CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) targets an air tank in the shark's mouth, blowing the fish to pieces.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

Something I just realized, even though Quint was gone and Hooper was trapped on the seabed, all three men still helped take out the shark together. It was Quint's rifle, Hooper's oxygen tank, and Brody's aim that all came together to kill the shark.

I love this kind of character development. Brody started off as a meek, passive character, too afraid to enter the ocean or truly take a risk until he was the last man standing and had to act to save his own skin. And he does it by blowing up the goddamn shark with a tank in its mouth. Absolutely magnificent.

Just imagine Hooper's situation if Brody hadn't managed to shoot the shark in the end. He would've had to watch the shark eat Brody and then realize that the boat is destroyed, and that his only way to get back to land is by swimming. In other words, he would've had to wait for the shark to eat him too.

I cannot get enough of this movie! I get my love of it from my uncle, who saw it when it first came out 45 years ago, long before I was born. He showed it to me for the first time when I turned thirteen, which is how old he was when he first saw it. Afterward, he told me what it was like to watch it in the theater when it first released. People were screaming every time the shark appeared; they screamed and sobbed when Quint died. When the shark was killed, he said the cheers and applause were almost deafening! People were on their feet cheering and applauding and hugging each other. He said he had never seen an audience react that way to a movie before. If time travel ever becomes possible, my first stop is going to be June 20th, 1975. Opening day of “JAWS”. What I would give to experience it like my uncle had for the first time!

Why do I keep watching this movie every time it's on? I realize it's not so much the terror I remember as a child or the shark scenes but the writing is so damn good. The 3 actors, Shaw, Schreider, Dreyfuss are incredible in their roles. Love how Schreider plays Brody with such subtlety throughout the movie. Dreyfuss is incredible for the new kid. In the scene where the shark is chasing the boat and Quint is about to blowout the boats engine, keep your eye on Dreyfuss his reactions are perfect. Than Quint starts singing the Spanish Ladies song and Dreyfuss turns around and stares at him in disbelief. You just know he's thinking how the hell did I get stuck with Captain Ahab? Shaw's USS Indianapolis story. This movie is a gem through and through bravo Spielberg.

The actors back in those days were legit badasses. Roy Scheider was in the navy and was also a golden gloves winner. Steve mcQueen was a marine, as was Gene Hackman and Charles bronson. Bronson actually fought in world war II. Ditto for jimmy stewart who flew bombing missions during the big one. Proper men all of them.

Eoin Brennan there’s still plenty of them today. First one that comes to mind is Adam Driver, who was a marine.

Honestly Brody’s laugh after killing Bruce was the best thing ever. Here’s this guy, knows next to nothing about sharks and hates the ocean and he’s left to contend with it after Quint gets eaten and Hooper is trapped, he was so resourceful and used strategy to kill this terrifying monster of a shark and effectively ends the chain of deaths at Amity beach. Best moment ever.

Nothing will ever beat this film. Besides Jaws 2 every other Shark Film is just silly fun or stupid. Nothing will ever beat this film or come close to it’s sequel. One of the greatest movies of all time!

It still blows my mind that this was one of Steven Spielberg's first movies! To show such promise and wrangling together the team as he did showed he really was destined to be a great filmmaker.

Thank God they didn't go with the ending in the book. In the book (SPOILERS) the shark sinks the boat, Quint stabs the shark in the belly with a harpoon and the shark slides back into the water taking Quint with it via rope around his ankle, the shark races toward Brody as he prepares for his death and then....it just succumbs to its belly wound and very slowly sinks underwater, then Brody's like "Oh cool I'm alive. Well, see ya".........wasn't that just riveting

James Michel That's basically the ending of Moby Dick, with the harpoon and stuff, except the white whale doesn't apparently die. I have read that Benchley wanted Spielberg to have a more realistic ending because a breached scuba tank won't blow up like that (it will just rocket around like crazy), but Spielberg was shrewd to go for the crowd-pleasing ending. His career was really on the line with this movie.

Alan Falleur Yes, Peter was rather adamant about using the original novel ending, thinking that the explosive ending was just too unrealistic. Spielberg told him words to the effect of, "Look if I have their attention for two hours, they'll go for it." And the author said Spielberg turned out to be 100% correct...he witnessed the crowd cheering when he watched it.

They could improve the special effects Star Wars fashion, keep the look of Jaws the same, but enhance the close up movements and details to look more realistic with really good CGI, that is all that is needed, Reboot is bullshit and pointless

Yea, Spielberg used the same sound effect in his previous movie, Duel, with the truck. I heard somewhere he used it again here to relive that feeling of "the beast has finally been conquered".
