The detail that no one seems to be noticing is how you added more pulls so each "drawer" has its own -- makes the illusion of many thin drawers that much more convincing. It really does look like an antique piece now -- the veneer looks gorgeous.
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery 4 ай бұрын
Thank you! I’ve had many people saying “too many pulls”, not realizing that if this were a REAL map cabinet, each drawer would have at LEAST one pull, and often two! So I very much appreciate the fact that you can see what I was going for here. :-)

You made a silk purse out of a sow's ear! Thanks for all your inspiration and the Woodworkers Guild. My husband died, and while I know how to use all the equipment in the shop, I know diddly squat about their maintenance needs. And little things like fixing the broken table saw height adjustment.💚💚💚

'Rog! Rabbits! There's rabbits!. Never mind the pea flakes, get through here now! Aw! You've missed them. What?! Rog! Rog! Now she's working on MDF! And she's spreading butter on it! What's going on?!' To say that Transcend is a confusing emotional rollercoaster for a certain small rodent is no exaggeration. It's why I won't let him watch any horror films fronted by hell's gatekeeper, David Attenborough. However, the appearance of wood veneer (and a few sprigs of curly-leaf parsley) restored piggie equilibrium and together we marvelled at your transformation of a fairly unprepossessing piece of hygroscopic wood substitute. Another winner.

I like the new pulls better than the original ones. You could even put labels in them (might have to loosen the screws first). Even if you don't put labels in them, the look that you could do that makes sense with that many drawers.

It’s pretty easy once you’ve been around it a short time. I also opted for these pulls so that people could add a label to each drawer if they wanted to. Might help tell them apart easier, but it’s not hard once you open and close them a few times.

Sumptuous, as usual! If I were renewing furniture pieces I would definitely take up the offer to subscribe to the woodworking forum. It sounds wonderful. This piece and others on your channel reinforce my belief in your understanding of the relationships between functional design, aesthetics, and production cost management. That, along with the fact that you are thinking of designing your own pieces, caused the Memphis Movement return to mind. Not many people have heard of it per se but would recognize the iconic pieces that came out of it. It was actually a school of industrial designers’ tongue-in-cheek rebellion against the mindless “variations on a theme” practice of putting anything and everything in a black box-VCRs, videotape cassettes, tuners, CD players, storage units for the media, radio tuners, amplifiers, stereo speakers, seating, coffee tables, lamps, desks, computers, printers, etc., ad nauseam. Memphis pieces were designed to bring playfulness and whimsy back into everyday objects in our lives (I treated myself to a neglected Richard Sapper Alessi 9091 Chrome, Brass, & Copper Whistling Teapot, which I restored to almost new condition!) I saw a number of the pieces in an exhibit in the early 1980s, I can attest that the level of craftsmanship and detail that went into designing and fabricating these required artisans who would have to have had your particular skills, talents, and expertise. For more information, check out this introduction on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Group

Wow, Angie! This is one of the coolest pieces I’ve ever seen you do. It’s very old now and high end and probably really valuable, too. I’m so impressed by the veneer that you made yourself!!! Truly, this is a grand cabinet, to fill with treasures and specimens and oddities from your travels to far-off places. This one just fires up my imagination. And that’s what a great redesign should do. Absolutely fantastic!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I notice you and many other woodworkers on KZbin use solvent based contact cement. Personally I’m a big fan of the latex based product. Unlike the solvent based cement it is not removable by applying heat. It actually bonds stronger by doing that. The open time is very similar and the fumes are a lot easier to take. I’ve had great success with 3M’s product. Nice work.

Angie, lovely work as always! As a suggestion, would mark in pencil the face you DONT want to glue. You sand after drying anyways and the pencil will come off and you wont mix up which side is which. Love the mix of dark color and wood. Jay

You do such amazing work 💖. You know those makers marks we look for when refinishing furniture? I truly believe one day it will be your mark we see. To me, once you alter a piece like you did here it should become yours. I myself have gotten into the habit of attaching a little basically 1/2 peice of an index card with key information about the refinish and month and year. I think it could help the next person doing a refinish in the future. Even if it's me in 20 years. I haven't "flipped" anything for financial gain yet, I mostly get things given to me and find others in my community in need of a piece of furniture. My ultimate goal is to do charity work like what you do for the bunnies, but I haven't found an animal oriented group in my community I want to partner with. I'm retired so I could do this. Anyway, nice work all around 😊.

Tip: The wider the saw blade on the band saw, the better the longitudinal cuts will be. The thinner the saw blade, i.e. not as wide behind the saw tooth, the easier it is to make curved cuts. But I'm not talking about the thickness of the band saw blade here, i.e. the thickness of the material, but the width.

Yes indeed. I plan to get a smaller blade for more intricate work but thankfully it came with the resaw blade already attached. :-)

Fooled me, I thought it was a map cabinet, too. That would make a great storage option for a sewing room. Patterns and tools in the top drawers, fabric in the big ones, and maybe a big enough surface to cut things out on top. It would take a big sewing room, though!

*Chef's Kiss* Bravo! Bravo! You took a 6 year old piece of MDF mass-produced furniture and made it look totally upscale. Loved the drawer pulls; They gave me library catalog cabinet vibes. Yeah, this may have been a behemoth to move and get into the shop, but WOW! What a transformation! As for the Woodworkers Guild of America: YES YES YES. Great idea! Join the guild! You already do so much with rehabbing furniture that the next logical step is to step up your woodworking skills. Go for it. It will help your business and it is always good to diversify. You never know, you may like building your own furniture... I know the bunnies would love it. :) And the kitties would, too. I can totally picture you building an awesome mission-style rocking chair. I would buy it! Love rocking chairs! Go forth and woodwork! But don't forget about your MCM roots! :) Loved the video, the production value on this one is great. So is the music choice. Cheers to you and Andrea! Great cameo of Freya and Señor Nacho, too.
