As an Antarctic studies student, I am triggered by the misinformation regarding the Antarctic Treaty expiring in 2048.

Sure. The treaty is open for re-negotiation in 2048, but it has no expiration date. And abolishing the treaty in 2048 would require consensus amongst the treaty nations - which realistically will not happen. In my line of study it's basically a meme how many non-expert sources claim the treaty will expire in 2048. Plenty of otherwise truthful, well-meaning sources keep quoting this utter falsehood for some reason. EDIT: It's actually open for renegotiation right now, it's just the threshold to trigger a re-negotiation will drop in 2048.

​@@MrMuel1205It isn't even the Antarctic Treaty that reaches the threshold for calling a conference in 2048. It's the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. The Treaty itself reached that threshold in 1989.
