It was dark, I had my boy on a leash, and this massive dog came tearing at us like greased lightning. Iknew running would be stupid, especially since I had nowhere to go besides the porch where he could've caught me pretty easy, so I hefted my boy up with one arm (not smart since he's almost 40lbs and I threw my shoulder out) and started waving my free hand around and yelling at the dog. Got him to back down long enough for his owner to come grab him. Running from a strange dog is a bad idea. They're gonna be faster than you.

My grandmas german shepard though...kind to family and friends but will hunt deer and sheep if left without supervision. He is a trained dog who went to school for 4 years and still has some incredibly strong instincts. Good guard dog though.

Until the one day strangers pulled up into our drive , which was in the middle of the woods. His hair went up on his back and he became fierce. I swear it was because he sensed my apprehension.

Growing up, our German Shepherd was totally fine when the mailman stopped to talk to my dad... That is, until he reached into his mailbag. He instantly froze. Dog suddenly, gently, held his hand, not biting - yet. Just looked at my Dad like, "THIS is the MFer who rattles the mail slot EVERY day. Want him gone?" Not a scratch on the poor mailman, but he was pretty shook up. Amazing instincts and intelligence to analyze and act to protect.

The dog had never done anything remotely like that before, just barked sometimes at the mail slot banging open and shut. But he KNEW this was the guy who did it. German Shepherd's are incredibly intelligent and he recognized this guy's scent, but he also knew he wasn't supposed to bite people. The dog was smart enough to walk the razor's edge between protecting his people and not biting.

I've heard stories of German Shepards just waiting, hiding in the dark quietly while a robber enters a home. The dog will wait until the intruder is fully inside and then attack. While most dogs would just bark as soon as theres a sound, a Shepard will give the would be burglar a false sense of security before ripping him apart. Incredible dogs.

My friend German Shepherd was feeling me out and when I was hanging with him and when he determined I was friend, the dog's reaction was funny, the dog was like "I have determined that you are friend, I would like to receive pets from you now and I shall also protect you as member of the pack." Several years ago, my daughter and great niece were out playing close to dusk. My wife called them in, and our GSD took off. About twenty minutes later, we heard him on the front porch. When I opened the door, the first thing that I saw was that his mouth was bloody. Upon further examination, his feet were bloody too, so we rushed him to the veterinarian hospital. On the way, I noticed that he had punctures on his feet, and thought that he may have gotten into barbed wire on the property. At the vet's they thought that he had been hit by a car, but I thought that unlikely. We had to leave him overnight for surgery & other treatments. On the way home, I looked down at my own hands and saw the recent bite scar that he had given me when I had tried giving him a bath. I realized that the bite that he had given me was identical to his injuries. It was at that point I realized that he had done his job and gone after Coyotes in order to protect my daughter & great niece. So in the end, he wound up losing a toe due to the damage done to it, fighting Coyotes, and he'll be 11 next month.

This is exactly what i imagine a German shepard would do. My family and I had a house break in once. We were attacked and we fought back. My brother’s hands are permanently disabled because he stopped a machete bare handed. I have a mini horn on my forehead because of the slash i got. The police brought a German Shepard to inspect our house and the scene. The inspector reassured us and said “She knows where to find him don’t worry”. They caught a guy after 2 weeks and well, the damn attacker was in the ID parade i recognized him. When I was little, my grandparents owned a German Shepherd. He was very patient with young children. When my grandparents went on camping with me, they knew they can go through their day without fearing that I might get kidnapped. The dog was by my side all the time and the first stranger to touch me would find out very quickly what happens when a German Shepherd is triggered. He would be best buddies with all the grandchildren, but very protective. A very good boy!

Have to tell the story of my moms german shepherd! When she was in her 20s, she had a german shepherd that was WELL TRAINED, like police training style. One day mom was at work and these 2 guys got in to her apartment. Her dog let them in happily BUT when they tried to leave he didn't let them. He was a big dog and cornered them (not in the US so no guns also in like 70s). My mom came home to 2 men yelling "Take this cracy ass dog off us" They got aressted and he got a walk and treat. She told this story so many times during my childhood. Wished I meet the dog haha

When my sister was a little girl in Germany many years ago after the war, my dad would send their GSD to get her when she was playing. Everyone knew everyone in their small town, and Benno would literally grab her by the sleeve and bring her home. My parents never had to worry about her when she was with Benno. He was incredibly loyal and a wonderful guard dog. On the other hand, my golden retriever would show him all the valuables and go home with the robber. ❤😂

When I was a toddler, my grandfather had a German shepherd. Once, he was robbed by a gypsie. The dog let him in, and made sure he couldn't leave. Everytime the robber was tryng to get out, the dog would bite his jacket. My grand-father found the gypsie crying on the doorstep, menacing to press charge because the dog tear his leather jacket appart (it was in the 80's in France, any gypsie talking about suing you was obviously ridiculous because the cops wouldn't take the complaint). My grandfather just told him: "I'd like to let you go, but my dog doesn't agree". The gypsy left with his jacket completely torn off and they never heard about him again. That dog named Flica was my absolute best buddy when I was 4yo: I gave her some yogurt at dessert, and she would growl at my mother when she was trying to spank me.

My dad always told this story about the all-black German shepherd that they had when he was a kid. The whole family went out to a matinee for a few hours, and when they got home the dog was in the front yard, standing on a man’s chest and growling with his muzzle just inches from the man’s face. My GS was trained for silence and stealth. He would silently stare people down. He looked very intimidating. Half the time, he was just thinking, "Duhhhhhhhh....." and waiting for a command. Otherwise, he displayed an extraordinary amount of strategy and tactical skill. He was an absolutely excellent dog. People were terrified of him, but he was just a big, brilliant nerd.

As a German Shorthaired Pointer with many German Shepard friends I have to agree. We GSP’s are (in my experience) not so different. We’ll point and stare, give a chance to leave without chasing you, however, we’ll most likely jumpscare you by first pretending to run towards you. And may the odds be ever in your favor if you decide not to leave. (How my Goodest girl scared off a group off walnuts one night).

I had a German Shepherd growing up. Great family dog, and she let me nap on her chest when I was a little kid. Anytime it snowed and I went sledding, she'd chase me down the hill to make sure I didn't hurt myself almost like "Tiny human! Come back!!!" She only growled at one person who was going door to door asking "Are your parents home?" He noped the heck out when Minnie started growling with her teeth bared. My mom was shocked! We saw the guy a few days later on the news for attempted kidnapping. German Shepherds are the best defense system.

2 of the scariest dogs on my route are German Shepherds. They don't bark, they don't even run. They just sit down and STARE at you, daring you to cross that invisible fence line. Freaks me out more than any amount of barking and snarling. On the other hand, 2 of the nicest dogs near the end of that same route are Shepherds. One is young and bounds up to you, tail wagging away like a Golden Retriever. The other is old and saunters over when he feels like it, usually after a good stretch. Great dogs.
