CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In his underwater cage, Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) struggles to fend off the shark.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

Im glad they rewrote the character Hooper. In the novel he is a jackass who slept with Brody's wife and gets eaten by the shark leaving behind a legacy of an asshole. In the movie he is a more funny loveable character who audiences didnt want to die and im glad he didn't.

This whole sequence is terrifying. Probably the scariest in the film. But I LOVE that jaw dropping shot starting at the 0:31 second mark, when Hooper backs himself up to the corner of the cage and the whole shark comes in full frame, then Williams score crecendos louder as he passes... ugh. perfection.

Ha ha I have to say, I'm a very fragile person against jumpscares and when I saw signs of jumpscares coming I usually turn the sound off. But that moment the shark came quietly without a sudden shrieking sound or something like "SURPRISE!" sound. Anyway you get what I mean. The shark came so quiet I didn't even feel a single jump. I replay that scene a couple of times, and I think to myself "Was that it?"
@RockWillLiveOn
@RockWillLiveOn 10 жыл бұрын
Crafterthecaster hahahah yep. I do think I know EXACTLY what you mean. There's no pretext before the shark actually makes impact. You kinda see an object looming in the background and before you can make any sense of it... BAM... the impact of the shark's head hitting the cage. And then followed by that TERRIFYING music score. That's horror/panic/terror done right, in my opinion.

I remember showing this to my English class in high school; it was for a presentation I was doing on Peter Benchley. One girl asked me, "Do you ever see the shark is this?" I answered, "Eventually," Then I put on this scene. When Bruce swam by the cage, the whole class was shocked at how big he was. Then, when he slammed into the cage a couple of girls actually screamed.

Good point , I read the book years ago and again recently. There's a passage in the book though that really creeps me out. Recall it's Brody I think on the boat when they are a few days into hunting the shark. He's on the deck alone and gets the feeling he's being watched, he turns around and sees the sharks head just motionless off the bow just staring at him kind of grinning .... Fuck !

Fun fact: at 2:39, that's a real shark spinning and destroying the cage. The original ending had Hooper dying in the cage or being eaten or something along those lines but Spielberg wanted to use the footage so badly that they changed the ending in order to use it. Every time I watch it I can't get over how brilliant it looks and how one change to a script / story can totally change what the final version will look like 📼 📸 🐠

Yes, filmed on February 26th 1974 by Ron Taylor and his wife Valerie at Dangerous Reef South Australia. 3 months before Spielberg started filming. Spielberg wanted more footage but they tried twice more and couldn't get any more. The Taylors were even threatened by local abalone divers to stop chumming the sharks. The divers were on edge because a local abalone diver called Terry Manuel had recently been killed by a great white in another part of South Australia.

Hooper was scripted to die here just like in the book. Only because while getting the live great white footage in Australia one of the sharks accidentaly got entangled in the cage before anyone was inside and started tearing it to pieces. The shots of the shark destroying the empty cage were so intense that it was rewritten to have Hooper escape so the footage could be used.

At first when I saw the shark I thought, "This is what everyone's afraid of? A regular shark?" Then when the shark silently snuck up on him without needing to roar I was terrified. +MichaelLeroi When they filmed the real great white shark off South Australia in Feb 1974 (first actual shooting on Jaws that they did)they had no idea that the mechanical sharks wouldn't work six months later and so they never knew that the barrels would play a big part in the film. Doesn't explain why the mechanical shark doesn't have ropes though hehe.

I love this scene (even though I haven't seen the movie) for the fact that it shows just how powerful the shark is by its movement. It just glides by him, not taking notice because Hooper is simply not worth his immediate attention. And it becomes rather creepy when he just disappears into the oceanic version of fog. Then he reappears very suddenly right behind Hooper.

The_Duker YT: Not necessarily. Sharks have special electrical sensors embedded in their noses which let them detect the electrical currents given off by living beings. It’s how they find prey in low light environments, so even if they lost sight in one eye, they could still hunt just as effectively.

Steven Spielberg was indeed much ahead of his time with movies like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Jurassic Park, Hook, Saving Private Ryan....the the list is endless...Guess Jaws was not only a cult movie of its time but in the history of movies ever made..Only a director of that class can make a movie like Jaws not showing the shark almost half way through the movie yet it gave almost all the audience a chill running down our spine...Sir....it was a treat to have been an audience for your movies and a blessing to have been able to view your movies this life...Love from India....

No kidding, that part is a sign that if you go in a cage to attack a life-threatening shark with a weapon, you have to keep looking and looking in ALL directions for the shark WITH your hands inside the cage. And when you see the shark coming towards you, you have to watch to see if it comes close enough to the cage and then you attack it with the weapon. The shark obviously wasn't close enough to the cage when it swam by at 0:35, because Hooper didn't attack it yet with the weapon. 0:47 If I been in that cage with the weapon, I'd be thinking while I'm watching the shark "The shark is probably going to come back soon IF it notices me, just like when it noticed the people swimming in the water when it killed Alex Kitner. The shark will come back and it will dare to try to break the cage to get me, and I'm going to stab that sucker with the weapon the minute it's close enough to the cage, and the shark will be hurt very badly!!

I don't know what you people want from this. The robot shark is the most realistic looking robot in movie history. Sharks are supposed to look lifeless with their mouths open. This thing looked like a shark, a big shark, a monster. I could hardly even tell the difference between the scenes with the real shark and the robot. This was more real and believable than any CGI scene you see nowadays.

Joseph Franc personally I like that it’s “fakeish” compared to a real shark. This shark is supposed to be a devil, pursuing its human prey without hesitation. I always thought of it like a terminator trying to blend in with humans. There’s something about it that makes it more terrifying in that it doesn’t look real.

Hooper's big mistake - besides going down in that cage - was holding his pole outside the cage before the shark struck. He should have waited until AFTER the shark attacked to try to stick it. By holding it outside the cage, the shark was able to make him drop it by surprising him from behind, something Hooper didn't expect but should have given this was no ordinary shark.
