I actually had doctors use this argument on me. I was hit by a car about 3 years ago and broke several ribs and shattered my right scapula. I also had a small scratch on my head (which they wanted to stitch up. I said gtfo, I have done worse making lunch) and yet the doctors and nurses all went on about how I should wear a helmet. Never mind the broken bones, let's focus on something that would not have helped one bit in the crash and MAY have actually made it worse. Had they argued for body armor I would have at least had to concede their points were based on reality.

I am Colombian, and was visiting London with my daughter, it was her first time in London, so we took one of those double decker tour Buses, and I found shocking, that every time there was a bus stop next to a bike lane, the driver, would alert people getting off the bus, to be careful with the bike lanes and the reckless cyclists, when at the same time there was a very dangerous road with a lots of car traffic right beside it. coming from a less developed country, Bogota can't compete against London in many aspects, but one thing is for sure, Bike Infrastructure and Culture in Bogota, although far from perfect , is light years ahead of London

I cannot agree with you more! This has been the only video from this channel which kind of annoyed me because it doesnt discuss the cycling culture amongst cyclists. Some (of course not all) cycle very fast and are very careless. Of course not all of them, and of course with drivers and cars you also have many careless drivers, but for the most part I find that drivers in London are respectful of pedestrians (in Europe too of course), they may be rude and careless with other drivers but not pedestrians, whereas my experience with cyclists in London has been the opposite unfortunately.

@@salahd The thing is, when cycling is a risky business it'll be risk seekers that cycle... A whole other situation than in the Netherlands, where your grandma and your 8 years old can get around town safely. And they do. Our towns are not more roomy than yours, we just made different choices. By now three generations of drivers have grown up as full time cyclists. That phenomenon explains the lack of thrill seeking 'cycling culture' and petty tribalism amongst participants in traffic. It is the main reason why the "build it and they will come" strategy is so successful! If that's what you're looking for, you have to build it right! And start yesterday...

Funny how this video is almost like a mirror of what is going on here in São Paulo, Brazil. The previous mayor was very much a bike enthusiast and he begun to build miles and miles of cycle lanes. Same problems with cars, buses, shop owners and local politicians. But even with all the fight the process of turning São Paulo into a cycling city was moving forward really fast. Then he left office and now everything went to a halt. The cycle lanes are being left without proper maintenance, as a consequence cars and buses fell more empowered to be aggressive toward the cyclists, more people are getting injured or dying and we seem to be moving backwards. Shame. When will they learn?

Good, that will preserve your life way more than a helmet. In some places they have cycle-specific traffic lights which operate alongside the primary traffic lights, and change to green a few seconds earlier. @Thelondonbadger That's victim blaming: the cyclist should be given priority as that is the healthier way to travel. The bully, the driver of the motorcycle is the one at fault as he's doing damage to everyone by driving. Don't blame the victims: change the bullies to better behaviour (in this case driving where you expect small children/dogs to suddenly pop up around you).

We need an update where you explain induced demand and how adding car lanes, increased congestion, and removing them in place of other transport options for shorter distance journeys decreases congestion
@ArxInvicta
@ArxInvicta Жыл бұрын
Let's not forget that the theory of "induced demand" is exactly that - a theory. Recently, people made it into a bit of a magical phenomenon, where people apparently just buy new cars whenever a new lane is opened and then fill up that lane - which of course is rubbish. "Induced demand" is just a consequence of bad road planning and the fact, that many city and road planners fail to properly detect bottlenecks in their system. Or with other words, if the sparkling new 12-lane superhighway is being squeezed into a few narrow residential roads then of course, the superhighway will have traffic jams, even if you add a bazillion new lanes. This whole concept of "wider roads make driving nicer and therefore people use the road more, so as a logical consequence we need to make the life of drivers more difficult" is absolutely batshit crazy.
@xdn22
@xdn22 11 ай бұрын
@@ArxInvicta lol ur so wrong nobody is saying people are buying more cares whenever a new lane is added. bottlenecks are a part of it, but definitely not the only problem. lane expansions speed up traffic temporarily, but more people will chose that route more than before, as it has higher capacity. leading you back to square 1. you cant mandate everyone to evenly spread out traffic routes. people chose the most direct and best route. it is not a "batshit crazy" concept. it is quite literally causing an influx of demand. it is an objectively observable phenomenon. adding more car lanes is not going to fix traffic and it never has. the only way to reduce car traffic is to provide viable and reliable alternatives to driving. and that's just induced demand, i haven't even mentioned the increased danger of absurdly wide roads and their design language.

@geheimschriver People riding a random bike to a train station or shops is not at all similar to what hes talking about. In Japan the bikes are used to travel short distances quickly, not for commuting long distances. As someone who actually visited tokyo you cannot just ride your bike everywhere. The japanese way of doing it would probably work, super cheap designed bikes (some still don't have brakes) increases ease of access and storage areas at public transport, parks and supermarkets creates an actual use for every area. Riding your bike through traffic like a fuckwit and demanding the city get transformed so you can be an idiot isn't the same thing. In Japan its a convenience thing, in the west for some idiot reason its a virtue thing. Like you will note there is a lack of cycling infrastructure in japan, yet still a massive number of people ride their bikes.

I think one thing that Covid-19 has shown is that a lot of people would like to cycle but normally the roads are so terrifyingly busy with private cars that they don't. Once a majority of cars were removed from the equation, people started cycling again as a safe and pleasant means of transportation.

As a German, I was very happy to discover this channel! German traffic activists would normally argue in a very deliberate way, laying out the bare facts very humble. This, of course, does not appeal at all to car drivers. What does more appeal to them, however, is a commercial shot in a dusty/rainy/foggy Scottish or Norwegian landscape, featuring the penis pump they are supposed to buy. Let's hope both traffic activists and current car drivers discover your channel - it can be very invigorating to put some humour into obvious facts. Keep going!

That, and they are everywhere. In a lot of countries, separate cycling infrastructure is only considered a necessity in larger built-up areas, whereas the Netherlands has separate cycling lanes for pretty much every road in the country, with the only real exceptions being rural streets leading from and to farms, and even those roads, while lacking in separate cycling infrastructure, are still much safer to cycle on than pretty much any cycle lane in Britain or Germany or another cycling-averse European country.

No, let's be real smart and rethink Rush Hour!!! More remote working thereby eliminating the two inefficient spikes in travel patterns. We should be able to get rush hour travel demand closer to the level of travel at midday. No need then for bikes and empty cycle tracks during the day. No need for clogged up footpaths which makes walking a less pleasant experience. No need for over complex junctions which can revert to simple traffic slips/lanes with more space for landscaping. No need for all that lycra either nor wasted energy on extra showers.

Unfortunately there’s no obligation for bicycles to use an available cycle lane - you need only look at the junction at parliament square: as soon as the traffic lights turn red on the bike lane, bikes cross over the low pavement into the adjacent lane and Inevitably up the inside of left moving vehicles. I’ve cycled there in rush hour and have seen so many close calls

@mathew lawton Speaking as a Dane who cycles, this is true. When I get on 2 wheels, it's like all my normal conscientiousness is removed and I become a monster, who cannot recognise where other people would want to walk or where cars have the right of way. It's almost as though I think it makes me invulnerable, being on 2 wheels and being able to control my speed and direction to a degree I would never be able to on 4 wheels or on none, like it doesn't actually make me far more vulnerable than any carist out there, who will just have to hold back somehow from mowing me down.

I'm a Dane currently living in Norwich, and I am terrified not only by people cycling around Norwich, but how dangerous it is and how fast they are going. I am originally from Copenhagen, where we have really good bicycle lanes and in school we were taught as children how to behave as a bicyclist. Cycling is a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle to your citizens, and it can even be a faster way to commute too!

OMG I’ve watched this video like 10 times now and I’ve only just noticed the script on the computer screen at 7:42 😂😂😂 Now I want to see Jay stood naked at the top of a hill holding a bike aloft, shouting “I am the god of hell fire!”

I live in an area where they closed all of the side streets and rat runs and its made it a nightmare to get anywhere. I accept that i should use alternatives to driving but sometimes you just have to. Like taking stuff to the tip, moving into university. It is really inconvenient carrying heavy items on public transport. A big food shop for instance cant really be carried long distances easily.
