Awesome video! do you know how old is the steam engine is?
@JawTooth9 жыл бұрын
+Union Pacific 1982 Yes, this steam engine was built in 2009 by Kloke. I saw it at its debut in Owasso Michigan in July of 2009. It is a replica of an 1860s wood burner.
@JAILRail9 жыл бұрын
The replica was built in the late 80's or 90's. This is a replica.

JacksonAndLansing Railroad No, it was built in July 2009. It has a sister engine called the York that is even newer. I have videos of it also.

Jaw Tooth Say... I suppose what you say is true. The Train Expo 2009, in late July, was the first event it attended, I believe.

JacksonAndLansing Railroad Yes and there was at least half a dozen operating steamers there. It was a huge event.

I have only very recently discovered your site. I must say I am quite impressed. I am now a subscriber, and I plan to remain so. I am truly sorry about what you went through at the cannon debacle. Being retired FBI, I understand the importance of caution.........but was all that so necessary? When does it stop being caution and become paranoia? That is honestly why I seldom attend those functions anymore. However, your grand daughters were precious. Your train videos are really quite good. I have finally convinced my loving wife that there really is fun to be had going railfanning. She enjoys craft shows, so we combine the two. Thanks again for some great videos.
@JawTooth9 жыл бұрын
+Larry “Foghorn” Fountain Thank you for your nice comments! I introduced my wife to railfanning back in 1981 when we were at college. She has actually videoed some of my videos. We went to Las Vegas for four nights just to see the trains and never gambled. We got a room in the Rio over looking the tracks. Lol. Thanks for watching my videos!! Btw, some towns like LaGrange Ky have craft shops right next to the tracks so both of you can have fun at the same time and same place.

Well, there is quite a bit that can go wrong being that close or even in the oblique ahead of a piece like that. When they fire a typical charge it sprays out shotgun fashion and you can definitely feel the concussion from it. Even with only powder in it, if you were within 50 feet of it, in front of it, it would knock you on your butt and possibly burn you quite badly. re-enactors are not professionals, just hobbyists. Even just a small musket with only a load of powder in it can knock a hole through a felt hat from 10 feet away, believe me, I ruined a good hat that way, lol. Even when in formation coming across a field, when they fire that artillery you can feel the "WHUMP" hit you in the chest from quite a distance. Then, being hobbyists, what can go wrong often will and sometimes when loading the next round, if they haven't swabbed out the barrel from the previous round, or someone has taken the old spent percussion cap off before the charge is rammed home embers inside the tube from the last round can set off the new charge as it's being rammed home. I saw that happen once in Parker's Crossroads in Tennessee, it broke both the guys arms, powder burnt him, busted an eardrum and sent the ramrod flying like any other projectile across the field. Watch closely at the crew next time you see one and you'll observe just before the firing takes place, they'll lean away from the piece, mouth open, standing on the balls of their feet with a hand covering the ear closest to the piece. Standing behind the firing point, there is less chance of feeling the concussion from the firing and it's just safe practice to do so. At larger reenactments they'll have a roped off area for the public if they want to watch from a view more towards the front, but it will be far enough away that there will be minimal danger of anything going wrong. If you have a zoom and a tripod you can still get good camera shots that way.

Do they call themselves The Kentucky Railway Museum? Are they affiliated with The Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY? I've been meaning to get down that way. Been to the one in New Haven to Boston, KY on the 152 a few times back in the 90's. Yeah, you really don't want to be close to those old cannons when they go off, even with just powder and a bit of wadding in them. You'll notice when the re-enactors fire them they lean away from the piece, open their mouths, stand on the balls of their feet and cover the ear closest to the piece because of their concussion when they fire. I used to re-enact myself and even from the other side of the field when those things go off you can feel the "Whump" hit you in the chest. Take care, Gary
