I have a current basic bitch technique where I bought lots of cheap bottled water, tip a little out of each so they don’t explode when frozen, then freeze those. Throw them all in to the plunge thing and wait till desired temperature, then after I’ve used them take them out and put them in an cooler. Wheel the cooler back to the freezer and refreeze theme. If some have opened a little I can refill with the cold water from the ‘bath’ and tighten the caps again. I want a better way though, ideally I have a bunch of those ice packs that stay cold longer than water would, and have a dedicated freezer. I’m not sure it’s good for my freezer to keep being exposed to 48 bottles of like 65 degrees water (by the time I get them back in). Ideally I have one of those ice machines but hard to justify a restaurant quality machine just for ice bath ice.

His comment about moving to displace the film of water heated by your body is spot on--you miss out if you stay motionless. Also going naked or in a swim brief is way better for that reason--regular swimsuits/jammers retain a film of water close to the skin that your body heats up similar to a thin wetsuit.

do water bottles burst being frozen
@Edbrad5 ай бұрын
@@james882009 They will burst IF you don’t empty some out first. So EMPTY OUT about 10% before you freeze it…. On the Walmart bottles I have, I keep the water level a little above the top of the label…. If it still bursts for you, just empty out a bit more. …If you open it and the ice is pressing right up against the lid, then it’s close to being damaged, so empty out a little more next time you put them back. You’ll slowly experience a few bottles start to break or get weak etc, but a large multipack of cheap bottled water is only around $5-$8 roughly speaking, so it’s not expensive to replace them once and a while.
@Edbrad5 ай бұрын
@@james882009 The cheapest way is probably to buy a dedicated small freezer (like half the size of the ones people turn into freezer baths you can lie down in). The downside to how I’m doing it now is that it’s not good to let your freezer work so hard everyday….. You can also use different containers to cheap water bottles, containers that might be more awkward in a freezer you’re also using for food, as you can find little spaces here and there for 500ml bottles. If you have a large freezer you could go with those large gallon water bottles, since they’re stronger plastic, but the downside is: 1. They’d take longer to freeze! If you can find 1/2 gallon bottles that would be better. 2. If it was a flatter container, they’d freeze faster. 3. If you have a big enough freezer you could make it work, even if they’re not quite as frozen, where the number of bottles might make up for it IMPORTANT: Use or buy a COOLER on wheels so you can transport your ice containers, bottles or whatever, to and from your cold plunge, (even if it’s your bath) to maintain the temperature. Put the containers back in your freezer ASAP, because you want to refreeze the water at the lowest temperature you can, for the longest time you can. Make the water level only as high as you need. I only keep the water level just under 3/4 full. The ice containers will raise the water level anyway. The less water you start with the faster it will chill, and you’ll get to a lower temperature. It takes about an hour and a bit to lower the temperature in my cold plunge. Tap water is like 79 degrees F in Alabama summer, even in the morning, but I spray out the plunge after 3 days. The worst day is the day after I refill it, because it’s harder to cool down. But the second and third day is great, because the starting temperature can be under 60 degree. Today it was about 55! It’s reasonably very hard to get it below 42 in my experience. Unless you’re using your own bath 🛀 get a couple of space blankets. Cover the plunge with a couple of blankets or towels, and then the space blankets. This will help keep it A LOT colder than it was. And my plunge gets full Alabama sun in the afternoon. We’re talking about maintaining the next days starting temp in the 50’s compared with 69F-71F. And the colder you make it, obviously the better it is the next day. If you want to it again later in the day & you’ve immediately put your bottles back in the freezer, you could even throw them back in later and bring it back to temperature. I can speed up the cooling if I have to, but it requires more work. To make it cool faster I must open the bottles and dunk them so the rest of them fills up, and then STIR the water every 15 minutes or so. The colder it gets the slower the water cools because the ice isn’t melting as fast. The bottles will float, so you stir it to make sure the water at the top isn’t slowing down the cooling. If you want it even faster you can grab like 4-5 bottles at the time with ice in them, then dunk them & tip them out, over and over. So grab several, dunk, empty. Then dunk to the bottom and fill them up again. Then grab 4-5 more bottles with ice in them and do the same thing. Then grab more bottles, do the same thing. When you return to the original bottles and tip it out it will have had a chance to cool the new water in there a tipping it out will accelerate the water chilling. … … OR you can just throw them in and wait about 1 hour. …Then it’s easy… After you do it, just take all the bottles out & put them in your cooler, then put them back in your freezer. Simple. If you did my dunk/refill trick you then have to refill them with the pool’s water, so it’s as cool as possible. (Just make sure you leave some room for the ice to expand!) How long the water takes to get down to temperature depends on how cold your water is to start with, the air temperature, and how cool you need it to be. 42 degrees is pretty dang cold, but you’ll find it’s more of struggle to go lower after that without more ice. The ice just sits there in the bottles melting slower. If you can get a shit load of those liquid cooler packs that will be even better than all those bottles. But they’re more expensive. It’s cheap this way, but more bottles means more work each day. And that’s why I say get a dedicated freezer if you can, or you’re raising the temperature of your freezer which might not be good if there’s food in there.

I just did my first ice bath of the summer. During the winter I don’t have to worry about the water staying cold. But I found an ice machine at a car wash where you get 20 pounds of ice for two dollars. so I bought 80 pounds of ice hoping that would be enough. I got 70° water down to 42° in about two hours time with the outdoor temperature of 88°. The key is keeping the ice bath away from sunlight and having a thermal cover over it. After a Wim Hof course I wanted to create an ice Bath but I have limited space living in a big city. I looked at industrial ice cube machines but that requires plumbing and has a large foot print and will yield a 10 kg tray only . Probably not enough. I thought of getting a person sized chest freezer but again that takes up too much space. So, I came across Jason’s video here, just as I’m a doing a same trial of freezing ice in tupperware containers, now just in my small regular freezer, and then add them my regular bathtub as an ice Bath. I hope it will work out as well as jason, in which case I’ll get a small chest freezer also. Seems the simplest and most efficient solution. Thank you for sharing Jasón.

I use 8 containers every time I want to take a bath. once done from the bath, I fill those 8 and put them again in the freezer, but at the bottom of it, and put the remaining 16, which are not used yet, on top of those 8; something that i have noticed when you put the newly filled containers at the bottom and put the frozen ones at the top inside the freezer, the one at the bottom get frozen quickly. I put 5 pails about 90% full of water into the freezer when I get home from work, around 6pm. By 4am when I get up they usually have frozen about 2” or so on top, and the water inside them is near freezing. My bathtub is very deep and spacious, so I just pour those into the tub and top off with cold tap water. I can usually get the water to about 2-4c, so very cold. According to the information Hubermann talks about you need 11 min a week for the benefits. Every other day and a freezer seems to be the way to go. If the freezer breaks not only is it cheaper, but can get another faster than when if the chiller breaks.

Try that sometime if you just wanna freeze your legs longer. The inflammation is so bad at my age over 35 after a 2-3hr walk hike or sk8 sesh. Check my patented fitness gear. You’ll probably need more. Depending on the ambient temp. If it’s 60° out… That might work. If it’s 80° out, you’re gonna have to use about 50 pounds of ice. I eventually ended up purchasing this chiller. Https://www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
