As a total non-magician, I honestly really appreciate the efforts made by the community to keep the secrets safe! Magic is an art where the wonder and mystery add to the performance. I started getting into watching these kinds of routines literally two weeks ago and through watching reaction videos, looking up terms that people drop (e.g. second deal, Mercury fold), and watching just beginner cardistry tutorials during these past two weeks, I've managed to pick up enough to figure some of the simpler parts of several routines. I've been avoiding the videos where they look at each frame and pixel to try to figure out tricks because I feel like that's unfair to the people who put so much effort into an art that combines sleight of hand, misdirection, and understanding of human psychology to impress. Much respect for not revealing, and I really enjoy seeing these performances from a magician's perspective! Thank you!

Oh, I love this, because Anna was a student at the school I used to work at she would always do magic for me either in the elevator, or in the break rooms she later got the test with a friend of mine, who is a magician at the magic castle, and now seeing her on AGT and Penn and teller is amazing. And it’s also amazing that you’re critiquing her as a magician. Super great seeing people move up in their industry I use Siri for this so apologies if some of this doesn’t make sense.

I suspect she intended for the 6 of hearts to land on HER deck too! With this in mind, she may have planned to take it a step further by having the same exact card revealed on Teller's deck at the finale. The first 31 cards from both decks were initially sorted, and she used a memory paradigm (along with a card force) to bring forth any card she wanted. Perhaps due to nerves, the card she was controlling didn't shuffle into her deck correctly - but she recovered nicely with some "patter". It would have been an awesome trick if the 24th card showed on BOTH decks!

I actually feel like she could have done the "mistake" and would have been fine, too. It's done a lot in many acts, where the performer pretends that a trick failed. She could have said something like "Oh this wasn't it? Oh you know what, Teller chose the wrong deck! It'll be the 24th card in his one!" or something, but it was still an impressive performance, especially if it is as difficult as I suspect it is

I think her goal was to have the card show up on both decks, but since it didn't work out she already had the "patter" in mind to make it come across like a gag. There would be no point in doing all that show & tell with the other deck if it wasn't intended IMO.

She had memorized the cards from the sequence 1 to 30 in both decks (which were obviously the same). Then when she asked for a date, given 24, she knew what card was positioned in place of card 24 in Teller's deck (which is 6 of hearts). All she had to do now was make sure that when they asked her to stop, she had to make it look like she spontaneously stopped at 6 of hearts.

I imagine that she actually was attempting to place the 6 of hearts in the 24th position during the cardistry as well to have the card be 24th in both decks, but probably due to nerves ended up accidently placing it off by 1 or 2 so she fell back on the "that would have been cool right? But the real trick is ACTUALLY in Teller's deck!" But if the cardistry stuff worked then she gets that bonus effect of finding the card in both decks. Pretty cool routine.

The trick was always about the other deck. She was using the first deck as a distraction.

I think it's quite likely. The way she slammed the cards on the table and said 'done' might have been covering a mistake due to nerves. She set up the trick in such a way that even if she made a mistake with the cardistry, she would still have a way of ending on a reveal, but she probably had a double reveal planned because that would have made it even better

Pretty sure I've seen comments somewhere in these Fool Us videos saying that the really good magicians always have one or two ways of ending any particular trick in case something goes wrong so to my mind that's a perfectly reasonable assumption.

The fact she never touched the golden deck after giving it to teller meant there was only 1 way of doing it. 3:11 in HD you can see the "break" in the deck, where the 6 of hearts is. Amazing performance nonetheless!

She essentially knew ("great memory") the order of the gold deck, so when Alyson picked 24, she knew she needed Penn to "pick" the 6 of Hearts as this was in position 24 in the gold deck. As she's shuffling the deck and rifling through it for Penn, you can see that there's a slight gap before the card, making it easier for her to stop on exactly the right card.

When Penn actually said stop in slow motion, the card was 7 spades but she continued to stop 6 hearts. But how she position 6 in deck is amazing.

I don't actually think great memory plays a part on that trick. Because if that suggest that Anna knows all the position or order of the card in the golden deck, then you don't need to memorize a lot. In fact it is as simple as arranging the card from 1 to 13 (Ace to King). Then to know what card is in a certain position, you just simple divide it by 4. The remainder will then represent which type of card (Example: 0 for heart, 1 for spade, 2 for clubs and 3 for diamond). Hence 24 divided by 4 equals to 6 of heart. That is why she shuffle the 23 cards in the table because it contains all suits of 1 to 5 and the other 6's.

For sure, that's the only way to do it, but the question is how. We're they all false cuts and she's actually able to force any card on a riffle? I kind of doubt it. More likely she has some method of controlling any card from the starting position to a break... But either way she needs to be able to find any card in the deck (well, up to the first 31 given the selection method) and force it. Impressive stuff.

Your commentary, Jason, on that video-cut that lost a bit of time, was eye-opening for me. You identified such an occurrence as probably done by the producers to leave out these moments that live audience would not notice, but give video viewers the chance to see the trick too easily. Thanks for that insight, because it makes sense and I feel now such editing is forgivable.

I think that the editing is more than "forgivable" but is obligatory. We know there is no "magic" occurring, but a card trick, and sometimes a camera is located at just the wrong place, and shows a view that no human participant or watcher, would ever see, or at least ever be able to understand without slow motion. When a participating magician locates others on stage for the performance, they're not allowed to shift their chair, or standing location. In essence the editors have decided, I think appropriately, the a particular camera location is giving a view that would not be permitted if the performer would be locating the cameras.

Both decks were originally set up the same. Her skill at cardistry, and her astounding memory, allowed her to pick the card to stop on that was indeed originally in the 24th position of both decks when she was to stop her flip pick. The cardistry was a great misdirection in the effect of getting the 6H in the approximate location so that she could stop on it for the card pick. Brilliantly done, but these guys have pretty much seen and/or done it all. A person would have to come up with quite the original trick in hopes of fooling them. She is quite skilled, but still throwing together parts of multiple tricks that have been done before. She did quite well, but the way more experienced magicians saw what was happening at several steps and figured a great memory was in play to pull this off.

I want to say that both decks were identically ordered in the beginning. Her cardistry skills are just that good that she is able to stop on a given numbered card in the deck. In this case the 24th card. If you look close she stops at That card a slight bit before Penn said stop. That way no matter what as long as she got the first part right. She would get the right card in tellers deck. Hence the really good memory. Basically muscle memory of how to get to card 24.

After watching the full video, I still didn't 'get' the reveal at first. I mean, Allison had a free choice of a number and Penn seemed to have a free choice of a card after the deck was divided so much with small packets flying through the air. Then I realized this was a re-styling of the Invisible Deck routine except with a two choices to intersect to make it seem more impossible. Anna could know the order of the deck in Teller's pocket (like a performer knows in the Invisible Deck routine), but what good is that if the card choice were actually a free choice? That's when I realized that Anna did a beautiful, invisible, force. That also means that all that dazzling artistry was just one amazing false shuffle with the card stack order that shows the 52nd card first for the fan of the cards. Anna has to more quickly fan through the first 21 to 24 cards a little faster to get the spectator to stop at a number below what can possibly match the birth day number because no one can say stop quickly enough to include a low-number birth day if you started fanning from card 1. You have to stack possible birth day numbers at the back and fan through the first 20 or so cards quickly. I'm not explaining myself well, but I think you got the idea. Anna is incredible. Just incredible.

She knows all the cards from 1-31 (the possibility number of days from a birthday). So when she heard 24 she knew it was the 6 of Hearts. Now she just had for force the 6H. She did so beautifully.

It's a very simple trick, with enhanced difficulty because of all the flourishes. Using a birthday number only allows 31 numbers that Allison could have chosen, so her memorization of 31 cards are simple when you arrange the first 31 cards in even and odd numbers, plus opposite suit form. The forced card is found by edging after manipulating the forced card into place through her flourishes. That's my take on it anyways.

The magic happens a 3:12 this is where she forces card #24 at Penn calling "stop". and how that is done, I have no idea. But she clearly knows that card #24 in Teller's deck is the six of hearts and so has to stop on that card.

Both decks are identical and she memorized the order of both. It doesn't matter what card they stopped on. That's why Penn said you have a really great memory and asked if she knew what he meant. All the cardistry was exactly that she never changed the order of the cards before the count she just made it look like it. Incredibly talented young lady

@@kstig2672 I think it does matter because Teller's deck is never touched. So she has to force the 6 of hearts one way or the other.If for example she stopped on card #10 in her deck, that card would not match card #24 in Teller's deck. She has to force the six of hearts for the trick to work.

Your on POINT .... agreed on everything on what you commented on the whole video. And kudos for you to apologized and correcting yourself. I have noticed it, how on TV the producer or the cameras play along with the magician to make the magic more presentable). Like in Fool and Teller, and just like in AGT, sometimes you don't get to see some shuffling or camera showing something to the TV's audience as a mis-direction.... and that shrunk of missing piece can reveal, or give additional information to reveal the magic. As for Anna, at that age, is super impressive to see someone achieve that level on self-taught. Her manipulation with card is extraordinary / sensational..

1.) Pick deck. Didn't matter which one because both come in the same order. 2.) Ask for #. got 24. This told her that it was the 6 of hearts by knowing the order that the cards come packaged. 3.) Next she needs to make Pen stop on the 24th card. Takes a lot of skill. 4.) The rest is all show.

I would never figured it out on my own. The weird thing is, knowing how she did it makes it more amazing to me than not knowing. Cause now I can actually gauge the level of skill and intelligence she had. Instead of just saying oh must be just some trickery.

I agree, it was still impressive. As far as how she made Pen stop on card 24. She is very good at knowing exactly how many cards on in her hands from practice. For example. Do it over and over again until you can fan them out like she did and get the exact number you want every time based on about a second or 2 delay. This is the most difficult part of the trick because you don’t know for sure when they are going to say stop. But if you are a little early or late, no one is really going to notice. You just have to hit that 24 and know you did. One thing that was weird that she said towards the end was “it would have been 23 but it is 24” when Teller was counting them out. I think this gave it away how she did it too, but I’m not exactly sure why she said that.

First finger crease is blocking the 24th card and the rest of the finger is spreading the card. When penn says stop, she drops pressure so the stack flips to the card the crease is putting pressure on thus forcing the 6 of hearts.

Sorry rewatched it. She shifts the deck slightly or of place on that 24th card and is using extreme pressure to keep it in place. The ripple is again a distraction. Ripple threw, “stop” and her finger just has to hit that little bump of the marked 6 of hearts and boom penn “picked” a card

He did, and Penn did, too. She memorized the first 31 cards (probably identical in both decks). The moment Allison called out her number, she figured out from memory what card she needed, so she rearranged the deck (the edited part), moved it to the middle, and force it to Penn.

I think when penn said: you have a great memory. It was that Allison picked a number first then she forced that number to penn when she was making it look like penn had a free choice. I stopped the video at 8:52 so haven't watched Penn and Teller's response yet but I think its pretty obvious to me how the trick was done. She had the position of every card in both decks memorized so when the date was given she knew what card was in that position in the deck in Teller's pocket. Since there are only 31 possible days in the month she made sure that card was somewhere in the middle of her deck to make the forced card less obvious. To do this she had the cards prearranged such that the cards in position 32-52 in Teller's deck were about half in front and half towards the back of her deck since these numbers could not be chosen (it would be impossible to force a card if it was the very first or last card in the deck). Since she had the order memorized in her deck as well she knew where to stop when rifling through the deck. At that point the trick was done all the rest was just a distraction. It would have been even more amazing if she shuffled her deck first and still know exactly where the chosen card was. In any case forcing the card without looking at the deck and knowing exactly where to stop must be incredibly hard!! Oh one more thing, the trick could work if either deck was chosen by Teller, of course the cards could not be arranged in the same order in both decks for it to work.

heres my take on it, The deck teller has in his pocket is like a Svengali deck where every other card is the 6 of hearts using rough and smooth principle. The pick the day of birth limits anyone to choose from 1 -31 as theres no more than 31 days in a month so this makes sense if every other card is the 6 of hearts because you cant double cards on every 52 cards or youd have 104 cards. This way if shes using thinner cards the theres 31 regular cards and 31 6 of hearts attached (rough and smooth) as far as the first deck, she forced stopped to the 6 of hearts in which i believe was a timing force or using another gimmicked deck with more than one 6 of hearts so the timing will always be stopped at the forced card. We really dont see much of the cards values but when we do they can easily be stuck together and quickly shuffled around on the table appearing as different cards with the 6 of hearts on the backs

My thoughts after watching this video the first time: Anna has already an algorithm for the 31 days of ordering the cards in the golden card box. For example, 20 (2 + 0) = two of hearts, 21 (2 + 1) = three of hearts, 22 (2 + 2) = four of hearts, 23 (2 + 3) = five of hearts, 24 (2 + 4) = six of hearts, ..., 1 (0 + 1) = ace of diamonds, 2 (0 + 2) = two of diamonds, ..., 11 (1 + 1) = two of clubs, etc. So, Anna only needs to remember the algorithm. Anna shuffles the cards at 6:40. So, the viewers can't see or can't find out her algorithm of ordering the cards. I have to say, Anna did a brilliant job on fooling us.

The trick is when Penn says "stop", she had already riffled to and slowed down to the 24th card Allison selected and stopped on the card she wanted not the card Penn wanted. Both Decks were ordered the same at the start. Therefore she knows for a fact the 6 was in the gold deck at the 24th position. Super simple with card memorization. You're welcome.

Just before she says "Now I'm going to riffle through the cards" at 3:07, just after the cut you're talking about, I think she does a really smooth deck cut, to position the deck for a force to the number she was given. Both decks are identical order, and it's an order she has memorized, so she knows which card is at position 24 in both decks - she just has to cut the deck to make sure the force looks natural. The slight delay on her stopping when told to stop was the force, and everything else was just pure cardistry.

So i think it is okay for them to leave out a scene where it would be able to see exactly how a act did the trick because the show is not to show everyone how the act did it (in this case pen and teller wouldn't need to talk in mysteries) but to look if pen and teller are able to see trough the missdirection and see how it was done. So we kind a have the same chances to not watch the keypart again and again as you couldn't if you where there But i think she did a great job and even if she did something that could give away the trick in the cut i'd bet most people wouldn't be able to see it while she was performing

The thing that fooled you is the order. Anna asks for a number before the force. Thus she’ll just have to memorize a mapping from 1-31 to the first cards in the decks. Then in the cut out part she’ll have to somehow prepare a force for that one card, which is the most tricky bit in this, and since we don’t know the section, we do not know how hard this actually was. I expect that there was at least some sort of shuffling.

i believe she made Allison choose the "day" of birth which only has 30 to 31 days in total. She's pre-arranged both packs and memorized 31 cards from the top of the pack. She can easily bookmark that with a finger and do a forced pick as she is flicking through the deck. When she asked Penn what the card was and as she looked at the 24th card, if that was the 6 of hearts she would have revealed it to be. But i think with all the shuffling that wasn't the card, so the second pack became the back up plan

The girl could have chosen any number from 1 to 31 (any birth day not the month). Ana knows exactly what card is placed on any of that range on the deck. For example 6 of hearts is placed 24th on the deck. Ana knows it. If the girl chose another number, ana will force stop to whatever the corresponding card of that number. That's how it is played. Bit high level of difficulty on the cardistry. Excellent performance. Not an easy one.

The crucial part of this trick is forcing the stop to any of the 31 cards. Forcing a stop to one and the same card at all times is easier. What is hard is forcing a stop to a specific card from 1 to 31. That's precision. That's what make Ana's trick amazing. Although she has a room for a bit of error. If she happens to stop one card earlier or one card late she can still play the trick by saying the card below or the card on top is the subject card.

@@said4220 Ana should know the cards order to serve as her reference in case something goes wrong. If i am not mistaken, i think the 6 of hearts is one card earlier to what should be the forced stop. For this reason when the second deck of card is being counted Ana said, that should be 23 but that is 24. Ana knows that when she forced stopped in the first deck and got the 6 of hearts, she knows she is one card ahead. Meaning 6 of hearts is the 23rd card. To fix the mess, she manipulated the counting on the second deck saying the 23rd card is the 24th. Knowing the order of the cards save her act.

Magic is best when you can keep your eyes on the every move of the magician to be truly fooled. Cutting cameras from the control room removes the magical aspect from the act and introduces the doubt for the audience. Kudos to Penn and Teller for showcasing this 20 year old and giving her a boost. But let the act stand on its own two feet and learn to respect the quality of intimacy and interaction that makes the experience real for the participants.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of indexing and a force. She knows what the first 31 cards are (good memory - though given the way she made Alison pick it could have been narrowed) and she then hears Alison's number knows which card to force and then forces that card.

I don't see the need for memorizing any card sequence. I think "good memory" might refer to a different way of storing information on sort of the same type of storage medium as some early computers used, and that this memory was used in the preparation for the Jedi move.

The magic is her skill to shift the selected card and make the stop look "random". That's her card manipulation skill.

Number is 24, she recalls what is 24th card in Tellers deck and forces same card on Penn. That means both deck were in same order OR she had them both memorized, maybe partially since there is more cards in deck, than days in month. Now I know why this camera cut when she picks up the deck bothered Jason :) Also I don't know much about forcing, but isn't it hard to be able to force any card from the deck ? Even if she had it memorized, she know that it's 6 of hearts, and she knows where it is... she's counting while she riffles ?

Re: Editing magic performances. There are certain time constraints that have to be adhered to for a television show, so each performance from intro to judgement must fit in its given time slot. In order to make that happen, sometimes a few seconds will be cut from here or there where the editor determines that removing that piece of the performance will have minimal impact on the presentation; I expect those editors do not include any of the magicians involved with the show. In fact, on a game show in the United States, which this show would be classified as, you have to show anything that affects the final outcome, so the editors have to very careful about what does get cut from a performance. Also, it has been stated many times, by multiple hosts, that none of the performances rely on camera editing to be performed, well not P&T's cameras anyway; some of the magicians have manipulated other cameras and images to present their effects.

​@@johanh6259 Presets on 23 and adding a card on top is a nice way to go about this with 1 deck however, she had to manipulate a second deck she wasn't allowed to touch to make this work. Vegas solution for this is her knowing the positions of the cards in the preset up to card 31 and her forcing whichever card she needs to force to match that position, which to me sounds more likely than doing some crazy sleight of hand in Tellers own hands without him knowing.

Had she not been using a memory trick the director would have told Penn & Teller they were wrong and she earned the trophy as has happened before in an earlier season. I can’t even shuffle or do magic tricks with cards because I have skillful hands of a lumberjack, but, my guess would be also that... memorize part of the deck and then use the force on the other one. I’m sure there might be a more refined way to do that but as a layman who picked up somethings by watching yt, I’m fairly happy to know that I’m not that far off of a possible solution. 🙂

Actually from getting your audience to suspend disbelief performing cardistry and magic together kills the magic. If you see someone pulling of lots of fancy flourishes and shuffles then they find your card the lay audience will just think well they can do lots of fancy shuffles, so they probably just did that. If you can at least partially suspend your audiences disbelief by making it appear that you didn't use sleights it comes across as being more magical. Magic is effectively the art of doing something whilst making it look like you are doing nothing, if you look like you are doing a whole lot of something then it does just become juggling.
