This has been my experience as well. My main focus is sim racing. Prior to the Quest 3, the only VR headset I own is the original HTC Vive. I was really reluctant to purchase the Quest 3, because even if the lenses were much better, I wasn't convinced that a link cable or VD would be able to produce the image quality and fluidity that I get from my Vive's HDMI port (noticeable artifacts and compression were not an acceptable option to me). Sure my Vive was very fluid, but had really bad screen door, blur, and aliasing (due to the low resolution). Watching videos on KZbin by people giving their experiences made it really difficult to decide, since there are so many factors at play as to why some would say it was terrible and others would say it was great (CPU, GPU, Router, etc). I'm happy to say I took a shot with the Quest 3 (with full expectation of returning it) and it exceeded my expectations. I personally don't see a good reason for myself to use it wirelessly for sim racing, but I was pleasantly surprised how well Virtual Desktop worked. That said, I'm sticking with the wire for the battery life and stability of a wired connection (I have a wifi 6 router, but not 6E and am using an Orbi RB750 mesh network. I'm using a 5900X, 4090, 32GB.

I use a pico 4 and run it wirelessly with virtual desktop but plug it in to a power adapter next to my seat for infinite battery. That way I don't have to use a thick link cable but just a regular USB-C charge cable, which is much lighter and I don't feel any tug at all. Virtual Desktop is also really simple to use. I just keep virtual desktop running in sleep mode on the VR headset, so I just need to put my VR headset on, and it will automatically connect to my PC. I'm also not even using Wi-Fi 6. Just a 5GHz router in the same room with no other devices connected to the 5Ghz band and I didn't have connection issues once.

Link cable drain for me was from 100% to 77% battery, constant usage in the rig from my PC's dedicated USB C for VR port, a total of five hours. Just 23% battery loss plugged straight into via link cable. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for these Quest 3 sim racing comparison and feedback videos. Very useful.

3 hours of Quest 3 PCVR linked w/ the official Oculus cord brought my headset from 100% to 84% I don’t think it would be physically possible for me to keep it on long enough for it to drain all the way to 0% Can’t speak for anyone else of course as there’s a lot of variables I’m sure but it’s a non problem for me. Most people who complain about screen door btw have no idea what they’re talking about. For alot of people if you’re able to see it, then that immediately means it’s bad which is wildly untrue. For a $500 headset the screen door effect is an improvement on the Quest 2 and then Quest 2’s screen door, or lack of one without looking for it, was really impressive. I have to actually force my eyes to look for it and even when I see it it’s so tiny that it’s easy for me to lose focus of it. In reality when playing games or watching movies it’s basically invisible. Unless you’re coming from a Pimax crystal or something it’s an improvement over most headsets already on the market. In comparison when I use the CV1 it’s hard not to notice the screen door effect, not to mention how claustrophobic the CV1’s FOV is. The Q3’s FOV isn’t much better than Q2 but that little bump sure goes a long way especially when I’m immersed in a game.

Regarding battery use. I spent around 110 mins in the headset whilst SIM racing with probably 90 mins actually going around the track in that time, be it quali or racing. I used the official quest link cable and have it attached to a pci-e usb-c card on my pc. (I specifically purchased the usb-c pci-express card for linking) My battery was full at the start and was on 91% when I finished.

Guys, please use the link cable and crank the encode bitrate up to 960mpbs in the oculus debug Tool. You will be blown away how sharp it can be and how close the picture is to native display port headsets. It should not have any performance impact as it is just the amount of data pushed through your link cable. I mean i saw your bitrate of ca. 100mps in VD in your video ^^ so if you did not try 960mbps via link, you will think you have a different headset afterwards ;)

I probably won't be able to push the graphic and FPS as fast as you can. i have a RTX-3080TI for my GPU and should be adequate for me. Plan to try the link cable connections but I shall see how this kind of VR headset works. Thanks for your great video. Take care.

The reason everything is fuzzy or blurry in the outside of your center view is a setting to save on CPU/GPU usage. You can turn that off on other head sets. It doesn’t have anything to do with the lenses.
@AKCobra1120Ай бұрын
Yeah this pretty much sums it up I think. Try WiFi 6e if you want to stay wireless and shave a little off your latency. Even running VD at 500 mbs my network latency hovers around 5-6. I upgraded from WiFi 6, and 6e is noticeably better in latency, clarity (due to being able to run VD at 500 mbs), and smoothness. Absolutely must be line of site though, 6e sucks at going through walls.

I have a quest 2, and I run AC and ACC at 90hz and default resolution on the oculus pc app. And I get well over 100fps maxed out detail at 4k, and around 150-200fps when not in vr mode. since those racing Sims your running aren't very demanding that's why vr racing runs smooth.. now VR gaming in BeamNG is quite demanding...one thing I wish if the quest 3 had OLED lens instead Ryzen 5800x Rtx 3090 ftw3 ultra 32gb ddr4 3600 4TB Gen4 m.2

As for the Quest 3 performing better than the Quest 2 (and Pico 4 for that matter) is the new XR2 Gen2 chip, it's quite a bit more powerful than the Gen 1 of the Q2 and Pico 4. For better battery life, set refresh rate to 90hz, mine defaulted to 120hz, turn off Passthrough, turn off hand tracking and Bluetooth, this will make your battery last considerably longer. I use mine with a BoBoVR M2 converted to a M3 with the conversion kit, it makes the Quest 3 quite comfortable and with the BoBoVR batteries with the above features turned off, the external battery will actually charge the Q3 as I use it. (BoBoVR battery specs are 2.6 amps). I've only tried the Q3 with AC and it's so much better than the Q2 and Pico 4 due to next to no visual compression, the Q3 is borderline as good visually as the Reverb G2v2 with edge to edge clarity and bigger FOV than the G2.
@JasonStorm Жыл бұрын
I am running 90hz in this video. But thanks for the other tips, I’ll give it a shot. Good to hear it’s better than the reverb G2 v2 , I have been debating buying one to try but now I have this I don’t feel the need to.

@jackr.749 Жыл бұрын
@@NuttyTY0 Not at all, especially the G2, it's still better than the Quest 3 but not by all that much visually but the G2 has really good audio, the Q3 doesn't unless you mod it. For myself, I use my G2 mostly for sim racing where it's nice to see things in the distance clearly. Also don't forget, the Q3 will use more system resources than the G2, the Q3 GPU wise still has to render the graphics and also compress them, the G2 just does the render part. With AC, the Q3 runs really well, with AMS2, it was a juttery mess using VD, I didn't spend any time trying to get AMS2 to run better however.

The way I understood virtual desktop's scaling to work was, if set at 100%, it's supersampling it enough to meet the max resolution of the headset. That's why at 100% it shows a higher resolution than your headset's native resolution. Going above that, or to 150% in your case, provides little to no benefit while being much harder to run. Maybe it's different with quest 3, but beyond 100% I couldn't tell a difference with my Q2, G2, Index, Rift S (Rift S or Q2 through oculus I had to set SS at around 130%, with VD 100% because it would bump it up for me)

From memory similar to VR high setting with increased resolution scale to 100 instead of 80 and slightly higher pixel density also but depending on your PC, those settings may not work, but higher the resolution scale and pixel density the more frames you’ll drop if your PC can’t keep up, I normally have MSI afterburner open and logging FPS amount other things to see when it lowers off 90fps, and adjust higher or lower depending on results
