Tonex: Forget Amps.... Is Tonex The Ultimate Overdrive Pedal??

I love my Tone-x. Tons of great captures and usable as a plugin. I use it going into a Synergy tube amp and it sounds phenomenal. Even going into a solid state amp it sounds very good.

Blue Cat Axiom allows easy mix and match Tonex or any other brand sim pedals with different amps, cabs and fx of other sim manufacturers saved as presets.

Jason, this is an approach I've been thinking about for a while. In your experience, if I set up one patch in the TONEX as a blank in order to bypass the tonex in my paddle board going to my tube amp, does it color the sound in your opinion? For my blank patch I have cabinet and amp model and pedal capture turned off. Great coverage for tonex. I enjoy your videos and will be adding some of your models to my rig

Thanks so much for the kind words and glad you enjoy the videos. I haven't found that the Tonex Pedal collars the sound at all. I don't think you would need to setup a blank preset though. You can bypass the preset by engaging and disengaging it from he Pedal itself. Hope that is helpful :-)

What do you think about using the tonex for just compression or Reverb into a real tube amp

I guess it could work. My first thought is that there are probably better solutions but might be interesting to try :-)

Hi Jason bought some of your tones can I only insert the tones one at a time. Or can I load all presets tones at the same time and creat a folder with your name on Thanks Kimball

Hi Kimball, First off thanks so much for grabbing some tones. You sure can load more than one at a time. You can create a preset folder and name it how you would like and then simply drag and drop all of the presets into that folder and you should be all set. Let me know if it works out alright. I think tonex is a little sub par. Though better than many options. Your top options are going to be Quad Cortex and NAM player.

I think the best option is a good collection real amps with a collection of the real distortion/overdrive pedals on a very well built pedal board and a roadie to deal with it for you. Considering the price though, the ToneX pedal being 1/4 the price and the software even cheaper, of a Quad Cortex, the ToneX with proper captures provides what a lot of today's players want.

I thought that too, but Leo Gibson actually did a really interesting test capturing real amps with the Tonex and QC (and Axe Effects, Kemper, Helix, etc), and then laying them over the original recording and flipping the phase. That way they should cancel each other out if they are a perfect match, and you will only hear the differences. Interestingly, the Tonex ended up being a closer match to the original amp. That being said, the QC did the capture in half the time of the Tonex. But if you are willing to wait longer, the Tonex gives very real amp tones. However, I still choose the QC because it also includes all the other time based effects that the Tonex can’t do. So the QC is a better all in one.
