Just bought some java fern from Aquarium Co-op and what they sold me was entirely wrapped in thread. I have not kept java fern in over 10 years and was really surprised to see this on products from them. Thankfully me just watching random videos on youtube about this plant tonight, you saved my java ferns. Thank you sir.

Just ordered some super glue gel, When it arrives in a few days I will remove the sting and glue to rock or driftwood. in the meantime. i just added the plant to the tank to float around just above the substrate

You actually saved so many of my rhizome plants; I bought the from Amazon. I've had them for almost a year and they had been doing well and then...they were melting. My single Java? Six pants. The other I don't know? Ten plants. So glad I found your video whilst figuring out what was wrong with my plants. 👏👏👏

Thanks! I bought a nice java fern from PetsFart Wednesday. I looked it over closely and, yup, little black string. Pull the string, 6 little plants. My son and I have been trying to figure out why a little java fern floating from a tank at a mom-n-pop store can do so much better than a beautiful "plant" in a tube when planted our tanks. This really disgusts me.

SO RIGHT.😉 This happened to me when I first started with Live plants. They were all dying and I have a house full of healthy plants. Couldn't figure out why? I'm a disabled senior on a very small budget. Just as I was going to resign myself back to fake ones I saw a similar video. I pulled one out to check and sure as shit there it was. Very hard to find. So I got rid of it. Only had a couple left by then but they were saved. Why they do this is stupid and rip off imo. I guess they think the quicker it dies, you'll buy more.🤔 PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION TO HIM.😏 Thxs for the video, subscribed.

Thanks for watching and for the follow! This hobby is easy for people to quit. I get it. Once you've nailed the plant part, the rest should be much easier. Check your tap water as well. If it goes through a softener. That can give you problems with plants as well. Too much sodium. 🤙

I thought I removed all the black string when I first bought my huge Java fern but after this video, I checked and saw some were still attached. I also had them buried in the sand. When I pulled them out, a foul smell was released, so the roots were definitely rotting. Thank you for this video! You saved me from totally throwing my tank out of wack! I bought this fake resin coral decoration and I’m using it like a vase in the aquarium for these. As long as they aren’t buried in the sand in that ok? The coral decoration is kind of handy as it’s holding them in place separately without using glue
@yourtap3 ай бұрын
So the roots for these ferns are like appendages. They're meant to attach themselves to other plants or objects. Like epiphytes. Their goal is to be elevated in the water column. The nutrients are absorbed through the "Rhizome" that vine the leaves are growing from the top and roots from the bottom. FYI, they'll grow on anything. Your decorations you bought are great to use. Attach with super glue (frugally).

I completely killed the first giant beautiful Java fern I bought.. guy at the store pulled the bunch out of the store tank so I assumed I just left it that way 🤷 only good part was, while the original plant started dying, it mass produced a bunch of new baby plants & they all separated themselves.. by the time I noticed my plant was just dying I had about 14 new pieces I separated & spread around the tank the way it SHOULD have been.. while the original piece died, I'll still always have Java Fern's from it

@@themightycrixus1131 that's a bummer to read, bearded dragons are fun pets. I raised one in my younger years. Used to breed Vipers as well. Those sliders may out live you bro. Lol Those are all over Texas where I'm from. 16yrs?! They must be getting big man.

@@yourtap it was sad to loose him but I rescued him from severe neglect some years ago and was honored to get my time in with him. They really are great pets and I found him in the most unexpected way. I would try a snake but I don't know how my cats would feel. 😂 I am a huge animal lover and always rescuing and rehoming critters in need. Petey was a carnival prize up in Pennsylvania and smaller than an oreo when we got him. Now he is the size of my hand! He has some miles under his belt too. Made it all the way to Charlotte, NC and even up to the Blue Ridge mountains for a few years. He has lived quite a life.

@@themightycrixus1131 thanks for sharing your stories! I really enjoy hearing about others journey with their animals. Good for you taking care of that Dragon. Snakes do find ways of getting out. Your cat definitely would be on edge constantly 🤣

Can I put it in large gravel substrate? Like marble sized stones
@forrealfifavids71442 ай бұрын
I don’t have the ability to glue them to something I’m hoping showing the root balls into larger gravel will work
@yourtap2 ай бұрын
If you don't have direct pressure on the roots and they are free to attach themselves; larger stones would be preferable unless you don't mind them connecting to piles of stones permanently. It's more of a cosmetic decision on your part. Hope that helps 🤙

Great Java Fern public service announcement. Also solved the mystery of my 1st Java Fern dying. 🕵️♂️🕵️♂️

Once java ferns get black holes and are dying, can they be saved? Or do I need to just cut those affected leaves off?
@yourtap Жыл бұрын
The leaves are going to die at that point. However, if you snip that leaf loose and let it float for a couple weeks. It'll produce little ferns directly off a loose dying leaf. It's pretty amazing. 🤙
@thanhvanvo03 Жыл бұрын
@@yourtap thank you. I think I'll have to do that. Actually mine don't have black holes yet. They looked like they did but there more progressively translucent.

It would be nice if the containers for those plants had directions on them because I myself am guilty of taking those poor leaves out of the tube and jamming them into gravel. I cringe by typing that out. I know how to deal with Java ferns now but that’s a total beginner mistake made partially by the company who grows those plants.
@yourtap Жыл бұрын
We all did it. I completely agree. Their directions don't point out what counts the most. Thanks for watching 🤙

hi my man, i have tried tthese ferns many times. I m always failing, they ll just develop baby plants but never new leafs. What must i do
@yourtap11 ай бұрын
Keep the babies. The fern they're growing off of will die. Then you'll need several years of patience because it takes that long for them to grow full size underwater. Hope that helps and unfortunately it takes longer than one would anticipate.

Well you know what, this maybe the best reply i have ever received not funny tricks that wont work but just add to my stress. Now i know that i will not have fern anytime soon in my tank so will put swords in their place till they grow . Also are they affected by high lighting? i Have a powerful light for my carpets while at the same time tryimg to grow fernz
@yourtap11 ай бұрын
@@RandB_Aquatics , when it comes to light and the plants you put in there. You will notice overtime that some will thrive and others will die. It makes things more difficult trying to juggle lighting for different plants. Try lots of plants. The one's that make it are perfect for your tank. Thanks for your questions my friend 🤙

So sad I'm a beginner and just pulled the string off my new plants last night and I picked off atleast a handful of baby rhizomes and threw them away because I didn't know better😢

Don't be hard on yourself. I've killed many of plants and animals due to mistakes. They're lessons and we are capable of learning from them. Thank you for sharing your story 🤙

Why do you recommend trimming the roots?
@yourtap8 ай бұрын
These plants aren't aquatic plants yet. They were grown in tubs and when you convert them to underwater. They lose those roots and grow new ones that have adapted to underwater growth. You're helping the process move along quicker. Hope that helps 🤙
@DeGarisJ8 ай бұрын
Oh! That's really interesting! Very useful information. Do you know if this applies to other plants that have grown out of water?
@yourtap8 ай бұрын
@@DeGarisJ , correct. Their leaves will melt off as well. Nearly the entire plant makes a complete change. The only original part will be their rhizome.
@yourtap8 ай бұрын
@@DeGarisJ also not all plants can do this and some don't like the process at all and may completely die. So don't think that you did something wrong if that happens. The process is extremely stressful for the plant.
