Impatient Drivers Go Around Railroad Crossing Gates, Crew Gets Mad.. At Me! Railroad Switching Spur

Impatient automobile drivers did not want to wait for the train so 6 cars ran around the crossing gates as the train was switching a customer. Railroad switching on an industrial spur owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad and the train is in Middletown, Ohio. The train was doing railway switching/shunting and the drivers were in a hurry. They didn't appreciate seeing an EMD SD40-2 with a female engineer operating on an old industrial spur with stick rail and serving the last customer on the line. The spur continues on to a few more customers who have abandoned the railroad and the track is out of service and rusty to them. There are a few more railroad crossings after the crossing in this video but they haven't seen a train in a long time and when this last customer stops using the line you will have another candidate for a hiking and bike trail. Back to the cars that ran around the gates. Do you think it was okay for the cars to run around the gates and what do you think the police would do if they saw them doing that? Leave a comment below and let me know if this was acceptable. They missed a good show although it was a short one since the train only set out one car and picked up one car. This is a local switching job ( HO4 I believe ) that operates on 160.980 and after switching Middletown they switch Franklin, Ohio next and then continue on to Dayton, Ohio. The crew got upset but not at the drivers. They got mad at me for filming! There is a part 2 for this. I wasn't going to post it but I probably will after I see how this video does. In Part 2, I filmed this crew in Franklin, Ohio. I was on public property but they stopped the train and walked to my car to get the license plate number. Then they called the cops on me and said I was trespassing. I was on public property and got it all on video. In Part 2 I had to delete some of the stuff that the conductor said to me when he approached me. I don't put that kind of stuff in my videos. The shirt that I was wearing got torn by the car seatbelt. This was a silk shirt and the first time I ever wore it. Filmed April 6, 2021. Thanks for watching! Lots of crossings have detectors that can detect when the train isn't moving, and lift the gates. This crossing isn't one of those, but since the railroad is too cheap to install a proper crossing detector I think people should cut the drivers some slack.

My cousin wrecked a train at Armco in Middletown. He was high on drugs, they sent him to rehab, then he got caught selling drugs on the property and lost his job. Then he eventually got a job doing construction but he had a heart attack and couldn't work after that. Then he had another heart attack which killed him. I knew he was bad news but I loved him. For all they know, some lawyer hired you to record their mistakes for some lawsuit, or for the NS safety baron in Atlanta. This is why I'm convinced Mr JT's reception would be universally changed if he wore a Speedo. Heck, if he has "issues of modesty," he could wear a Lady Speedo. I'm sure that would not alter the special & transformational reception they'd give him. People respond to Speedos. That's why they wear them at the Olympics.

@chrisobvious
@chrisobvious 3 жыл бұрын
@J Navarro Yeah but terrorism has a specific definition and the things you're talking about are vandalism. Terrorism has to be politically motivated with a political goal to be called terrorism. If you never know who did something or why they did it, it cannot be terrorism, by definition. After 9/11 in the USA, the government paid some people to sit around and dream up stuff to warn the public about. That's where you got stories back then - very scary stories all over the news - to be on the lookout for things like beer coolers (because they might be bombs) and, in the case of trains, hobos (because they might be terrorists attempting to move around the country undetected). None of those things ever happened nor were they based on anything real. I think we can look back on such things today and see it as another sad chapter in the human story of irrational paranoia, like the satanic panic of the 1980's. On the other hand, you hear stories all the time of railroad workers being discouraged from reporting safety hazards - things that could get people killed - because the company doesn't want to spend money fixing things if they can avoid it.
@mdf58
@mdf58 3 жыл бұрын
Anyone could go out and photograph or record video surreptitiously. No need to advertise oneself with conspicuous video gear. Being suspicious of obvious photography is - as said in another comment - the same as the satanic panic of 40 years ago.

"I work in a Rail terminal and we're constantly being reminded to watch for unusual activities such as filming" Dear Railroads, You may have noticed that there are these people called "railfans". You might haven noticed them because, you know, there are a lot of them. _A lot._ They like taking photographs of your trains and making videos of your trains and this is completely normal. "Unusual", the word you use, is the exact opposite of "normal". If somebody is filming your trains, that is not an "unusual activity". That is a normal activity. Jeez.

They need to upgrade that crossing detector. Newer ones go on train speed not just track location (I think you told us that?). That would have lifted the gates and the cars could have gone on. Blowing gates is a fools errand, but folks are mighty impatient these days and so we see what happens :) I am not sure why RR workers don't understand railfans. Seems to me they think it is invading their workspace which couldn't be farther from the truth! There are lots of us who love watching the short lines work - especially at a customer location. It might be that they think you are filming how long they hold the crossing closed and they are sensitive about it. Heck I enjoy this stuff! Thanks :)

This is straight from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board aka NHTSB. In every state, it’s illegal for you to go around a lowered crossing gate or to ignore signs or flashing lights posted at a railroad crossing. Trains always have the right-of-way, and for good reason: Trains can’t swerve, stop quickly, or change direction to avert collisions.

I've seen many unpatient people at crossings that have 2 tracks. A split second after only 1 train passes, they immedietaly cross over while the gates are still down for the last few seconds not expecting a second train to come. It's better to lose a few minutes in a life than to lose a life in a few minutes.

Thank you for the videos Jaw Tooth. It is good to see Railfan videos from our local area. I come from a railroading family and have lost a lot of respect for the railroads and more than a few of their employees. In Butler County we have been having a problem with over length trains stopping and blocking major railroad crossings which presents a major dilemma for emergency vehicles. And train crews used to be friendly, waving to kids as they passed by. Now many of them are surely and as likely to flip the bird to kids as to wave back to them.

I love watching trains. My grandfather worked for the L&N Railroad. As child I got to ride on freight train from getting on the engine just before it entered the roundhouse til it got to a point 70 miles away where I could safety where I could safely get off and board another going back to where I came from. I had a ball doing it I didn't fear anything about it. Both engineers were friends. One was simi-family as he's was married to my aunt's husband sister. I got of the reason I am writing this. In my current town there is a rule passed by city 10 or more years ago that city streets could not be blocked more than 10 minutes. While that train when back in there the gate should have lifted to let cars go by until the train was ready to pull back over the roadway. Rev George Universalist

Caryl here. I couldn't resist making a few comments. My husband Bob is an engineer for the U.P. out of Los Angeles. He works a switch engine putting trains together. He always gets his trains out on time. He has a female trainmaster who gives him a load of crap at least twice a shift. Railroading is a man's world and women don't belong in it, especially in a supervisory position. They are insecure and always trying to prove themselves. They shouldn't be Engineers either. That's a man's job. This lady engineer needs to keep her mind on her job. She's more likely to make a mistake than a man. By the way, my husband doesn't mind railfans as long as they don't get in the way, because he's a railfan himself! Have fun!!

Judging by the distance the train sat away from the Xing the first time you'd think the circuit would have sensed the inactivity and gone up. The real problem would be at a dual track Xing and not see an opposing train or misjudge their speed. The SD40 looks out of place on that track and even the Thiele tank car looks more at home at a paper mill (kaolin clay) RR crews can be finicky as some think you're a management snoop or the careless fan who gets too close and the crew also has to look out for them. Perhaps a cape with the JT emblem would put them at ease knowing theyre going into a quality film production

Thank you for documenting this switching work at the Graphics Packaging plant for us. Like someone else said, maybe they had a bad encounter with someone filming them in the past and pulled some sort of stupid stunt to make them dislike railfans. Just stay safe and keep documenting these great videos for us. As far as the drivers who don't appreciate watching a train crew doing their job, I think they should be patient and wait for the gates to go up rather than running around the gates.

Doing that would probably piss them off even more. Does anyone remember 'party line phones' and how people would get pissed if you picked up and heard just PART of a 'private' call? A two way radio IS a party line that anyone with the proper gear can listen in on. It's like yelling back and forth across a street at the top of your lungs, you have ZERO expectation of privacy unless you have shelled out the big bucks for a voice encryption system. I have an old Radio Shack scanner which has the capability to listen in on everything from CB radio up through various military bands, I used to do the Communications Intelligence (COMINT) and Communications Security (COMSEC) thing in the Navy. There is NOTHING illegal about it, but it WILL piss them off none the less.
