I had a cat adopt me in 2019 and we both were happy with him being the only child. Then COVID set in and I wasn't having people come over like I used to. By mid 2021 I started to notice a change in him. I work 10 - 12 hour days but always made time for cuddles, play, relax etc. I always leave the TV on for noise and something to watch. But I noticed it wasn't enough as he became lethargic and showing signs of depression and I decided to get a kitten. I came across a woman who does fostering for a rescue group who had a foster that just gave birth to 5 kittens. When they were of age I was going to adopt one until she told me momma needed a home and asked if I knew anyone. After thinking about it and seeing momma so sad, defeated and scared and at 8 years old estimated she had a rough life. I decided to adopt momma instead. It was exactly what both needed and in a short time they both came to life. Today, 16 months later, the 2 cats are inseparable and it's such a joy to see them playing, relaxing and being each others best friend as well as mine. 2nd cat was the best decision. 😊❤ I give them about an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening for KZbin cat games but I also play with my cats and I really have to be sure to give equal attention to both to avoid jealousy. If my girl cat gets too much attention but wont move so he can get attention then he sits on her until she moves 😅.

@@xkirax2997 same, been about 8-10 months. It's better now than it was before. Also she was here first (for about 4 months) and is deaf. both of them are roughly the same age and both street cats I took in. Before she would scream blue murder even if he was in the same room. Now she only hisses at him when he comes too near but she will go sniff his butt whenever she feels like it. One thing I think may have helped is feeding them together. One bowl of food either side of me and let them eat facing each other. Slowly over time the dishes come closer and you get out of the way. Also when I give them treats, it's one for her, one for him. As soon as one of them hisses or goes for the other, treat time is over. Do this a couple of times and she should get the message. Also he goes out for a few hours per day so that is just me and her time. She was here first so I guess her nose is out of joint, you need to show her she's still your girl. They might never be friends but at least they are no longer enemies. LoL. Good luck.

I do the same and my little boy ignores me while I’m leaving, but that is okay because I always tell him when I will be home. I find myself keep the time. For example, if I tell him I will be home in 2 hours I better be gone only 2 hours or he will “yell” at me when I’m late. Also, I had to be taken to emergency and was in the hospital for 10 days. We were both missing each other terribly. My daughter who James was familiar with looked after him. I was asking the medical team was there any chance of bring him in. Their answer was sorry we know both of you are missing each other but due to regulations and policies he couldn’t come in 😢🐈 When I got home we could not leave each other alone. Luckily I had to stay home while I recuperated.

I boarded my 9 year old cat during a cross country trip in our RV. At one point in the trip, we met friends for a 5 day cruise, so we arranged with a lovely kennel in a quiet wooded area. The dog did just fine out with the other dogs. The cat was inside, in a multi-level cat cage, window overlooking bird feeder, behind the intake counter. It looked like a great place for him to get attention and be watched carefully. After the 5 days, we picked the pets up, but noticed as we continued on the trip, the cat not eating. Or drinking. Or doing anything in the litter box. A check with the boarding facility and they swore up and down that he had been just fine while with them. Hmmm. After a few days, we stopped longer at a place to get off the road and try to get the cat back in his food and water, litterbox routine. Then to an emergency vet for injection of fluids. We continued the trip, and he still was not doing anything, not even barfing on curvy highways. Second emergency vet, no obstructions found in Xrays, more hydration injected. We cut the trip short, headed for home 2 days away. Finally he began taking water, food followed a day later. He didn't poop until the 7th day after getting him back. No more boarding, ever again for this one!

I agree. I boarded my cat at the vet for 5 days once and they called me 2 days in saying she hadn’t urinated and they said they needed to scan her for kidney stones. Sooo I paid $400 for that and they swore she had them, gave her medication but after a week being home she was fine. I’m never doing that again. I feel like every time I bring her to the vet they wanna run all these tests and inject her with medication that costs me a fortune meanwhile she’s a healthy, happy, normal, cat. Cats imo do not do well in sudden changes in their environment, especially when that means being locked in a cage for a majority of the day.

When my friend came in the door the cat immediately changed back to herself and was very glad to see him. I explained what happened and suggested it would be better for the cat to stay home and have a sitter look in on her daily.

I tell him a few times before leaving, where I am going to, what time I am going to be home etc. I reassure him I am not abandoning him, & I am coming home. He is such a good sincere companion to me. When I return, I make a huge thing of it, cuddles and more talking. He is so clever and so loved. Had him during Covid lock downs at 12 weeks old. He is 3 now. I am 71. I just spent a month in Italy and I took kitty with me. I used a back pack carrier and as long as he was on my back, he was quiet but when he was under the plane seat, he did meow quite a lot. If I tapped the carrier with my foot, to let him know I was still there, he was fine. I was so glad I brought him. I found a pet friendly B&B and he was ok with me being out for a few hours every day. He apparently liked it because he got more cuddly and affectionate than he had been. We Italians love cats and the whole airplane crew was going gaga over him. 😻😻😻

She was almost 24& she passed laying in the recliner with me. I'm so happy that I had jaxi cat to cuddle with after that. That's honestly when he started getting a little more cuddly. I am a cat sitter and have 3 of my own. I always leave the radio on during the day or when I am not home. I also volunteer for animal rescue and work a lot with cats we adopt out. I recommend to adopters to use a cat sitter rather than boarding. As you mentioned, they are creatures of habit and do better in their own environment. I have many clients and treat their cats as if they are my own - love, attention, litter box care, suggest fountains for water so it's always fresh and when they are gone I suggest using a radio or tell Alexa or Google to "play classical music playlist for cats" and they love it. I always recommend more than one cat as well (unless the kitty does not like other cats) and besides, cats are like potato chips - you can't have just one! BUT, I don't recommend having a "bag full" of cats! :)

Keep those kitties happy :) I'll say it again, bird feeder videos are interesting for the sounds as much as the sights and lead to napping :)

Very nice video. I had to leave my precious princess (11 years now) for 5 days! My neighbour took good care of her by doing the exact thing I did within 25 hours. The first day my cat wasn't really happy with some stranger. But day 2: "oh, okay, it seems you know the drill.". My neighbour sent me messages and photos through WhatsApp those 5 exciting days. All went well. When I came home, I was afraid she would just ignore me, but instead she jumped her face to mine and gave me a "welcome home" greet (nose bump) ♥♥

My husband and I were newly retired and wanted to travel a bit. We took a few trips every year for awhile. We boarded our cat during this time. We made sure he had the best penthouse suite. We gave alot of instructions to staff. It worked out OK for a bit. Then we noticed that we were getting calls from the boarding facility. Our cat was vomiting, he wasn't eating, he had diarrhoea and they had to take him from the vet. Once our cat came home, he recovered quickly. This happened a few more times and the last straw was when he came home and looked in very poor condition. I said, that's it...we are not going to board him again and we didn't. Never having previously owned a cat, I wish that I had understood this behaviour.

I have 3 shifts of pet sitters that our cats already know and adore. Also a “kitty cam” is indispensable for monitoring your cat(s). Getting your cat used to going places with you is worth trying. Thoughtful use if anti-anxiety meds or alternatives may be used. We need a more cat-friendly culture! Many vacation spots will allow dogs but not cats and this must change.

Needless to say i am very worried, about both of us really. I have arranged for a pet sitter to visit twice a day. and have purchased several cameras. I can speak to him through each camera and one of them will even shoot out treats. I also planned to, even before this video, have the curtains and blinds up and the windows open a little so he can get smells from the outside world. I honestly expect to cry a little when I leave because i know that I will not be back for a while and Peeve will not.

I agree, do NOT ever board your cat! I worked at a cat boarding facility for 5 years and witnessed first hand how stressed cats get. Especially during major holidays! Boarding facilities make the most money then, and they overbook the place to make up for slow times and the stress level is thru the roof at that time. When they run out of cages, they stick cats in large dog carriers! Ridiculous. Whatever you do, do NOT board your cat!

I rescued an 8-week old kitten at a shipper in Georgia. I kept my eyes open for another stray cat to rescue so that the kitten would have someone to keep her company when I wasn't around. Six months after finding my female, I found a stray male that was about four months younger. He was cold, sick, hungry and scared. By the end of the day, I had earned his trust enough that he let me near to pick him up and take with me. Both are very well loved and are bonded to me to the point where I can let them outside to explore and they'll run off and be gone all day, but when I call their names in the evening, they'll come running home to their Daddy.

I live in Australia. In *_May of 2019,_* I went to Singapore for ten days. I left my cat with a friend for those ten days. She was the only person who offered to be a cat-sitter for me. When I returned to Australia ten days later, my supposed friend refused to return the cat to me, saying that she and the cat had "bonded". It is now *_March of 2023_* and I still haven't gotten the cat back. The cat has become grossly overweight because the new 'owner' doesn't feed the cat proper portions of food - she just leaves large piles of cat biscuits lying around on the kitchen floor. She also told me that she won't pay for vet bills if the cat gets sick. She said she will give the cat back to me when it is old and needs medical help. True story. I love and care about my beautiful cat. Her name is Angel. And she's getting old now.

We both worked and took in an 8 week character kitten. He solved his loneliness by inviting the neighbours two cats in. The house was trashed, eg mats skidded down to the other end of the hall, bed littered with paw prints from multiple paws chasing each other, stuffed knocked over and often the three exhausted cats all sleeping in his kitty bed. A furry pile of arms, legs and ears. Our kitty was an indoor outdoor cat, but those two older cats would not let him pass the corner of the house. Still a long way to get to the street. We never knew what we would find when we got home, but could guarantee his food bowl was empty. They had a great friendship but neighbours moved when he was about 1 year old. The new people had cats too and they got invited in as well.

We take our cat with us when we go camping in our RV. He doesn't like riding in the car, but his scent is all over everything in our RV, so he recognizes it as another of his "territories". The routine is the same in the RV as at home, so he doesn't flip out, and instead gets very relaxed. Of course, he prefers to be at home, which is where we spend the bulk of our time, but he does okay on our vacations, too.

Fully agree. I've always wondered how some "specialists" in cats assured that cats do not suffer in the absence of owners. The fact is that my cat is under real stress when I am not at home, even if other family members are at home. She has a favorite toy, a teddy bear, as soon as I leave the house (I don’t leave for more than an hour or two), she drags this toy into the hallway, lies down next to it and starts to moan and howl until I return. This is repeated almost every time, except if she was asleep and did not hear that I had left. So all the talk that cats are indifferent to the absence of their owners is complete nonsense.

When you watch TV, they always are in very close proximity either on the floor or on your lap. Playtime too. Some kitties can take or leave toys, but that's okay, there are other ways to engage them. It's a myth that every kitty is aloof and skittish. Some are, it's true. But the majority want their humans; either parents or a regular visitor/cat-sitter they are familiar with. I have 10 cats at any one time, as my wife fosters rescue cats. There is a toy, that we absolutely Never have in our house. It's those cat toys that consist of a flexible pole with a nylon string, and weighted feathers or whatever, on the end of the string. I used to jam the handle into a drawer like a fishing pole, to let the cats play with it. They like these things very much, and it's an easy toy for cat owners to play with, for getting cats to chase the end of it around. A few years ago my cat Olly was playing with it, by himself. I was sitting in the same room fortunately, be cause I suddenly realized it had got wrapped around his neck, and the end of it spun around the nylon string. He was being choked by it. If I hadn't noticed, he would have basically hanged himself on the floor, like an animal snare. He was ok, but I BANNED those Cat Fishing Poles in the House. The same go's for any type of string left where they can get at it. Fishing gear isn't my thing, but that stuff is deadly for keeping around a cat. I wish they would Ban those toys Period. Thank you this was a nice video. I haven't gone on vacation since my parents died because I have no one to look after my two cats. When working nights, I do keep the radio on so that they can listen to light classical music ( not all classical music is comforting ) and sometimes I put on talk radio - NPR. ).

My two kittens are nearly 2 years old now but very playful. When I leave, sometimes I let the bathroom sink trickle a little fresh water. They will also play in the empty bathtub sometimes and I leave them a couple of toys to thrash around the tub. Also, if it's really warm, they seem to get a kick out of a few ice cubes instead of just water. They have more than one water dish and a few snack options, stashed around the house. Sometimes. I keep them guessing and they love an occasional mylar balloon! The string is irresistible! Once they puncture it, they celebrate their victory.🎈 🎉

I leave mine at home 2 weeks a month. When I get home I spend the first 2-3 days spending every minute with them. I have a sitter that comes and sits with them daily. I also leave the movies running the entire time I am gone. I will add a second cat box. I would never bored them. I had a cat go to Kitty Jail overnight and she was never the same again. My cats have food 24/7. I got a call a week before I was scheduled to get back. I called a friend and had him go get 2x 26 pounds of cat food. 1 thing people need to remember is, They may only be in your life s short amount of it but you are in their life their entire life. Don`t get a pet unless you are going to be their forever home. There is no excuse that is worthy of I am moving and my animal can`t go to where I am moving to. I may work 400 miles away but I make sure they have an apartment in Vegas and someone to come in daily and hang out with them.

I have 2 rescues that are almost 1 year apart to the day....1st a friend brought to me with a puncture wound in her neck after being snatched from the dogs mouth that had already killed her momma and siblings, she was 3wks old, she'll be 3yrs in July. The second one my grand daughter and I found tied up in a plastic bag and left in the sun to dies at 4 1/2wks old, she'll be 2yrs in July. We had no intension of keeping the 2nd BUT the 1st had other plans. Day 1 #1, Matilda, did NOT like the idea of another cat in the house....took less that 24hrs for her to here the baby, Rose, crying and scared and Matilda was right in the box with her. Mommy instincts kicked in and she would pack Rose around, clean her and anytime she walked away and Rose made a sound of any kind she was right back to see what the problem was.....Drove Matilda crazy when we'd take Rose to feed her. After wks of Matilda taking care of her and us worried more that once that Rose wasn't going to make it we had to keep her. Long term affects...Matilda is scared to death of any and all dogs, she even freaks and goes hides if she hears one on tv. Rose some brain damage due to lack of oxygen and vet said the only way to explain her damage was "It will be like having a moderate to severely autistic 4yr old in your home for the rest of her life" and he was EXACTLY right! The lack of oxygen also affected her growth. She is only as big as and looks like a 3-4 month old kitten. At 1yr when she had only gotten that big he did several test to make sure she did not have a genetic disorder or something. All came back neg....so she's just a little bitty thing.

with the open bags tip, please remove the handles. It’s very dangerous for the cats, as their head can get stuck in the handles, they are trying to escape and that makes things worse quickly. If you’re not around it may lead to death 😢. We were very scared about this once, luckily everything was well, as we managed to help our kitty immediately, but the vet told us that unfortunately tragic accidents happened because of bags with handles 😢

I leave my cat in the house whenever I'm away since other cats have come into my yard (while he's outside) trying to fight him. After hearing them fighting, I immediately rush outside, then bully cat runs away or off my premises. But my cat had even sustained an injury as a result of him being attacked while outdoors. So yes, my cat stays indoors whenever I'm away.

Why is your cat outside. Build your friend a catio if it's necessary, but only feral cats should be outside freely and unsupervised/protected IMHO. I'm 75 and have had many cats--this has kept my cats healthy and long-lived. ❤

@Sue White My cat adopted me, and we'd be good friends since. Since he was free when I met him, I'll always allow him his freedom whenever he chooses to venture outside. Although he usually stays close to home, other stray cats have come into our yard and they sometimes become aggressive, so I place him inside when I'll be gone a long while. But, if he should chooses to venture and never return, he'll always have that option, just as I would want to be free to choose liberty...

I had two cats who were born and lived outdoors in a colony. When I had to move them indoors they looked out the window all the time until I made a cat door for them. Now the one I have left just lives to go out and run around the yard. It took me a year to figure it out and sadly one stopped eating and died before I realized the problem was real.

I think the time that a cat can be left alone depends a lot on their age. Kittens and young ones need more attention and care - I used to take my 2 cats with me when going away for the weekend (to my parents' place). As they got older (over 1 year old), since they were on such a good terms, I could leave them home for a weekend (leaving on Saturday morning and returning on Sunday afternoon). Dry food was always out for them (they never overate and never got overweight), with treats balls and many toys. Lucky enough I found really good friends living in the neighborhood who now look after them when I'm traveling abroad for a longer period of time - and in return I look after their pets while they travel. We leave emergency vet contacts along with money if anything happens. So far this worked as a charm for me. I prefer this over boarding them - they are old by now and they don't like leaving their home at all.

This is not true, my cats have always become more needy and want more attention and cuddles the older they are. Its not right to leave cats alone over a weekend, definitely have someone come over to check on them - that's just the responsible thing to do.

@@Butterfly11182 That's about your cats. Every cat is different and every cat and owner relationship is different. I know my cats, thank you. Fiona will be 20 in April, so I know her well. Yes, when she is awake, she seeks my company but since she is asleep the majority of the day, it's a limited time. My other cat is recently adopted, she is your typical wallflower cat - hiding all the time. Yes, she opened up to me and she comes to me when SHE needs it (not forcing myself on her), but it's still rare. Fiona is super balanced and healthy, she is super fine with the way we are living. I don't leave them alone for a weekend frequently - just once or twice a year. For longer holidays - as I mentioned - I have friends coming over. Thank you for your concern, but this perfectly works for US.

We made the mistake of boarding our two kitties when we went to the coast for a few days and I will never do it again. The kennel was run by their vet which was next door so I thought it was a good place. I was miserable without them and cried when we left and when I picked them up they were squeezed into such a tiny cage that I was livid. I’m glad they forgave me and I promised to never leave them again and I never will. We also don’t leave them at night.

I have separation anxiety when I'm away from my Copper Fox. I've been working I recently rescued a calico kitten left abandoned at the grocery store. It was on 9/11. It took 3 hours to gain her trust even after feeding her . I went and got catnip and she finally came out. Copper wanted to kill Iris . She was persistent on being loved by Copper. And after separation while I was working for a Week they adore each other.

Hahaha. Many things sound so different to my cat. As soon as he got used to my work scedule, he just used the time for 24 of his 36 daily naps. I bought him a compfy bed, toys toys toys, an automatic feeder to feed him even if I get late home, and the only thing he prefered was to sleep in a box😂. Everything untouched. I left him a fully loaded tablet with his favourite series next to his box. Hardcore Pawn. He loved that series and liked to lie down and simply look into the screen. And before going to bed, we cuddled every night while watching an episode of south park. Both of us staring into the screen like morons. But as soon as the credits rolled, he stood up and went to his bed. He never slept with me, but he liked to wake me up in the morning to demand food😂😂😂😂😂

Yea I’ll never board my cat ever again. Did that once for 5 days at the vet and they called me 2 days in saying she wasn’t urinating and thought she had kidney stones. I paid the $400 for them to scan her and they gave me medication but she was fine after being home for a few days. I could tell she was miserable after I picked her up from the boarding. Never, ever doing that again.

I appreciate the information but I think that we need to know our cats and then do what we think works. I adopted two two-year-old cats that lived to the age of 18 and 19. Unfortunately one passed in 2021 and the other in 2022. The times I traveled from Friday until Sunday I would leave extra litter boxes and a large auto feeder and water dispenser. They were fine. Longer than that I would have someone come in every day to scoop the box and spend some time with them. I tried placing them in extended cat care when I was traveling outside of the country. That did not go well at all and I had to hustle to find a cat sitter. In January I adopted two junior cats and have not left them overnight yet. But I do leave them for about nine hours a day so that I can work. Fortunately, I am able to work virtually a couple of times a week at which time they are pains in the butt. lol ;) When I travel again I will have someone come in to take care of them. They are still skittish (feral beginnings) so I will wait.

My family thinks I’m crazy when I express my cats emotional needs. They all are dog people and are very good pets parents but think cats behavior is the same. When I let them know about the vet saying my cat is Highly emotionally damaged they think she was just afraid. Not so. Being a feral rescue from The streets of Miami and being captured and driven up to New Hampshire where I found her in a animal shelter to adopt and I’ve had lots of cats in the past, who have passed from cancer last year, but she is the most terrified Kitty I’ve ever seen. it’s taken 14 months so far and I still can’t pick her up but she’s turning into a sweet loving fur baby. I can’t leave her alone for more than 6 hours and I stick strictly to her schedule and they just don’t understand. so thank you for sharing this for people out there that think cats are like other pets, or like a dog because they’re not

Youre so nice. But can you consider humanely trapping them, or just taking them, into a spay neuter program? Many are low cost You really need to fix them and adopt out the friendly ones, to indoor homes. A shelter might take some. They will keep multiplying. Best of luck. And thank you. I'm a vet asst. Try feeding canned food too. It's healthier than dry. Especially for male cats, who can get urinary l cage from too much dry food. Yes, make sure they always have fresh water. Kittens can't eat dry food yet, the kibble is too big for them to swallow. ❤keep on doing what you're doing! Do a Google search in your area for a spay clinic

She's fitting un beautifu)y with the rest of the girls except for one girl who prefers to do her own thing. My older girls are between 12 and 16 yrs old. Three of them are mothering the kitten, the others play with her but don't mother her. All get cuddle time and play time with me, plenty of clean litter boxes, dry food all day and wet food for dinner, toys, and two cat trees. All are house cats although 3 of them were strays.
