Train Knocks Down The Signal, CSX Train Passes Me Then Norfolk Southern Train Passes Behind Me While I Am Still Filming! Close Look At Railroad Rail & Close Look At Railroad Radio With Audio. Trespasser Gets Off Track Just As Fast Train Comes Around Curve. These Trains Are In Walton, Kentucky.
The first train is a CSX auto racks at a railroad crossing in front of the city building on Main Street. Watch the train pass the line side signal and you can see the signal drop from green to red as the train passes. This is called "Knocking down the signal". There is also a defect detector just past the signal and we hear the audio from it while looking at my radio up close.
Then we go about a mile north to see two trains passing in a row. That was awesome and it was at one of my favorite Railfan locations. This railroad crossing has a CSX track with cross bucks, a parking lot and then a Norfolk Southern track with gates and lights. This is Locust Street in Walton, Kentucky. Train book through here on the NS track. We see my radio up close again with the railroad audio. We also get a close look at the rail from both lines.
Next is a fast Norfolk Southern train booking around the curve by the crossing. I got a little horn salute from that one. This is a northbound intermodal train with its next stop at Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Then I go about a mile south just past the Church Street crossing. A man was walking down the middle of the track. I waited for him to get a little ways down the track and then I filmed a northbound Norfolk Southern mixed freight booking past me. I tried to keep him out of the video since he didn't seem very friendly when he walked past me. I didn't want to get him upset. I heard that train approaching on 160.950 and I heard the CSX trains on 161.370.
Don't miss the Live Action Pets and the slide show that comes from the video.
Filmed Monday, September 23, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

How i loved riding in box cars when I was younger. The train would stop in my town and we would find a box car with maybe lots of cardboard inside for padding. We would go for days not knowing where we were going. Then we would get out, we would not know where we were then after finding out we would hitchhike home. This was in the 60s. Great memories.,

My favorite car is the type that saved my life many years ago: the empty flatcar, whether it’s a bulkhead or centerbeam, or *just* a flatcar. I was driving late at night, approaching a crossing that is heavily wooded on both sides. No lights flashing, gates were up, so I was going to drive right through. Suddenly out of the darkness, I see a street light illuminating the intersection just beyond, then it disappeared. I hit the brakes and narrowly avoided driving into the side of a train booking through at ~45 mph or so. If those 2-3 flats hadn’t been there then, I wouldn’t be here now. This was long before conspicuity tape, before blue plates at the crossing, before everyone had a cell phone. I drove to a pay phone and dialed 0 for operator because we didn’t have 911 yet.

It happened to me too! It was around 4 am and the crossing guard lights were not flashing. I was in a hurry, but something didn’t look right. Then a flat bed went by, and miraculously; I could see up the hill. My knees were shaking so bad, I had to get out and walk around for a minute. This crossing was in the boondocks, but my neighbor had his porch light on-(the only other person in about 50,000 acres) one light away from death. I miss the caboose!

What a heartwarming moment - i thank you from the bottom of my heart - for taking me into another world - when dreams become reality - waiting for the whistle of a train - letting time pass in front of our eyes - and in the process - forgetting about the past, don't care about tomorrow - just live this very moment of being happy. About seventy years ago my grandfather used to take us down to the railroad to watch the trains. His friend was a crossing guard at a street level crossing that was not automotic. He had to lower the gates by hand every time that a train passed. When the guard died, the railroad closed the crossing. Back in those days all trains had a caboose, which apparently is now not necessary. I have always loved trains and have chosen them before planes if I had the time. I have ridden the Empire Builder, the Coast Starlight, the City of New Orleans, and others from Jacksonville to Washington DC and through the southwest whose names I do not remember. I have also ridden the Mexican National Railroad, the Canadian National Railroad, the bullet train in Japan, and trains in the People's Reublic of China. The trans-Siberian railroad is on my bucket list.

Reminds me of when I was a child and watched the trains go by. First it was the coal burning ‘puffer bellies’ belching clouds of black smoke. Hobos used to ride these. As I got a little older and not terrified by the train the box car attendant sometimes threw a penny or a piece of hard candy. One time the train was going too fast for the curve in the track and the engine tipped and lay on its side. Years later in my teens I would keep track of the engine number and count and keep track of the number of cars it was hauling. This was before TV.

Nice video, JT! I’ve always liked the opera window center beam cars although hard to see them when they’re loaded!

JT is correct, rail weight is by the yard in the USofA, not by the foot.

I had to look up Joe Exotic but then I am allergic to "reality TV." Excellent catches. My favourite wagon? Torn between boxcars and covered hoppers.

I used to live on the South side of LaGrange, just outside by Allen Rd. This is the spot where the trains slow down to go into LaGrange proper. I lived at the far end, close to I-71 and when they hit that brake it always had this "thump" that you could feel. This was a spot where brake lines blew out more regularly. It's the old Lakewood Gardens greenhouses, if that helps locate it.
