Best video EVER on tennis elbow. You didn't spend 6 minutes explaining what tennis elbow is ...thank you. We wouldn't be looking at the video in the first place if we didn't realize we had it. We just want exercise solutions. You cut right to the chase and got to the heart of the matter with several superb exercises and all were very well explained. You must be an amazing doctor. Well done

Doctor, thank you so much for your videos! I’m only 40 and 3 years ago as a golfer tennis elbow hit… I thought I was done. It was so hard to think a game I loved I was done with. Been doing your exercises, bought a flexbar, and today I played 18 with minimal pain at all. This game means the world to mean, and to know my swings arnt quite done means the world to me. Thank you

I just want to say thank you, Dr. Jason, for this tutorial. I am 50 yrs old & was a competitive tennis player all my life and got out of it for years until recently. After hitting with a good player in October, I completely hurt my elbow and am still recovering. I’m committed to doing your exercises with the Theraband & weights for healing & hopefully will be on the mend soon. I got my particular questions answered through the thread, thank you so much again. 🤗

I’ve had tennis elbow that started just from the elbow down and has progressed to my shoulder. I’ve had this for 8 months. Physical therapy temporarily helped, but I sleep weird so it keeps aggravating it. I start out sleeping with my arms in a neutral position just to wake up with them bent. It’s so frustrating this won’t go away. I bought the theraband. Crossing fingers . This will help!

Great suggestion! It's so patient dependent that I try to stay away from that. I typically tell my patients to do exercises daily and go until fatigue but not a significant increase in pain (pain shouldn't increase more than 3 points on a 0-10 scale.) As far as progression it comes down to using more resistance and adding more complex exercises!

Nice video. I have the flexbar and I've been trying to do the Tyler Twist exercise for about a week now because of my mild tennis elbow pain. I've followed every online video to make sure I'm doing every step completely right, and yet I still don't think I'm doing it successfully. I hardly feel my forearm muscles working at all when I release the twist, and if anything, I feel like my wrists are the ones doing the work. Everyone says the exercise is super helpful, so I feel like I must be doing something wrong. I have the red one, so does this just mean it's too easy? Or should you still feel your forearm working? Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on your strength, it may not be enough resistance. Poor wrist range of motion may play into it too, I'm not sure because I've not seen your specific case. Trying eccentric wrist extensions with a band or light weight may be more helpful if you find you can do them more effectively! Thanks for watching!

How often should I do this? Should I wait 48 hours? The concept of waiting for 48 hours to let a muscle recover and build up is somehow conflicting with the advise to train every day or several times per day. Is there a difference between a regular large muscle group workout when your healthy versus a rehab workout when I have a critical condition? In normal workout routines experts advise to give it a leg day, then wait a day before targeting that same muscle groups again. Thanks for your expertise!

@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab

This is not terribly uncommon. I would suspect it may be due to physiological mechanisms that "block" the pain during activity. Similar to other overuse injuries, people don't feel them until after their athletic activity.

Good evening. From your clinical experience you believe that in tendinopathies a combination of concentric and eccentric exercises should be done or you work devotionally with eccentric loading of the muscle and the tendon?
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the individual case and where they are in the body. I typically start patients with isometric exercises or eccentric exercises, depending on their case, and then progressively load and move into concentric exercises as they improve! Tendinopathies are definitely challenging and many providers still use the term tendonitis even when the complaint has lasted for years. We know now, from research, that the development of the injury is more than just chronic inflammation in the tendon! Thanks for watching!

I recently got a bad case of golfers elbow, and on your advice I bought the green flexbar. It's helping a lot but I'm not sure how hard I'm supposed to grip it. I'm surprised at how stiff the green one is, and I have to grip it pretty hard to get it to twist. When I do grip it hard, and put it through the motions, my elbow sometimes hurts immediately afterward, but several hours later is nearly pain free, Is this actually normal? Maybe I've been doing it the right way all along? Is it supposed to hurt afterwards a little when you're doing it right? Thanks for your videos!

Sometimes rehab will cause some post-rehab pain increase. I typically tell my patients that they should do their exercises but modify to keep the pain from increasing 3 points on a scale from 0-10, 10 being the worst. There's a fine line there. Glad to hear it's helped you some though!

I whacked that tendon falling off an MTB a couple days ago which has produced all classic Tennis Elbow symptoms (I've also had it before in my other arm so I know what it feels like). These exercises are fairly painful for me using the red Thera-Band and a 1KG dumbell. usually fit and healthy 41yr old male. The pain has been pretty intense for the past couple of days which I guess is because I've brought on Tennis Elbow via sudden trauma to the tendon, should I continue with the exercises or wait until doing them causes me less pain? Or should I buy a lighter yellow Thera-Band?

If that presentation walked into my office I would suspect a contusion or neuritis d/t acute injury and probably treat it with manual therapy and some isometric exercises and stretches initially. Just my opinion, but I can't give you any specific advise since you're not a patient. It's always a good idea to see a chiro/PT/MD and get a professional opinion. With the supination and pronation exercises, what will be the difference if we perform it with a straight arm compared to bent arm? I remember when I did elite gymnastics they would make us do it with a straight arm for rehab before our warm up for training.

Since both the supinator and pronator muscles of the forearm cross the elbow, using a straight arm may give a slightly different effect from the exercises.

I typically tell me patients it shouldn't increase pain more than 3 points on a 0-10 pain scale. Typically, if a patient has fairly normal muscle strength in the wrist/hand extensors I will start them on eccentrics at the beginning and have rep them out to fatigue or tolerance, as long as it's not causing an increase of more than 3 points in the pain scale. If there's noticeable weakness and the pain is really severe, then I typically start them with isometrics (muscle contraction without joint movement) until they can tolerate eccentrics. Most people can tolerate eccentrics right away, but if it's post surgical or a significant tear/rupture then they may not. Ultrasound may help sometimes, but isn't going to get the issue to resolve completely. *Remember all physio and chiro are not created equal* , so if you go to another chiro or physio you may get a better experience. Best of luck in your recovery!

It can help prevent tennis elbow because the exercises help build the capacity of the tendon to transfer energy and improve the endurance of the forearm muscles. The Flexbar is the best because you can effectively do isometric, eccentric, and isometric contraction in a more natural grip with a more even load distribution. After that I'd say bands, dumbbells, then kettlebells.

Hi Jason, great video. A couple of questions. 1. How is tennis elbow developed? I do a lot of computer work which I have read can cause it, but it is necessary for my job. But my colleagues do the same amount of hours and do not have tennis elbow. Is there a proper desk setup that can help? My right arm (which I use to control the mouse) is what is affected. 2. I bought the Theraband Bar like you suggested and have been doing the exercises. How long do you do them before tennis elbow should subside somewhat? What frequency do you recommend doing the Tyler Twists?
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab 3 жыл бұрын
Tennis elbow is an overuse injury from repetitive micro trauma, typically. Not everyone is going to get it doing the same actions, your unique physiology and lifestyle are factors that play into it. I typically suggest having your arms at your side and at 90 degrees when at the computer. Sometimes a different mouse (vertical mouse) or keyboard can help. I can't give you specific guidance on when your elbow pain will improve with the Flexbar exercises since it's unique to everyone and some people require more treatment than solely home exercises. I always recommending seeing a chiro or PT if your condition isn't improving sufficiently. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery!

I'm sorry to hear that. From my experience steroid injections can help relieve it for a period of time but it will sometimes return after the drug is metabolized by the body and if the insult is still present. I can't give you a time frame, I usually treat the patient in my office while they're doing exercises so it's a more comprehensive treatment. I always suggest seeing a chiropractor who's familiar with treating these injuries, or possibly a PT. These exercises are important but not always enough, in themselves, to get you over the injury completely. Best of luck with your recovery!
