can someone tell me what is so great about java because to be honest i don't like it, especially the syntax and i don't see myself using it in the game industry at all yet i have to learn it in college for a game programming and simulation bachelors degree.

Its really powerful and used alot. It's a good language to learn OOP with and then move on to C++, the transition will be far easier.

I like Java but not so much. I prefer and love C. Java is quite complicated with many factories, try/catch and so on. Same, constructing Windows Desktop application without plugin for creating it is just hell. This is why I love Visual Studio IDE where in C# I can so easy create some form.
