I have owned two Dodge Calibers w/CVT and absolutely love these transmissions. They are a very safisticated and mis-understood piece of technology. I wouldn't use these trans missions in a high performance application but as far as I'm concerned for the daily driver looking for economy with a little bit of care and propper maint schedule I've gotten plenty of mi out of them both. My 2009 was sold with 185k mi and my current 2008 has 175k mi and works great. This video was nice to see how they work and the actual what there made of. Again the proper application of this trans it is a marvel to me to see what it is made of. Ty

Hi. Fantastically informative. Thank you. I am in Australia and we have a 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport with CVT. Car has had a young mother and our grand daughter, a novice (but very careful) female as owners of this car from new. Car has only 80K Kilometres on the clock. Within 12 months of our girl getting the car the CVT started slipping and got to the point where it is undriveable. We took it to the Suzuki dealer for diagnosis and quote and the only thing they would contemplate was replacement with a new transmission at a cost of a little over $9K AUD. They refused, or could not give details why the transmission had failed. The car is in beautiful condition but is not worth that much. Other transmission specialists were contacted and all reports were very negative. We were told that these transmission are "Throw away", cannot be repaired, and that the parts are not available anyway. So now we have a nice bright yellow monument sitting on the back lawn. I am an experienced mechanic and your video has given me the incentive to have a shot at repairing it myself. But if the parts I need are not available or prohibitively expensive, I would be wasting my time. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you. Gert Roewer, Jindera NSW Australia.
@siuautomotive3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video. 5-7 years ago many shops had the same attitude about rebuilding cvts here in the states. Now many shops are rebuilding these because there are so many out there. I guess in your situation, you’d want to do research to see about parts availability. You might find out how much it would cost to have parts sent from the us to you. Slauson.com has a ton of good used belts and pulleys. The transgo drop in flow control valve is a good product and I’m sure it’s available through parts suppliers worldwide. When you pull it apart, the pulleys might look bad if the belt was slipping, but it’s likely build up and the material will probably clean up. I wrote an article for gearsmagazine.com for their January issue. You can read the magazine online and that issue includes a buyers guide. Download that mag and learn more about the cvt and check out some of the suppliers. You might find what you need!

@@gertroewer152 no mine hasn't failed, its shuddering on deceleration and sometimes won't up shift if revving around 3-4k rpm, i can also feel what seems to be a slight slip. I think the last person to service the transmission has used the wrong oil type(pink color) I have been sourcing service parts for it from the dealer, all coming from over east or Japan. This sort of explains why the CVT in this has a bad reputation, I think people don't service them or if they do, they dont use oem spec stuff as it's hard to source them locally, also pricey. From what I've gathered, it's very easy to damage with the wrong fluid and recommended is the expensive Suzuki green fluid. I did a drain and fill over the weekend with correct fluid but not much change. I intend on getting a full drain and fill as fluid is still coming up pink when new fluid is green. There is also an external filter which according to suzuki is not a serviceable item, wrong! I had a look at mine and that thing was is extremely dirty for a filter(100k km on car). I have called a number of wreckers around and this transmission is known for its scarcity and quick sell, so even when they have them, they sell them for close to 4k because of this. There's a specialist in NZ that reconditions them and sells them worldwide including Aus. He also supplies parts/guidance to guys that rebuild them here. He wants ~$3,400(2,800 + 600shipping) excluding GST.

Sean - the no#1 issue with these trannies is wear in the flow control valve in the pump, and the bore can get worn too. This can lead to low pressure and damage to the pulley assemblies. The aftermarket has a fix for this.

Great video explaining and showing how these work, my daughters Mitsubishi CVT just died, I suspect pump or seal, went from working fine to the very next morning a loud whine and low pressure code. As mentioned in other comments the lack of parts to do a full rebuild is what is most scarey in owning one of these, and even more scarce is a new one at a reasonable cost. Feels like 150k is about it. If I owned a lift and unlimited time I would go ahead and pull it out just to do it but sadly not many people do. It seems there is a huge niche for a shop that just does these transmissions and ships them back but I suspect the lack of parts is keeping this from happening.

Great, thank you! One question: this wasn't shown in the video, but you obviously took this piece of welding wire (holding the ratio control valve link) out before putting the pan back on? And what happens if you miss this step, do not put anything in that hole? The linkage can fall apart when assembling? And what does it result in, car would not move, or just not shift? Because I have a strong suspicion that the shop which replaced the solenoids on my valve body forgot or didn't know about this step. Thank you!

@siuautomotive3 жыл бұрын
The main reason people say don’t change the oil on high mileage transmissions is because the new fluid has great detergents that will break loose varnish and gunk and potentially hang up some valves. Varnish doesn’t really build up in transmissions like they used to, so it really shouldn’t make a difference. If your fluid is really dark though, you might be taking a risk.
