The “innate” ability is most likely a drive and will to force yourself to practice. He said the first day he got the 7 string he practiced that section for 10 hours. If he was born with the talent he wouldn’t have to spend 10 hours practicing it. The natural part is the “obsessing” portion, which Jason has. Saying someone is naturally talented kind of dismisses the hard work and dedication they put into their craft.

Teo Sp This is gonna sound hilarious. I actually practised so hard that I injured my hand on april 2016, by that time I accomplished playing the follow the signs solo at perfect speed and clean. It was a very complicated, musician's related contracture of the thumb that took 8 months treatment. I also had to attend special teachers that taught me a new technique for picking with the hand 100% relaxed. Now I'm back to playing again, once again, amping up the metronome 1bpm a day, this time with a relaxed hand and warming up and stretching. This new technique goes so easy on the hands that my sweeps sound cleaner than ever. The shredding part is a little trickier, it's hard not to get tense when picking real fast but it can be done and I'll get there eventually.

Mason Stanley Tbh, I agree. A Voice Within is my favorite album and In Time includes their best song ever written (Epiphany), which both surpass The Shape of Colour. I don't like the clean sound to Prog anyway.

Looking at your playing i cant help but notice that you are not a light picker while playing the solos. am i correct and if so what was your practice regime to build up speed and clarity while keeping that power. I am a hard picker by nature and cannot get myself to lighten up significantly while playing solos. ive been told to play lighter if i would like to increase my speed and clarity. would you say that i should do that or should i keep pushing with a moderately hard picking technique for solos and just keep practicing. I ask this because i have reached a plateau and it feels very difficult to proceed beyond this and i would like to figure out if i am heading in the right direction.

Practice with metronome and pick with your arm not your wrist unless you're doing 8ths. Clench your fist while your picking 16ths and it helps improve stability. Takes a while getting used to but it's worth it. That's how Jason picks it.

Well, he seems to alternate pick mostly by a forearm. Although the wrist movement is the most effective one to use (like Gilbert, Petrucci, Bettencourt etc) it doesn't mean that you can't get amazing results with the forearm movements. Just it takes more time, effort and stamina. But It doesn't really matter. The only thing that matters is the RESULT (clean, fast and accurate) and Jason's result is amazing. He can pick and sweep better than most shredders who use the wrist.
