After the locals catch a tiger shark. Hooper explains to Brody that the chances "these bozos" caught the exact same shark is 100:1. Great display of Dreyfuss' talent in getting the timing and delivery right on, and to do it so convincingly. Roy Scheider's expression is also perfect -- at first dismissive, but then slowly realizing the reality.

I like how you can start to see the gears working in Brody’s head the second Hooper mentions the bite radius. It’s like he immediately goes into city cop mode and starts analyzing all the facts he has up to this point. On the beach, he only caught a glimpse of the shark, but it was enough to know that it was way bigger than the one that’s hanging in front of him. And he also realizes that this Tiger Shark was way too damn small to rip out an entire portion of a dock and drag it out to sea. That’s why he automatically backs up Hooper’s idea of cutting the Tiger Shark open, to confirm what he instantly knows. That it’s not the right shark.

I don't think it was humor, but rather jubilation. He was very happy when they caught the shark and thought the nightmare was over. However, when Hooper mentioned the difference in the bite radius, that sobered him up to reality. I loved Scheider's facial expressions in this movie. They spoke volumes of what the character thought and felt in every scene.

666 Only problem is he made a judgement call. Just because they caught A shark doesn’t mean they caught THE shark. Richard Dryfus's delivery is one-of-a-kind. Anyone who grew up watching this film knows all his lines by heart and has said stuff like this---"a-hundred-to-one---a-hundred-to onnne..."---out loud in one conversation or another when he's had the opportunity.

You can see how much Brody relies on Hooper's expertise here. They've only basically just met and his word is instantly trusted when Brody is told it's the wrong shark. Brody was all happy the town was safe again, even for an instant, and reality came crashing down like a ton of bricks. It's one of the things I love about the movie. Act 1 is Brody's leadership and authority which instantly goes away when Hooper arrives in the second act and the third is arguably Quint's authority we hang on.

"They've only basically just met and his word is instantly trusted when Brody is told it's the wrong shark." Hooper was called in as the top shark-expert from the federal Oceanographic Institute; and Brody had already seen him peform an analysis on the remains of the girl, and call out the city coroner for his lying to cover it up, after Brody trusted him to leave the beaches open, resulting in the death of Alex Kitner. Of COURSE Brody's going to trust Hooper.

He knew because you can take the character of Quint as a representation of alcoholism. It's not so much as this IS the wrong shark as much as Quint's like the harbinger just passing by and smiling like, "Yeah, we've still got demons to battle." I like to believe the shark is just the guilt the Brody feels from his drunk driving accident that got him transferred, that by all means this is the shark that killed the woman and boy. Jaws is a very interesting book and movie.

I think this scene was well-chosed; I like ensemble pieces anyway, and here you have a fine cast working together to form several powerful narratives adding depth and weight to the overall drama. Both Ray Schnieder and Richard Dreyfuss were of course excellent in this film, with Robert Shaw in one of his finest ever performances completing the boat trio. I would just like to add Murray Hamilton's performance as the Mayer, and his excellently nuances evolution of emotions, recations and overall state as it progresses though the enveloping crisis. His skill shinces though were in his facial expressions and generally non-verbal reactions reinforcing the lines he delivers, so you already know how he feels and why he said what he said.

The thing is I hate to admit it but in this scene the mayor actually has a justifiable point. It is not the time or the place to cut open the shark and see the human remains of a child spill out in front of over 100 people. What they should’ve done however was just push everyone away and tell them ‘hey hey hey we have to confirm that this is a shark’ perform the autopsy and then tell everyone ‘hey we got the wrong shark’ that’s what they should’ve done.

That might be an adult tiger shark, but it's a small adult tiger shark. Tiger sharks can grow up to 20 feet (some say 25, but that's too rare). Based on its head size, that thing was only about 9 ft (at most). 9 ft shark may attack humans, but it wouldn't be able to destroy the human corpse like the chunky salsa in such short time.

Tiger sharks average size is between 12-15 feet. The chances of finding one at 20 is at least 1000 to 1. Even finding great whites at 20 feet is rare. They’re usually 16. But this tiger I agree looks at least 9 feet.

does nobody else see the actual arrows sticking out of that tiger shark? Who goes shark hunting and thinks, "You know what'll be helpful out there? my kids bow and arrow set! that'll kill a man-eating shark!"
@misterfunnymanguy
@misterfunnymanguy 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Maybe someone on the set thought the arrows would add to the terror, or maybe it was added to poke fun at the amateur fishermen... sort of portraying them as fools. 🤔
@TheAmateurEditor
@TheAmateurEditor 4 жыл бұрын
@@misterfunnymanguy Perhaps with all those people out on the hunt, the arrows were meant to 'tag' the kill as theirs. There were a lot of people out there with guns and I doubt Amity has a ballistics lab to run bullets recovered from the kill and match them to a particular rifle. With arrows you can at least show you have the same brand/colour in your weaponry and claim you were the party that killed it.
