agricultural area. This was an old farm truck which also has bad brakes and needs a lot of TLC, but an old truck of most any sort is an investment. Yes, as folks find out about a new investment opportunity, the cost to get into the investment will go up. But that doesn't change that these vehicles are a good investment due to the utility offered when properly maintained. Bonus points for the manual transmissions being a theft deterrent in an era where folks can't even make it a whole day without smart phones. XD
