Theory 1: at around 4.32, after Penn hands the shuffled deck back to Shawn, Shawn fans the deck so Penn may choose a card. I'm supposing in this tiny, tiny window when Shawn's hands reach out and surround the deck, that he's able to load the force (to make a fan of multiple Sevens of Diamonds) over the top of the shuffled deck - and so establishing the first part of the trick. As for the rest of the trick, as Jason points out, there's a deck switch - the box is ready (but for self-adhesive flaps, which you can see momentairly at 4:44) so Shawn can sliide the signed 7 of diamonds in. The 'recap' sequence is misdirection to keep Penn from eyeing the 'cards' in Shawn's hand, which is actually (already) the final box, with a playing card over the top to disguise it - I really liked Shawn's premise for removing that disgusing card too ("Would that be impressive?". So now it's all there, in place, waiting to be revealed. Absolute masterpiece of a trick. Jason, if I'm on the money but giving too much away, I totally respect you might want to delete this comment. Theory 2: Shawn Farquhar froze time (using a TimeFreezy 3000™) at around 4:50, robbed a bank, ate some lunch, and came back when he was ready, to finish the trick. I'll admit I'm not sure which of my two Theories is closer to the truth, but either way Shawn is an amazingly talented magician!

Yeah, definitely a force for the 7d. Cards were fanned face down. Didn’t see him get the multiple 7d’s out but I’m sure he did. Maybe from his cuffs. Then, I believe he used adhesive to reseal the deck. The flap would have been open, the cards gimmicked so he can slide it into position, the. He used his fingers to ensure the seal is tight. So no slits or cuts.

Jason, I love your videos with funny/enlightening comments. Keep uploading :-) Shawn Farquhar is a master and very entertaining. This is how I would do this trick: The first deck is a brand-new deck (non-trick), which is opened for the audience. Performer keeps the one joker in this deck for an excuse to come later. Penn shuffles the deck, and gives them to Performer. Performer immediately does a deck switch, which contains all 7 of diamonds. When Performer has Penn chose a card now, it genuinely looks like a free choice. Penn signs the 7 of diamonds, which is one of the 52 identical cards. Second deck switch happens now, which contains a prepared deck with open flap and a joker as a place holder. Performer inserts the signed 7 of diamonds on top of the joker that holds the place in the ordered deck, which is ready to be sealed. The deck is placed into Penn’s hands, and the place-holding joker is immediately removed without comment to the audience of why this action is needed. Distracting joke and comments placed here. The flap is closed and the warm hands are held tightly on the deck for >30 seconds to seal the wrapping closed. Beautiful performance.
@bosorot2 жыл бұрын
agreed with the comment except the joker card is used to make a box look a deck of card. Box can have a flap with a piece of hard clear plastic to force a 7 of diamonds into the correct position.

There is a glue that temporarily sticks like a weak egg white glue that once released is almost invisible to touch. So the cards could have been temporarily glued in two piles so the card can be slipped inside somehow _then_ when they're fanned the cards are seperated and the card appears in its place (reversed.) It's a mystery how he did really, it's a good trick. *He deserved to win*

This is a brilliant trick as Shawn forces the 7 of diamonds on Penn and slides the signed card into a carefully prepared box. (1) Penn shuffles the deck and hands them back to Shawn. (2) Shawn adds a set of 7 of diamonds from his right hand. The deck is now noticeably thicker (4:33) than the new deck as Penn touches a card (much clearer in the original video). (3) The deck switch occurs in Shawn's left hand hidden from both Penn and the camera, as he uses it to hold his coat open to get the pen (4:40). (4) His left hand returns with the prepared box, not the deck, covered with a joker (clearly seen in 4:44). (5) Shawn slides the signed card into the open bottom of the box (the 8 of diamonds is pulled out slightly as a shelf to mark the spot). You can see Shawn using his right thumb, covered by the palm of his hand, to shut the box and close the cellophane wrapper (4:52). I once replaced a signed cigarette through the bottom in an apparently brand-new never-opened packet of cigarettes.

My theory on how this trick is done. The trick uses two decks. The first deck is a brand new and unopened, while the second deck is opened and has the premium cards and jokers removed. In addition he has custom box prepared with a ready seal and wrapping. 1. The first deck is unpacked and given to Penn to shuffle. 2. When the deck is handed back, a deck switch occurs with the second deck (which will be in new deck order) 3. Penn then selects a card from the second deck and signs it. This is a free selection. 4. The position of the selected card from the deck is remembered such as by slightly sliding over the card above or below 5. When the card is handed back, the signed card is put back in the deck in the right spot. 6. The second deck is now put in the box and the box and wrapping is sealed. A couple of obvious things with this trick. 1. Deck switch: Penn shuffles the deck, while the deck in the reveal is in new deck order. This means a deck has to have been switched. 2. The reveal deck is not a new unsealed deck, but sealed by the magician: Not only because it contains Penn's signed card, but also because it's missing the premium cards and jokers. This means that the seal and wrapper had to have been put on by Shawn.

Apparently they thought that magicians being masters of shuffling cards can deliver perfect results. And did they deliver? ... oh boy they delivered ... just not a random number generator ... not even a pseudo-random one. Excluding the cases where a perfect shuffle generated a perfect brand new deck order, they generated the full value of pi, speed of light in vacuum (also in glass and in water), Planck constant, reduced Planck constant, electron mass, fine-structure constant, vacuum magnetic permeability constant and many, many more numbers none of which was even remotely random! ;)

I will give you guys some important clues but I will not reveal the full method. First off, Shawn is a world champion card magician, so the fumbling with the pen and deck switch was INTENTIONAL not due to nerves. Also he was wearing a "oversized" suit. This should be enough to put you on path to solving this.If not, I will come back later to reveal a little more.
@fuzzydrawrings2694 жыл бұрын
Notice they NEVER actually show the card that Penn signed. If you could compare this card with the revealed signed card, I'm certain they would not be identical (neither the signature not its exact placement). See, the thing with celebrities, is their "autograph" is well known and not particularly hard to replicate. A *VERY EASY* way to do this trick would be to forge Penn's signature on a particular card well before the act, then reseal it in the deck. Then during the act you force the same rank/suit on Penn from a different deck and have him sign it. Then you switch out the prepared sealed deck for the deck you were using when you place it between his hands. The card will look like it has his signature on it, so he will say "yeah, that's my signature!"
@johnkean68524 жыл бұрын
Possibly but PnT would have noticed if it were that simple and not let him win
@fuzzydrawrings2694 жыл бұрын
@@johnkean6852 There really isn't time for them to notice as he snatches the signed card away immediately so no one gets a good look at it. Simplicity has nothing to do with whether it fools them or not. Consider David Parr fooling them with an extremely simply yet very impressive card trick that only required a piece of double-sided tape.
@JasonParkerMagic4 жыл бұрын
I don't think there was a duplicate signed card. I think it was the same one as from the beginning. I'm sure Penn, although he is a celebrity, he is also a magician.... so when he signs the card he would sign it in such a way (or specific location on the card) that he would be able to identify it uniquely.
@fuzzydrawrings2694 жыл бұрын
@@JasonParkerMagic That's possible, but I think Penn intentionally avoids throwing monkey wrenches like that into a magician's act. He also gave Penn specific instructions: "Write your *name* on the *face* of the card" and immediately took the card from Penn after he wrote his name on it. Honestly, if it were really the same card, he would have shown it before hiding it in the deck - that would have made the effect extraordinarily impressive! It also would have been extraordinarily impressive if he had done the trick, or at least the signed name part, with a random person from the audience instead of a celebrity whose name and handwriting are known beforehand. Don't get me wrong - it's a ballsy trick to be sure (the magician moves fast and has excellent patter), and that is part of what makes it work because Penn would not be thinking to make a special mark on the card.
@RoderickEtheria4 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzydrawrings269It can't really be a duplicate card. Penn and Teller would have noticed something like that, particularly as it is almost unnatural for you to sign your name two times and it be the exact same way both times. Close, yes, but identical, almost impossible.

Card was forced. After Penn says he fooled them, you can see Shawn pulling out a 7 of diamonds out of his chest pocket. The deck he switches to is specifically prepared, I think. It’s already wrapped in plastic and with a paper seal ready, but it’s still open, and he closes it all up in the same move as he’s putting in the card. The only part I can’t really get was how did he put it in the correct location. My only idea is practice. He simply knows the exact spot of a 7 of diamonds in the deck.
@kolosmenus3 жыл бұрын

I'll take a stab. Everything up to when Penn shuffles the deck doesn't matter. Shawn performs an amazing slight “deck switch” between the time Penn places the deck back in Shawn's hands and Shawn fans the deck for selection. Penn is now presented a swapped deck of all 7 of diamonds. This is the force of the 7 of diamonds to deal with the future deck prepped for a perfect 7 of diamonds position. When Shawn reached for the pen/marker, the loaded deck is produced. It has one open end so he can insert the signed card. The open end is UNSEALED plastic. The need to “first” pull out the joker is a necessary part of the trick. This top card is a special device, possibly a heat source (cellophane only needs brief low heat to melt to itself. I may be overthinking it, it may very well be a contact cement and the removal of the card allows the two sides to touch an seal). When the “joker card” is first removed from Penn’s clasped hands, the bottom part is always obscured in Shawn’s hands. The thickness of the card is obscured as well. Whatever resealed that prepped deck happened in the lower portion of Shawn’s palm. Now the joker is placed away in the pocket so the device is never seen again. At this point the prepped deck waiting for a signed 7D to be slotted in the side has been resealed and placed in Penn’s hand. Now they are just talking. In the end, the box and jokers are removed to observe the fact another different “joker” wan placed in there during the deck seal. I suspect this slight between Penn placing the shuffled cards in Shawn’s hands and Shawn producing a fanned deck of all 7Ds for Penn is where a possible “camera edit” may have shortened the time when this moment occurred. It is unfortunate there was a camera scene cut between the deck returning to Shawn’s hands and Shawn fanning the deck to Penn for selection. Lastly, it KILLS me that when the deck is swapped when the pen is removed, the top portion is protruding and Shawn has to slide it into the deck to “re-square” it with his left index finger. Also, when Shawn slides Penn’s card in he “recaps”. As if to say he just resealed his prepped deck.

Unfortunately they have had to do some "camera editing" just because the magician flubbed a move and a camera happened to be at just the right angle so they'd switch cameras or cut a small section out. So yeah no CGI, stooges, trap doors or anything like that but tricks where the audience couldn't see, sometimes the camera(s) did, and it had to be cut. They've also left many of those in too. I've seen some obvious moves but that's how you know they really do want to keep it live like as possible.

btw, Aesop is pronounced E-sop as the Ae = E (e.g. also in Caesar Emperor of Rome). According to the fable, the man required the bridle and mount to be placed on the horse BEFORE doing the job of removing the stag, so the help came with the pre-condition to be satisfied before the favour was done. The simple meaning to the fable could be... and that is how the horse came to be the servant of man... OR that one's subservience to another must be made willingly... OR this was a lesson in negotiation... OR that the man tricked the horse into becoming subservient for doing a favour that could only be done by the man whilst sitting astride the horse and above the stage in order to use the horse to corral the stag out of the meadow. On a sinister note, the Mafia would do favours for protection money.

My take. First if Penn did not sign his name of that card it would be a piece of cake. The 7D had to be forced. If not then he had to have an index of 52 card decks ready to swap with. I am 99% sure the 7D was forced. The swap was obvious as Penn pointed out. The new swapped deck was mostly sealed with some type of self-sealing flap that when closed completed the new deck look. The deck of cards had to have some type of break or maybe the card below the 7D was pulled out bit so he knew exactly where to slide the 7D into. The rest is history.

I do blame camera trickery or editing issues with America’s Got Talent. (AGT) But not Penn & Teller. I do believe that multiple decks were used, I do feel that Penn had a free choice, and signed his choice. Sleight of hand or real magic are the only two options. Since real magic is banned from the show, that only leaves one option.
@sbaxter42074 жыл бұрын
if it was not a card force on the 7d, he has to in under 3 seconds locate the 7d, remove the 7d from the new deck and leave a gap in that slot so that he can feed in pens signed card. Maybe a mechanical device in his pocket with 2 button clicks 7 + d removes the 7 of diamonds, opens up that slot in the new deck, so he can feed in the selected card in full view, with some type of very small aid/guide tool that can be hidden under and removed with the joker afterwards....Or he is an actual wizard?

“You could not have chosen a better card.” Meaning: the card i forced on you. Notice that the second deck was wrapped and sealed without the advert cards and the jokers. At least that is what Shawn made us believe and Penn didn’t show us when fanning the deck. Notice that Shawn states and showed to leave one joker in, but has both jokers in his pocket at the end. Or jokers, with an S at the end, was a slip of the tongue.

I have a theory (Just thought of) on getting the card back into the deck, reversed, and in the perfect spot, if the 7 of diamonds was forced, every time. To me, it's all about the setup of the second deck. With choice words here, the bottom of the card box would remind me of a piggy bank. All that is needed is a signature, insert card, and seal the bottom. Field goal every time, the sea has been parted, or the peanut butter and jelly in a sandwich (that's way too many hints)!

Yes this is how I am thinking about it too :) It's just that upon first watching it seemed there was no force possible. But I realize it MUST be a force.

@@JasonParkerMagic but how can it be a force when the card is signed.. the card inside the box that penn is fanning is allso signed.... so even if it MUST be a force, how can it be?. actualy i went back and watched it again in detail. The selection was not random. He switched the deck before selection, and the switched deck just contained 7 of diamonds. That's it. The new brand deck were already prepared, the seven of diamonds were already placed to the right place. Quite and easy trick, slight hand needed just for switching the decks two times.
@adambrackston34713 жыл бұрын
There was no deck switch for the 7, watch Penn fans the deck, shuffles the deck, and then it is fanned out for selection but never leaves sight
@E942-h2d4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure, but I assume he has actually 53 decks with him (impressive number), the starting deck and then 52 different decks with the correct card missing. You see him putting the deck with his right hand into his pocket and then having a deck in his left hand. He even acts like he still has the cards instead of the box in his hand ("put the cards into your hand" and then drawing a joker to act like Penn actually has a pile of cards in his hand). His decks are such that he can directly slide the card into the correct position and can "wrap" the deck shut with plastic, he also pays attention to hold his hands in such a way that Penn only can see exactly this side and not more. And done. Some part may be missing, but I think that is the way of doing it.

I think farquhar switches the deck after pen has shuffled them to a deck with all same cards, so he forces the card, after that he places the card in a deck with slit which only allows card to go on the right spot

They definitely edit the acts for tv, removing things that aren't important to the trick. And I could even see how the camera angles might reveal something that they don't want anyone to see that could give the trick away, and therefore they remove that. However, "camera tricks" can't be how they fool P&T as they are right there, and of course with this trick Penn didn't see what you posit may have happened.
@sisgaia4 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your assumption that there was some kind of slit in the box. I think that he had two decks. When he put them into Penn's hands at the start, he did a swap and inserted a genuine new deck. After opening the virgin pack, he swapped them back. The fact that the spare joker and the ad cards were missing underlines that method. I didn't see him do it, so I will have to look again, maybe on slo-mo, but on first viewing, that is how I think he did it. (I also haven't listened to P&T's comments yet, so I might change my mind then.)
@sisgaia4 жыл бұрын
OK, I am going to have to modify my statement. Obviously there was some deck switching, and I still disagree about there being a slit in the box. My initial comment, however, ignored the fact that the original deck was shuffled, and the deck at the end was in new deck order. The card that Shawn pulled out and claimed was the joker was of course Penn's card. He never showed it to be a joker, but the comments fit in so well with the rest of his patter that it was easy to miss that. I still think that there was a second deck switch when the second pack was opened, but I can't see it. It would be not to the original deck, though, which has been shuffled. It would be to a third deck. I do find the move at 6:50 where he appears to pull the cards slightly up from the pack box is odd, but I can't see anything happening, and I have no idea how he would get the card reversed into the proper position during the course of that trick. So I guess even with rewatching it in slo-mo, I'm fooled.
