Thanks for the video:) How do you anchor in the fast currant channel?

Any time i see a channel cat video from people who i know live in the area, i know its going to be on the red river. Here in northeast Ohio i dont have many big catfish waters of any species. The only places ive seen with trophy fish are large private lakes with low numbers of them. Theres one of these lakes by my house id never caught a channel cat out of in the 20 years ive fished it until around a 15 pounder bluegill fishing. And its a similar story with another lake i know of, although not quite as rare. The second lake has giant bass and crappie especially for the area so it makes more sense.

my brother has one. he caught 8 channels in about an hour or so using secret 7. I'd say the rod is perfect for channels in a stocked lake.

Great video thanks! I live in devils lake and I occasionally get to forks for catfish but unfortunately I don't have access to a boat... Do you know of any good locations for a shore angler to land some large cats? I also have a hard time getting a hook set, they just play with the bait(gold eye/chicken liver/minnows) and don't take it, am I doing something wrong?
@JasonMitchellOutdoors9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Oliver There is pretty good shore fishing at times right by the Cabelas store in East Grand Forks. If they are backing at it, you might have small cats or gold eye messing with you. Try using a heavy flat river weight that doesn't roll in the current and use a piece of cut bank. Circle hooks can be tough to use from shore so you might have to go with a traditional J hook. Good luck it is a blast!

Im in Michigan and i always use slip sinkers or FREELINE no weight at all. And a 6/0 circle hook. Prevents gut hooking. I put a steel leader on too in case a walleye or pike takes it. I use cut bait shad or bluegill. U gotta make sure the meat doesnt stop ur hook set. I cast out and set my pole in a PVC pipe pushed in sand if im on beach I've slammed some big ones. 20-30 lbs channel cats. I release them. Ya but the thing is with circle hooks if you jerk it it doesnt set the hook. You gotta let them run with it and clothes line themselves kinda.

Do you have a sight I can check out for prices on a guided trip on the red river? I'd go fish it myself but I don't like going on a river that I am not familiar with.

Hey do u guys ever FREE line? Or do you always use slip sinkers and big circle hooks with cut bait? When the fish bites the bait and feels the weight do they ever spit it and not come back? Ive noticed when i freeline with cut bait or only use 1-2 split shot my strike and hook set goes up tremendously. I do like to be able to cast way out with slip sinkers but the snags suck. I wanna try a 3 way rig with the sinker below the hook with 6 lbs test so if it snags the sinker breaks away and my line is free but im scared im gonna miss strikes. What rigs do u guys use?
@JasonMitchellOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Davis on the river, we typically have to use a heavy no roll sinker or pyramid weight as the current is too strong. We typically use a slip rig with a short snell in the current. There are times when you have to set the hook with a J hook but the circle hooks work really well and the fish doesn’t usually swallow the hook.

Jason Mitchell Outdoors circle Js are honestly great for cats. They always seem to hook themselves, I’m not the only one who always hooks them right in the corner of their mouth right lol

roma kozlovsky channel catfish don't get as big as flatheads or blue cats, so these are actually big fish.

@seanroehrs80816 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hurt I agree with Roma, in the Maumee, an AVERAGE channel cat is about 26-30 inches. These are good cats, but it's a stretch to act like ur landing Moby dick, it's a big decent cat, nothing more or less.
@gregsmith60604 жыл бұрын
Those fish we're all around 25" I fish for channels regularly and these are definitely big fish. Yes, they do get bigger but, it's rare. I've seen a couple 35" but never caught one.

Why yall don't cook them cats is beyond me? Donate to a food bank? You proved your skill, now help the hungry. Be hero brothers. Give what your skills provide, food that others don't have. Thank you
@JasonMitchellOutdoors9 жыл бұрын
+Abdulla Ex We do enjoy keeping fish to eat but also like to promote catching and releasing of the larger fish. If everybody kept every fish that they could to donate to a food bank, many of our fisheries would not provide quality fishing today.
