for all UK residents worried about swimming, the porbeagle shark is zero threat to humans as there are no recorded cases of them biting or attacking a human. With our size alone we dont fall into their prey bracket as they dont possess the teeth for biting a taring. They are a member of the mackrel shark family, so similar to mako's, and are only an incredibly distant relation to the great white. So dont worry :) How these chaps handled the shark was wonderful and the fact they tagged him and swam him out before releasing was perfect. Very sadly they are on the endangered species list because they were heavily fished for that stupid chinese cuisine, shark fin soup. Keep up the good work lads, you were extremely fortunate in your fishing to have hooked him, thankyou for not hurting him x

I was fishing off Newhaven arm, East Sussex in 1996, and a group of marine biologists were fishing on the inside of the arm (Where families swim when the tide is in) I must have been 14" on the top of the wall fishing on the outside the arm in deeper water, we heard a huge splash of water where the marine biologists were and could see the huge mouth of a Porbeagle Shark, since then I have trained as a qualified SCUBA diver, and have dived in some of the greatest shark hot spots in the world, both freestyle and caged diving. I am an avid supporter and spokesperson for shark preservation. Recently we managed to sign an agreement with the Indonesian government, in which they have declared the southern part of the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia as a protected wildlife reserve where it is illegal to hunt, kill or poach for any species of shark, whale or dolphin.

I used to fish off St, Catherines point at that time, and yes sadly we killed the sharks we caught, but the reason they aren't there, is they used to follow the liners when Southampton was a a major port, now cruise liners are getting frequent, they will appear again.

You have to kill sharks to weigh them and we were not prepared to do that as we wanted to fit it with a dart tag.It was in my estimation 5/550lbs,and I have caught sharks more than three times that size so can guage weights pretty well.It was a Porbeagle shark.

@@WardenOfTerratheres lots of evidence they are getting bigger in UK waters....Some experts believe porbeagles and blue sharks are migrating to UK waters because there is not enough food for them in the over-fished Atlantic. In May 2012 two men fishing from a 17ft boat off the coast of North Devon caught, tagged and released a 10ft long porbeagle shark which was estimated to weigh 550lbs. A boat angler fishing off the coast of Cornwall caught a 9ft porbeagle shark which was estimated at weighing in excess of 400lbs. The angler, 45-year-old Mark Nelson had also caught a 300lb porbeagle the day before. A 300lb porbeagle shark was caught fourteen miles off the coast of Swanage, Dorset in September 2014. Fisherman Jan Davey caught a 6ft porbeagle in nets 300 yards off Chesil Beach in Dorset in October 2015. Three porbeagle sharks weighing 238lbs, 392lbs and 500lbs were caught off the coastline of Devon and Cornwall in April 2017. The 392lbs porbeagle was caught just a quarter of a mile out to sea

I know all the science says Great Whites should be visitors to UK waters and I don't doubt that they are, but this makes me realise how sitings by the uninformed can be deceptive. The average person who's never heard of a Porbeagle or a Shortfin Mako would look at either species and conclude it was a GWS.

We have porbeagle in the North Sea. I remember a few years ago walking up the coast I found a seal with a bite out of it, must have been about 12-15 inches..I suspect there are big sharks all around our coasts, tourist industries that rely on holiday makers wouldn’t be very vocal about it for fear of putting people off beach holidays.

This is a large Porbeagle Shark. They're Mackerel Sharks. They're closely related to the Salmon Shark, which is also of a genetic line called Mackerel Sharks. Both the Porbeagle & Salmon Shark are related to Mako Sharks & it is thought Great White Sharks are also distant descendants of Mako or Mackerel Sharks. Porbeagle Sharks are now an endangered species. They're not considered dangerous to humans, unless provoked or frightened by them. There is no recorded fatality caused by humans interacting with Porbeagle Sharks. They generally live in cooler, deep water where they hunt fish. Their range in the North Atlantic is as far north as Newfoundland & south to the Caribbean. A baby Porbeagle Shark tagged off of New England, U S. traveled all the way to the Caribbean (Aruba) & back to the New England coast, U S & exactly to where it was tagged. Female Porbeagle Sharks max out at a length of around 7-8 ft., while the males reach 5-7 ft. long. These sharks can be readily recognized by the white markings (patch) at the base of their dorsal fin, at the bottom back of it. The same white patch this one has. These sharks are viviparous with the females hatching eggs internally & delivering live pups. They're one of only 4 currently known shark species that are considered warm blooded, as they can regulate their body temperature in relation to water temperature similar to mammals. The Great White Shark, Salmon Shark & Mako Shark are the other 3 shark species that are considered warm blooded. They were considered threatened but are now an endangered species due to overfishing by fisheries & sports fisherman. They have also been mistaken for the Smooth Dog Fish & baby Sand Tiger, as juveniles. Consequently the babies have frequently been killed as a nuisance by fishermen resulting in even fewer mature sharks. Since they're endangered, they're now also a protected species, as most shark species today, hopefully soon will be. They & all sharks are being slaughtered at an alarming rate (1 million plus a yr) primarily for their fins so someone can have shark fin soup. A disgusting concoction (I had some many yrs ago in Japan) purchased as a status symbol, since it's very expensive but not very good to eat. It's actually like eating rubber bands that have no flavor, since sharks' fins are cartilage & skin. No meat.

+Julia McDonald-Carberry Well said Julia. The practice of "finning" is frankly a waste of a shark, though you should differentiate between the massive overkill by commercial fishermen compared to sportfishermen.I would suggest any Porbeagle caught accidentally by UK sportfishermen today are returned anyway. We certainly tag any we get and return any we get ourselves. Good instructional, thanks for taking the trouble to post.

It's not unusual that you might get the odd great white up in that area, but if the seal population was attracting their attention I imagine sightings would be much more frequent, like they are in South Africa, Australia and California. We just had a woman attacked and critically injured (not sure if she survived, was in critical condition still a week after the attack) here in Southern California. A week later a beach patrol helicopter counted 15 great white "juveniles" around 10 ft long in the same area in one afternoon (they assume the attacking shark was a larger adult). If great whites start picking UK as a favorite feeding ground, you'll know it.

Shark tagging is done for conservation purposes. The tags contain a microchip that records the Sharks movements recording information like what depth it has been swimming at, what speed it swims at and other information like that. We know very little about Sharks and tagging is currently the best way to learn more about them and their natural behaviour. To understand how important tagging is to us for learning about Sharks check out a docu called The whale that ate Jaws with Dr Ingrid N. Visser

I am thinking maybe 5/550lbs as it was so fat we couldn't roll it on its side for the camera. Pretty difficult in a 17 foot boat. Angler on the rod, and I have to sort the boat/leader etc so we have to do best we can.Had plenty of 1000lb sharks so I know how big 500 is though. Most big sharks carry gut weight so you never see it from the surface. Only way to really know was kill it, and we weren't prepared to do that.

Great Beagle. Very lucky the angler didn't lose a hand or more with his handling skills, way to close to that sharks mouth and leaning over in full range of his ability to surge up and take him down was not very smart. Lucky Man

I like to use 50lb mono .You could go lighter for blue sharks, but with the area we work for Porbeagles, and time of year they run, the average is around 300lbs.Not worth all the investment of effort and then break off the shark of a lifetime.

Used to work on a crabber in the south Devon coast, used to put tracers hook and horse makers as bait. Caught several lovely blue sharks, but 1 was found on the hook just the head, teeth marks clearly visible (not prop marks) would this have been a porbeagle?
