It’s such a charming truck. I once also had a classic project truck. 1988 Suzuki samurai i drove 10 hrs to get. I had a lot in mind I wanted to do, including also a EFI retrofit. But it just sat there for 2 years 😢 I ended up selling it. So props for all the love you gave the old dodge!

I absolutely love these trucks, I’ve probably had 15 of them by now 72-93’s and currently in my fleet is a 1991 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 and the 2nd is 1990 D-250 club cab 360 auto! Man I love these trucks. The gassers are amazing too. I’ve spent more miles sitting behind the wheel of one of these dodges than anything else. Amazing trucks and so underrated. But hey that keeps them cheaper for guys like me!!

7:32 The hood ornaments were only optional for lower entry work/basic trucks. If you got any packages or anything, it would automatically bump it up to where the ornament came standard. Your truck with the carpet, chrome trim, and two-tone would have come standard with it. In 1991 for the front end refresh, the hood ornament was dropped completely, but enough people complained about it missing that most dealerships added them back on.

My '82 "Custom" with only gauges and power steering for options is missing the Ram that it once had. An '88 higher trim D150 I had still had it. They were or maybe still are, a popular theft item for a dark cult. I should have bought a used one a few years back before the price went crazy for them.

19:12 I have the Edlebrock Pro Flow 4 on my 89 W150's 318 LA. I had to ditch the factory EFI because previous owners had removed various parts and sensors of the emission control. The factory EFI in mine would barely run, even on a good warm day. The Edlebrock system runs like a dream. It cranks any time of the year on the first try. It was easy to tune, and even comes with a tablet to use or a Bluetooth Android/iPhone app. Either way you go, aftermarket EFI will make your old girl run like a dream.

I drove a 1988 plain Jane D150 for several years and it never failed me. I just bought a 1985 Short Bed, standard cab with 60,000 miles and I'm the third owner. I was very happy to find your videos. I was happy you said how long it took you to replace the front suspension. I wondered about that when I watched that video. I'm looking forward to seeing more on your Dodge.

I just got a 1990 D150 with the 3.9 in it. Traded my neighbor a fuel transfer tank and pump for it. Moat of the paints flaked off, its missing a few small things, and I love it. Its my daily driver. Its slow and rusty, and my neigbors love it too. I live in a rural farming community and it fits right in. Thanks for the Old Dodge videos.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I own a 1998 Ram 1500 with a 3.9 V6 and a 5-speed [235K miles], and a 1973 D600 with a 14' flatbed, the industrial 318 V8 and a 4-speed with a split-axle [40K original miles].The D600 is in amazing condition. I'm currently in the middle of having the gearing changed in the differential so it will do highway speed. Once that is finished I will build a custom camper on the flatbed. I really appreciate these videos about your '89 because the old Dodge trucks are all similar in many ways. Some things changed over the years but many things remaimed the same. Besides that, it makes me happy to see somebody else loves an old Dodge as much as I love mine!

Howdy neighbor to the south! I'm just north of the 49th in BC Canada. Love your old truck. I'm still in the process of fixing up my own little '88 V6 Ram. Yes, I'm keeping the TBI V6 because it's cool, it annoys the hell out of people who want me to V8 the truck; and it's supposedly the most unreliable engine in the world. And yet, it's been nothing but happy-go-lucky for me. It's the best runner of my fleet. Must've been all that time I spent making Turbo FWD mopars run & drive good. I've still yet to repaint mine, and maybe do the front end just like you did. Since I'm the AMC Guy, the truck is also an AMC.... meaning it's the Anemic Muscle Truck. It's bright red, it's a short box, it's got slot mags..... and it's a six. Bwahahahaha. We've also affectionately dubbed it The "General Delivery". It's Slow, not many people knew about it and it's entirely obsolete.

I had an '87 Dodge D150, in 1995. It was a black short bed with a 318 auto. In 1996, I sold it and bought a '92 W150 from my father in law. It's still my daily driver. It's a red & silver 2 tone. It's got the 318 magnum with multiport fuel injection and an automatic transmission. My 4 kids grew up riding in it. It's part of the family, at this point. Every month or two, another guy knocks on my door, asking to buy it. They all leave disappointed. I'll never sell it. The paint is looking pretty rough. I've nicknamed it, "Ol' Rusty", because of the "patina". The plan is to restore it, some day. Maybe when all the kids haved moved out. I'm in a couple of Facebook groups for owners of the '72-'93 Dodges, and the D/W series trucks. I saw a pic of a great idea for the radio. A guy moved his heat & A/C controls, and 4WD indicator to the radio spot. Then he put a big, modern radio with GPS where the heat & A/C controls and message center had been. If yours is like the '87 I had, there's a little storage cubby where my '92 has the message center. His install looked really clean and nice. I saved a pic. I wish I could post it here. I've watched a few of your videos. Thanks for posting them.

Hi Jason, fantastic videos. I have a 92 d150 LE with the 5.2 Magnum in the red and white, like yours, although the white is a little thinner in the middle for 92. Bought the truck while vacationing in New Hampshire during fall foilage in 1999. I drove it back to Bellingham by myself in some pretty crappy weather and just fell in love with it. Seemingly endless power and the 3 speed overdrive purred down the freeway at 85 mph. I bought it with 67,000 miles and today it only has 121,000 miles. Never my daily driver but when it was used i drove it hard. So I put a camper on it and used it as a ski bum vehicle for several years. Eventually, tearing up the mountain with a camper loaded with gear, beer and usually a couple of people taxed the poor 727. Finally going up stevens pass one fine morning it blew out the rear end. The shop rebuilt the 727 with a heavy duty kit and i replaced the rear end with a Ford 8.8 from an Explorer. It also got new springs and the front end was done too. No more clunk. Thankfully i know 3 very good home mechanics that are less than half the price of shops. The transmission rebuild however wasn't cheap though, like you, i wasn't parting with my ram. One of the cons of these square bodies has always been the overweight, tankish front end. So i started obsessing with ways to lighten it up. By adding aluminum heads, radiator and lightweight headers i was able to shed about 100 pounds. I relocated the battery to the back and saved an additional 70. It certainly doesn't wallow around as much so I'm pleased with the results. A fiberglass hood could be in the future. IDK. Unfortunately the stock fuel injection system could not learn the new found power from the ported heads so the Holley Sniper went on. I completely recommend this for your 87. With the high flow heads, headers, intake and sniper the truck is able to get just over 20 mpg on the highway. The stock 5.2 magnum was no slouch at close to 19 mpg highway. These numbers are with no load and hyper modest driving but its impressive nonetheless. Happy trails and i look forward to your next dodge video. .

Always good to see the D150. Would love to see more. Very nice example and I can see why you like it. I likely watched all the videos that you did on this truck. I have a beat looking '82 D150, slant 6, 2-barrel, manual, with about 182 k on it. Had it for 6 years. Also had a nice '88 D150 auto, years ago, with 318 and throttle body injection. Despite parts problems, there's something about these '72 to '93 Dodge trucks. I'm a little surprised that you haven't mentioned wiring problems. I've had my share of them on both trucks, but it goes with the territory.

Beautiful truck my man! I love these 1st gen Rams and Ramchargers. Yours is somewhat rare being a D150 with the 360 5.9. Not super rare but way more rare than the 318. The majority of these had the 318 and more than i realized even had the slant 6. Not as many people checked the box for the 5.9. Ive been around a lot of these trucks growing up. My uncle had a '77 D100 318 auto that was fuckin SWEET but here in stupid Cali, all vehicles 1976 model year and newer have to pass biannual smog and that truck was getting harder and harder to pass because it had bad valve guides and would burn oil on startup. I begged him to sell it to me (i was 16 at the time and had plans to drop a 440 out of an RV into it and a posi rear end but he sadly sold it to the state as a gross polluter and they crushed it. It was really a shame, being a Cali truck it had ZERO rust, frame or body, and was an engine and a trans rebuild away from being a great driver. My mom had an '86 RamCharger Royal SE, fully loaded, 360, auto, 4x4, factory roll bar and every power option, and cruise control. She held onto that thing after buying it new until about 2016 when she had to sell it for financial reasons...i really miss that truck as well. I wish i had both of them... Glad to see you cherish this rig and have left it mostly original. I love Cummins swaps as much as the next guy but so many of these have been modified with the diesel that i bet one day these gassers will be the rare ones lol 😂. Great vid.

Just found your channel and this video set. My first new vehicle (I saved up for years and ordered it new) was a 1990 W250 LE with the 5.9l gas engine. Club cab long bed. I loved it and still miss it, but living near chicago in the rust belt and no way to garage it I could not keep the rust monster at bay. It had the TBI fuel injection, which was OK but not great, and the A518 overdrive transmission, which was awesome for taking a truck with 4.10 gears on the freeway. I had to replace the injectors in the throttle body but I suspect that was due to the awful epa mandated winter 'attainment area' fuel we are forced to use in chicagoland. The truck would get 11-12 mpg unless I bought gas in the collar counties around chicago, or c(r)ook county, in which case it got 6-7mpg. Absolute crap gas. Get gas from outside or drive up to Wisconsin and mileage went back to 11-12mpg and it ran better. The worst design decision was that they put the voltage regulator function into the SBEC engine computer; that one feature failed and I had to replace the SBEC for it and it took Dodge three tries to find a 'remanufactured' SBEC that worked, then another couple of weeks to get a backordered new one. Truck ran fine, I just carried a charger and an extra battery for a few weeks. I let it go in 2002 and still regret it. HOA clamped down on driveway repairs and maintenance; you open the hood and a karen would be snarking at you even if you were just checking oil or adding washer fluid. Couldn't afford to pay for fixes at the time, and couldn't do them myself and the truck was too long to fit in the garage.

Lame about the HOA. I have the same issue with the truck not fitting in the garage. I usually pull it into the garage but leave the end outside. When I rebuilt the front suspension it was on jack stands in my driveway for a long time. :-)

Hello think we’ve asked about this before but. Reference Our sons gen 1 ram could you recommend a borgoson lower steering column replacement it’s really hard over here in England to get any information let alone trying to find a part to buy. On rock autos you can buy loads of replacement bits and bobs for the steering but do you think this upgrade is worth the time and effort thanks in advance Roy.

The issue with these? Chrysler ran these with minimal upgrades or changes from 1972-1993. They were not competitive in the marketplace during their time. As far as "Longevity," I'm from Washington State and the part where you say "Look underneath," my '76 Valiant looks just as clean. Same with my '69 Swinger and '76 Travco...if you were in the "Rust belt," I promise you it would be rotted out like the others

I have a question for you, have you come across any full dash removal videos? I have a 93 D150 v6 but the mice must have chewed some wires. I replaced my radiator with the all aluminum one also, but had to ream the mounting hold wider by 1/32 on meach side. But when I went to start it after replacing the radiator, it would crank but there was no fire to the coil. I have replaced about all the electrical components under the hood except some of the relays. before that. and test drove it before parking it to wait on the radiator.

@@JasonExplainsThings Well, I gues I'll just start taking the dash out soon, as I did find a mouses home, nest whatever it is right on top of the wires where they go through the firewall. I can't get in there to see it, so out it comes.

DO NOT GO EFI terrible idea the are plagued with reliability problems (see dead dodge garage for more info). Go with a brand new edelbrock 4 barrel and dont look back. I would also swap in a bigger cam and change the valve stem seals while you are at it. I have a 90 d250 with tbi and its good and all but it leaves me with no options to go with more power outside of gutting the computer and doing aton of work. If it was a 89 i wouldn't have as many problems going to a carb but just stick with it. Limited slip is amazing i have it and i love it its worth every penny.

@@JasonExplainsThings from what I heard efi systems are amazing when working and tuned right but sensors like to die and components get to hot or too wet and just don't live very long. If you are going to drive it once in a blue moon it won't be a big deal but if you drive it a lot stick with a carb. I'm rebuilding a slant 6 for my 80 w159 short bed and reliability is a huge factor I don't want to have to touch anything on it for a long time. I would pull the engine find a nos cam and lifter set and go ham

If you wanted a cheaper alternative to a limited slip you could get a locker i put one in my d100 with an 8 1/4 they are only around 300 bucks, also as far as an efi system would go, if you wanted the best and the easiest method swap in a motor from a 2nd gen ram a 318 or 360 Magnum engine they are more reliable engines they are designed better they make waaay more horsepower and they are multiport injection i put a 318 magnum in my d100 and its bolts right in its just the wiring that can get you to scratch your head but there are plenty of videos snd forums of people doing it

Yes, after 100,000 it resets in these trucks. The way to know how many miles after that is to have a documented ownership history and maintenance records.

I am down to assist you with anything to do with this truck for the limited slip rear just find an entire diff that will work. That’s the easiest way setting up a gear set properly is not something an unskilled person should attempt. I’m all for DIY projects, but people become mechanics and charge what they do for a reason lol yes I’m a certified mechanic don’t get me wrong. You have my support, but there’s a reason people go to a mechanic sometimesagain not trying to rain on your parade. I love the truck and all the power to you. Cheers Luke.
