As responsible cat owners, there is a long list of things that we do for our cats to keep them happy, healthy and engaged. But, did you know there are many things your feline friend does for you every day?
In this video, we will talk about 16 things that your cat is doing for you.
They protect you when you sleep
Many cats are well aware that they, and their humans, are vulnerable when sleeping.
Sticking together during sleep is a means of protection and extra security for both you and them.
Another reason that cats like to sleep next to you is to share warmth. In the wild, animals living together often huddle to share body heat.
When your cat snuggles with you, they are seeking warmth and helping your stay warm.
Of course, cats also sleep with you to show you affection and love!
They make you more attractive
Survey findings conducted by British pet researchers have found that women were more likely to be attracted to men who like animals. Men who like cats are also more likely to be perceived by women as being nicer, more caring people.
They comfort you when you are sad
Cats can understand when their owners are sad or anxious through auditory and visual observations.
Many cats come in closer proximity when their humans are depressed. Some even purr and rub themselves more once they sense that their owner is feeling blue.
They greet you when you come home
Adult cats don't meow at each other. This means your cat has refined and kept up their meows just to communicate with you.
And the best thing is that your cat meows when they want to greet you. When you arrive home and your cat meows at you, they are simply saying Welcome Back.
They reduce your stress and anxiety
Cuddling and petting your cat produces a calm, relaxed feeling which is caused by the release of oxytocin in the brain. This feel-good chemical makes your body feel more peaceful and even helps to lower blood pressure.
This also translates to a decreased risk of heart disease. One study found that over a 10-year period, cat owners were 30 percent less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners.
They heal your wounds and strengthen your bones
Purring sound has also been long associated with a therapeutic healing ability on human bones and muscle. A cat’s purr creates vibrations at a frequency of 25-150 HZ, and studies have shown that frequencies within this range improve bone density, repair tendons, and promote healing.
They keep your pests under control
Not only will your cat hunt rodents, mice, and rats around your home, but they’re also natural insect killers. Having a cat in your home means you don’t have to worry about controlling rodents and insects in your house.
They check your cleanliness
Cats are very clean animals and they devote a large portion of their day to self-grooming. When your cat licks you, they are trying to keep you clean.
But licking also fulfill your cat’s social functions.
When your cat licks you, they leave behind their distinct scent that lets other cats know that you belong to their social group.
They care for you when you are sick
Cats and dogs have an acute sense of smell, and so have the ability to sniff out a chemical change in a human body caused by a disease.
There are anecdotal reports that cats respond to a sick individual by becoming clingier, empathetic, and more attentive.
They help you live longer
There is scientific research that suggests cat owners live longer than those without pets. This is mainly because pets alleviate tension and help us relax. They keep loneliness at bay. They even help lower our blood pressure.
They keep your kids healthy
A study in the scientific journal Pediatrics has found that children who live with cats have a lower predisposition for general illness. Additionally, those who do end up becoming sick, recover more quickly. This is because having a pet stimulates and strengthens a child’s immune system and helps better protect against bacteria and viruses.
They help you sleep better
Sleeping with cats not only reinforces the bond we have between felines and humans, it has other benefits. They can help us relax, stay warm in winter, and provide emotional security, especially for kids. This translates into a pleasant and restful sleep.
They fulfill your need for companionship.
Cats offer constant cuddles that help stave off social isolation. Cats tend to develop a special bond and can be quite affectionate with their number one human.
They bring you food
Your cat may bring you presents - like a dead mouse.
The reason why cats bring dead animals to you is because they want to share their bounty with their family. Think of it as a sign of affection and love.
They boost your immune system
Sharing a home with a cat exposes you to pet dander which stimulates your immune system to help reduce the risks of allergies and asthma. According to studies, children that grow up with pets are less likely to develop allergies to pets.

When I was in mourning 10 years ago for my late husband I would lay in bed and cry. My beautiful ginger cat would literally press her paws on my shoulders and rub her face on me while meowing, trying to comfort me. She passed last year and I miss her so much. Cats are so loving. Edit: Today is March 8th. I posted the above comment a month ago. I just wanted to thank you all for your responses, I never thought that I would receive so many heartwarming personal stories about your cat experiences as well as sympathy from all of you. If I had the time I would answer all of you, even though I know it's not necessary, it's who I am. Your love and kindness has been overwhelming, thank you all for the lovely comments back to me (cat people are definitely special). ❤

My husband died of colon cancer after a 10 yr bout. If I had to take him to the hospital to spend a few days, his cat (Valentine Needletoes) would be waiting on his chair swishing her tail as if to say, "You took him away. Bring him back." The day he died at Hospice, I wasn't sure what I could tell her. I got home and she immediately came and laid on my chest. I guess on Steve's way out, he came by and talked to her. She was the most beautiful russet marbled Bengal and when we went to Texas to get her, Steve was driving and she came over to me, stood on my thighs and checked me out. Then did the same to Steve but that was the moment she chose him and he was hers until he died, then she let me take care of her. She was whip smart. I found a saucer on a bale of hay for my horses and couldn't think of how it got there. I took it in washed it and before I knew it was back up there. Animals eat on plates. So there. Steve had bouts of runny nose due to chemo. His company encouraged him to work from home if he needed to. His chemo prevented him from being in the sun so I had clipped a 90 degree section of a holly tree for him to shelter in. He fell asleep and hadn't had Kleenex. When he awoke, she had brought used tissues and paper towels out of the burn pile and put them all around his chair. She got me sparkly cardboard from used containers and put them on my truck's windshield. What a character but she did tend us.

I talk to my cat a lot and he does not meow. But does more likexa “meh sound”… I say Hi Babe! And he says MEH… back. So, One day I was stressed out at work and I started talking to myself to let it all out and I started crying and talking and just expressing myself like if I was talking to my boss, and then he came out and started meow meow meow meow and walking in front of me and I swear it felt like he was trying to tell me things to make me feel better and he was angry at them too😂

When I had gone into septic shock, (completely unconscious) apparently my cat continuously meowed and pestered my husband until he FINALLY followed the cat to see what the fuss was about. Led him right to me. Then he said my kitty laid by my side until paramedics came. My husband knew I was sick but didn't realize I was going septic (neither did I, obviously) If it hadn't been for my kitty he wouldn't have discovered me until it was far too late. I owe my life to my cat.

I had a couple of panic attacks a few years ago, and my cat bit my leg, something she has never done before, but it allowed me to focus on that and not panic anymore. She then jumped up on my lap and pressed close to me and stayed there for hours. My cat definitely knew something was wrong, and I’m so thankful I have her.

Many years ago. I had two cats, that are now long gone. One night about 2:00 am, one of them was meowing nonstop, which was very unusual for her. I finally got up and found her in the living room, near the window, meowing her head off. I could see lights through the curtains and looked out. I lived in a duplex and my neighbors shed was in huge flames, as well as the telephone pole next to it. There were police cars and a fire truck and I’d been sleeping through it all. I really feel she thought we were in danger. It all turned out ok though.

My sister had a male cat that NEVER came voluntarily to me, although I could pick him up and make him purr. But one day, as I was cryingwhile telling how my own cat had to be "put to sleep" by the vet, my sister's cat *for the first time, ever* voluntarily came on my lap, purring, to comfort me. I felt special because of that! I loved my sister's cat so much because of that! ☺💕

When the paramedics arrived at my wife's bedside Bambu was angry and aggressive trying to protect my wife from them. I had to remove her and it wasn't easy, she faught me. Later Bambu came to comfort me as I sat alone and worried. She pushed her head hard into my head and stayed that way for about a minute, she was comforting me, exchanging vibes. Aww, how sweet. I was 12 when I got my girl. I moved out of my parents' house at age 19 and, of course, took her with me. We lived happily together for many years, but she passed away several years ago when she was 17. I was 29 then, and now I'm 34. I still dream about her, because she was like my sister. I'm thinking about getting a tattoo of her. I will always treasure the memories I have of her, and I'm so glad I took photos of her. It is very hard when they pass. I took 2 weeks off work to grieve. It's so sad they don't live as long as we do. I have since adopted 3 cats, and they did help to fill the void I felt in my heart. But time heals, and now when I think about her I smile instead of cry. I wish you and her all the best 💗

They recognize the sound of my car when I get home, follow me everywhere in the house, clean and groom me. They pick up my moods, make me laugh when I want to cry, keep me company when I'm ill, are my guardians and compagnons. Break my heart when they pass. God bless them, they ARE love.

My Dad had cancer, was in horrible pain and rarely moved. The cat sat next to him every day. When the cat was missing he would get up and look for her. It was the only exercise he would try to do. If not for the cat and her company the poor man would have been miserable. Mom told me many time she would have been lost without the cat’s help with Dad.

My family and I recently got ourselves a cat this past July. We didn’t adopt her but she chose us to be her new family instead. She just showed up on our back porch one day, lounging in the afternoon sun. We checked around and apparently she was a stray/feral cat with no owners. She was incredibly social, rubbing up against me meowing often and she’d even get up on her hind legs so she could rub her head against my hand. A month later I saw her sneak into our garage holding a newborn kitten in her mouth! She had been pregnant and gave birth to three babies! We took them into the house and took care of them. We found new homes for all of the kittens so they’re doing well now. We decided to keep the mom. That’s how we got our girl Chamomile. She’s been such a joy to have!

I was feeding an outside cat for about a year and a half. One day when I was sitting outside he joined me on my outside couch. It was a slow transition, but today, he comes in at night and sleeps with me. He's still very skittish, but he has helped me through some really emotional times. We have helped each other through learning to trust one another. I named him Chubbs, and I just adore him. Now, if I could just get him to stop waking me up at 4 am to go outside... lol...They are their own bosses. :)

:) My tiger was rescued from outside also. One morning my husband woke me up before work and said, 'Come look!' I walked outside and our dog ran over to the car and started nosing under it. A little kitten was hissing at her and when my H called the dog over, kitty ran to me, up my leg and sat on my neck and shoulder glaring at the dog, lol. She loved being with me but hated being inside--we have ceiling fans and she freaked when she looked up and saw them. For the first year of her life she was an outside cat, only coming in to recuperate from being fixed. In the south it's warm enough to be out, but this winter we started letting her into the laundry area and set up a litter box for her. From my H saying, 'No cats in the house,' we've graduated to her mostly in and sometimes out. She sleeps by my right side (dog gets the middle) for a few hours, then sleeps under the bed at my head for the rest of the night. I always sleep more peacefully with her purring under my hand. We're so happy and amazed they can sleep together within a foot of each other and not get wound up :). Since the beginning the dog and cat were like oil and water...took them two years to make nice

@deborahcurtis1385
@deborahcurtis1385 Жыл бұрын
It's really hard when they do that. My cat is bringing me headless birds and they are native wildlife. I can't put a collar on him, he takes it off. He even used to take off the collar of my other cat which is Abyssinian, as a favour. He rips into the security door, to him it's a can that needs opening. He's a Bengal or Savannah. Hunting is a strong instinct for him. He really enjoys the outside. I try not to think about the loss of birdlife, he doesn't do it a lot, but he does do it. I've heart that feeding your cat a variety of food will blunt their hunting instinct. He's got loads of personality and is very loving. Both my cats are rescues but oddly they have turned out to be actual breeds. I guess people buy a cute cat perhaps as a gift and they don't want to interact with the cat. So the cat becomes destructive, especially if kept in an apartment with hardly any stimulus. The Abby rescue will not play with paper. I feel certain she did something with paper and that's why she was abandoned. Now she will never play with it not even if it's scrunched into balls. It took her 2 years to purr. she was in a very bad state when I got her, she was very afraid of humans. Neither of them purr readily, but he's afraid of making her jealous so he suppresses his purrs. She's more quiet and is only just starting to purr unprompted by patting. Right now they're on my bed where they sought refuge from carpet cleaning. The Bengal inspected everything in a very disapproving way. They get anxiety if there's change to surroundings because that precipitates abandonment to them. The Bengal cannot be caged to go to the vet, he lets out a blood curdling yowl. He's so afraid of being abandoned again. They're so funny.

Cats have always been my best friends and comforters since early childhood. Many years ago while walking through the animal shelter a beautiful, young, part Maine Coon cat reached out and chose my daughter and me. He was highly intelligent and accepted everyone or any other animal we had in the family with enthusiasm and uncommon affection. He immediately became such a great pal to me, I named him Chum. He was a wonderful cat who loved to hang around with our dogs and wag his tail like they did. It was quite comical to watch. A few years after he joined our family my husband passed away and as I was sitting in his favorite chair grieving beyond despair my darling Chum gently got on my chest, put his arms around my neck and just laid his head on my shoulder. I believe the hand of God put him there to comfort me, and what a comfort he was. That big, sweet cat remained my constant companion and lived to be just eleven years old. It was like losing a brother when he died. I will always remember him as an amazing gift to me.

I am so sorry for your loss. A cat can make things a bit easier. They have a certain something that can help in grieving situations. There is a good reason they were worshipped in dynastic Egypt. Bastet was the cat goddess in Egypt. She was worshipped in Lower Egypt (The delta area) in the city of Bubastis. You will even find mummified cats in tombs of their owners. So, people's relationship with cats goes back a long time. I know I find comfort in having my cats around and they do sense when something is wrong with me. They seem to be much more attentive. I too have lost cats to old age over the years and it hurts as bad as loosing a person in my life.

My beloved Bibi used to sleep on the sofa in our living room, far away from my bedroom. But she drove me to bed every night at a certain hour, we played and cuddled for a while then she purred me to sleep and went away: the moment she jumped off my bed I knew I was falling asleep in a few instants. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night in silent grief or tears, without even turning on the bed lamp not to wake my husband, Bibi instantly felt it (only cats and the Universe know how) and came across the house next to me, sitting between my head and my shoulder, gently hitting and caressing my face with her adorable wet nose. Then she purred me back to sleep and the moment she jumped again off my bed I knew the episode was over, my heart full of consolation. She passed away seven years ago…💔 Whenever I think of her or see a pic, tears fill my eyes with love and gratitude. By now, I think she gave me the greatest and purest love I ever met in my life. My 7 month old Ragamuffin named Ollie is the best. I believe he knows I suffer with physical pain. Our cat likes to “tuck us in” She yells at us when we don’t go to bed on time (10-10:30pm) and when we do, she will walk a perimeter around us before either cuddling with one of us or jumping up to her perch on top of the dresser.

My wife and I have had cats for 60yrs or so and currently have a Maine Coon male that had a troubled past. He was returned to the shelter twice and was very timid when we got him. He hid for the first week. Now he is a friendly and outgoing cat and a lot more confident. Turns out he is also an excellent mouser and we find a gift somewhere every week or so. He is by far the sweetest cat we have ever had and such a gentleman. NEVER demands, just asks quietly with one of his trills.

But he immediately came and lay on my chest, tucked his little paws in and started purring. All the time blinking with his eyes. I immediately felt better. This was so amazing. My husband and I rescued two Siamese siblings, a boy and a girl. We also have a tuxedo cat who is much older. This older male cat has taught these "babies" a great deal, and grooms them all the time. The Siamese cats are beautiful, and they are so intelligent that sometimes we have to spell words because they have huge vocabulary recognition. They respond a lot like dogs. They react to "come', "dinnertime", "it's time to go to bed". We also have two golden retrievers. If I say a dog's name, the Siamese cats look right at the correct dog. If I say, "Go see daddy.", they go racing down the hall to his home office. I adore cats, and love all animals. Thanks for a great video!

Actually the allergy thing makes sense. I grew up in a house where we adopted/fostered every type of animal. From barn animals to birds and cats. And still to this day I am not allergic to anything. Sometimes dust makes me sneeze a little but thats as far as it ever goes. Highly recommend fostering animals if you cannot keep them for a long length of time! Helps not only the animal but also everyone involved. You can teach a child many different things with animals.

I was in the ER of an animal hospital, with my budgie in her cage next to me. I was worried so I was crying and I was trying to hide it from the people in the room. One cat just came up to me, I immediately covered my budgies cage, but the cat didn’t even look that way. She sat on my lap, literally pushed my bag to the floor, started purring and making biscuits on my lap. I still have tiny holes on my jeans from that day, to remind me of an amazing cat❤️

(He doesn't like lying on people; my previous cat who passed away late 2022 used to lie directly on my stomach or back while I slept). I always felt better. I didn't realise the actual purring was reduces pelvic pain associated with my menses; I thought it was just the anxiety decrease.

I’m mostly housebound and my cats help me fulfil the emotional and social needs I have. My family were not a cat family growing up, so I came late to understanding and experiencing cats… I got my first cats at 30 and now in my 40s there’s 5 of them. It’s a cross between having very small furry children and being in a feline soap opera. I genuinely think my life as it stands with my limitations would be enough to keep me going without these precious creatures.

So many things boil down to making sure everyone consents before we do something. I'm heartended that the world has you, Jackson. I also find it so sad that only relatively recently were cats acknowledged to be sentient. If we let them, cats teach us how to behave in relationships. Imagine if humans' default behavior included mutual respect for all living beings.

I truly believe that some cats are more intuitive than we think. I grew up around cats and am still around cats, so I've observed and learned a lot. Here's a couple examples that have stuck with me: 1. As a kid, I drew on the sidewalk a lot with chalk. One time, I wanted to draw one of the cats that was hanging out with me. She literally sat down in front of me and posed until I was done. Then she got up and walked away. 2. This past summer, one of my outdoor cats had a litter. They weren't quite weaned yet, but I noticed that one had fallen ill. I brought him in the house to see if I could nurse him back to health, but he died later that night. I went back out to the shed to find a box to put him in. I saw the mom, and as I bawled, I apologized to her and told her that I tried. Her eyes showed a surprising level of understanding and sympathy, and it made me cry more.

I now have 5 cats! Two females and three males. One of my boys will be 19 years old this year and our youngest, a female, is just 6 months old. They've all been adopted from shelters or were strays - our calico female was literally about to be run over on a busy street back in 2014, my husband and I stopped our car and I went out and got her off the street - and she has always literally shown how grateful she was for this. One of our other younger male cats, an almost two-year-old tabby, went blind on account of having an infection in his eyes when he was a stray kitten. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done... but he hardly behaves as if he can't see! He's happy, well-adjusted, playful and pretty much the most affectionate cat I've ever owned! I love dogs, too, but right now my 5 cats make my family's life more complete. My husband wasn't a cat person but became one! And our two children have been in the company of cats since they were born.

@LunaMooMoo Thank you. I have left comments on other channels but have yet to get a response. My 7 month old Ragamuffin named Ollie will shake his front paws from time to time. He seems to do this right after he eats and when he is at ease. I have yet to observe any pattern to his shaking. My wife says his front paws get pins and needles from the increased pressure. We got him an adjustable food tray. This is my first cat. His skin does not roll, nor does he lock his skin aggressively. I saw some cats have a twitching disease. Perhaps I am being overprotective or perhaps I am more observant than others. Idk, I am worried. Any thoughts on why Ollie would shake his paws like so? Thank you so much in advance. 😺

I took in a stray cat about 4 months ago. He was malnourished and underdeveloped and overall in very poor condition. He barely moved, barely lived. He learned to live with me, to love, to play, to ask, to talk to me, to misbehave. I call him Carlin. Now he's like any spoiled cat. I have anxiety and depression. He was only with me for a few days when he started climbing up my neck. They are extremely empathetic animals, I never knew how much. He just lies there, completely vulnerable, trusting himself to me, purring, rubbing his head against me whenever anxiety strikes. I helped him when he struggled so he helps me when I struggle.

I had Covid a few weeks ago and had rescued my cat a week prior. She was only seven months old and still getting used to living with me, as well as becoming an indoor cat in general. When I got Covid, she immediately became attentive and stayed on the corner of my bed. She stayed in a corner that allowed her to watch me, as well as the window and front door in my small apartment. For days, I only got out of bed to have a quick snack, clean her litter box, and feed her. She never left my side. Every time I woke up, she was on her corner of the bed, watching over me.

But they are inseparable, they hang out together all day, sleep cuddled up to each other, play, vocalise, Tommi will let Griffin eat as much of his food as he wants before cleaning the bowl himself, and as soon as he brought Griffin home, he started bringing his prey home for him too! He always brought Lizards home to play with, but now its birds etc and they all get given to Griffin

A few years ago I lost my elderly cat that I had since I was 3 years old. She died from I think a stroke in my arms. It wasn’t unexpected, I had to give her blood thinners every few days for about a year before she passed, but this stroke was too massive and it killed her. A few days later, my mother came across a Facebook post about someone who had a kitten they didn’t want. This wasn’t a great part of town and it wasn’t uncommon for people to just leave their cats when they move or didn’t want them anymore. We picked him up that day and he’s been a joyous light in my life. He loves to play and run around, and he loves to hide and jump out at me when I walk by. Thanks to that, horror movies don’t give me jump scares anymore, lol. I love him so much and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. Sometimes things just line up perfectly, and he is one of those things in my life. ❤️
