Talk about major flat spot on the wheel. They will have to replace that soon. Did you see the open door on that seaco connex box at 18:40? The green cars are your carbon black cars they come from Cabot Corporation (CAB-O-SIL Division). It's our turn for the snow this weekend with this second storm the Smokies look great with snow on them here in NC. Y ou may get a few inches to then there maybe another storm next weekend. Have a Great Day and Happy Rail Fanning.

One could tell it was the tail end of that storm as the vehicular traffic was extremely low. No doubt some of the trains were running off schedule. Since that first DC to AC conversion on NS think of how many hundreds have followed. A great meet on the Intermodals and the last train had the best set of mixed Freight cars including that cut of 13 flat cars going back for aluminum ingots. With the cold and snow even the local seemed to perform its duties with a sense of urgency. With the temperature at 18 degrees maybe it was warmer inside the cars of potatoes. Actually some hash browns and scrambled eggs sound mighty good about now. Thanks for bundling up and catching these trains

JT: Whenever you see stuck brakes, or sparking wheels on a car, you should go to the nearest crossing, and call the phone number on the sign! Eventually, it could cause a derailment! I tried getting on Chessie System twice back in the 80's, but was nerer hired. They still used cabooses then, and they told us the brakeman should always face forward in the caboose, and be on the watch for smoking brakes, or sparks coming from the wheels.

@@JawTooth That's the feeling I got...! You were up there nice and cozy looking out at all the snow and ice.... I must tell you though, early in my career we would get the C&EI GP9's that had floor heaters as opposed to the roof heat (heat comes out from the ceiling) heaters we had on the Gp7's and those floor heaters on those 9's on a cold day really sucked and it would get cold up there in the cab! Oh, and did I mention those darn things were so noisy!!!

Many cabooses had generators attached to a wheel, which would keep a battery charged for a low voltage DC electrical service, primarily for lights, and later on, a two way radio. My guess is that an old generator on this caboose locked up and has gotten smoking hot. 😎

Brakeshoe sticking causes the smoke and smell. I report these instances because the wheel journal may overheat and break away from truck frame.
