Nice review, good job. I've had this game since I was a child, but it wasn't really suited then. I'm definitely going to give it another go with my friends. Also, I had a tough time tracking this review down since the game is not that popular, and typing in Java in any kind of search engine gives a million entries related to programming

Your reviews have come so far. It's really interesting to see what your vids used to look like. I'd love to see you do another review of Java in your current style. That way we could see a "before and after" ten years of experience making KZbin clips. Thank you for leaving this up for people to see. xoxox

Thanks. Yes, I've learned a lot over the years. Interesting to watch this video and think about what remains from those early videos. I think I'd already decided that a board game review should relate the game being reviewed to other similar titles that players might already know. I still do that. But pretty much everything else changed! Back then I didn't even have a tripod for my camera (phone) so the footage was shakey. I hadn't realised that the camera saps your energy, so you have to be twice as upbeat as you think you're being - I sounded so bored in those early videos and rarely smiled. Realising the value of a script was another step forward - it cuts the time in half (at least). I repeated myself a lot in early videos. But I'm still an amateur really - I'm rubbish with camera equipment / mics / lighting etc. I'm getting better at editing, but still struggle with sound levels. I'm pleased with where my videos are at right now. And I'm quite pleased that even though the early videos are poor quality and badly delivered, the information in them largely holds up well.

I think clips like this are really important for budding KZbinrs to see. Not everyone starts out as an expert, the trick is to keep making content and to keep learning and keep improving. I’ve spruiked your channel in several places since discovering you. You have a unique point of view and approach that I really like. Even if you are wrong about Colt Express. 😜

I've just picked up Mexica, the iello/super meeple reprint. It is a little simpler, with possibilities for some very cutthroat play. That version has gorgeous resin temple pieces. When you get done with the game the board looks amazing. I've also played Tikal on my iPad, and trying to burn through ten Action Points every turn gets tedious. It's great that you did this video, trying to find explanations / demonstrations of Java is actually kind of tough. I'm going to do a little more watching / reading before I decide to try it.

Very good review. I just picked up a used copy of Tikal and just discovered the Mask Trilogy. Not much information on youtube, so thank you for your video!

How is this not a thematic game? You travel thousands of miles to develop an island. Bringing civilization to an untamed wilderness. What greater theme is there?

It's a wonderful theme! But the theme is not really woven into the gameplay. This doesn't really matter to me in this case - I can enjoy the incredible gameplay it offers and just soak up the atmosphere from the visuals.
