What really sets Amy Winehouse apart is not only her voice which was totally once in a generation, but also her songwriting abilities. She really was a poet. You should listen to Love is a Losing Game, a song that is equally beautiful as it is heartbreaking. She's one of the most influential artists in modern day music, we still see so many artists trying to replicate her sound and style but there will never be another like her. She exists entirely in her own league.

" I cheated myself, like I knew I would. I told ya I was trouble, ya know that I'm no good" The raw emotion and vulnerability hit home to the point where it's almost haunting! Knowing you have something that is so good but also acknowledging that your impulses and poor decisions will probably ruin it.. She exposed her soul to the world and delivered her lyrics like the musical power house that she is. Taken away far too soon but her songs will inspire artists for decades to come.. RIP sweet angel..

Same here, although I was in a phase of avoiding most music outside of clubs at the time, my housemate even used to mention seeing her at the Hawley Arms most Fridays and it went over my head, but for me the overt tabloid press fuss over her private life was a barrier, aren't they just generally horrible! I remember still being shocked and saddened enough to stand still in Woolworths in Camden when it was announced on the news though and I could hear the shocked whispers reverberate around the shop. Oh how the relentless march of time is so brutal!

True about Amy W, but... I feel like she's way better than any of the other names you mentioned. They have a lot of power, but Amy W had the greatest natural voice. Power isn't everything. A great voice. Lots of character. Matched with the right songs and music. That's where it's at, and that what we had from Amy. The others got famous mostly for showing off their capabilities. Amy just made great songs, no need to show off anything other than talent.

I don't listen to Whitney Houston or Celine Dion, but, had I not included them, I would be reading their fans having a little baby meltdown. Instead, I am seeing it from the non-fans. It's a KZbin comment. It is not the end all, be all list of who's better than who.

@@robertreichle1 I know exactly what you mean. Amy Winehouse doesn't feel like she's showing off with vocal tricks and makes it sound as if what she's doing is so casual. It feels more like realistic communication, similar to speaking, even when she is doing something impressive with her voice.

As soon as Amy Winehouse sings her first note, you just know you are encountering a power. Her musical backing is always spot on too. Have a look at Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love" - the All-Nighter version has a bit more punch than the original, which was popping anyway. In fact, dipping your toes into Northern Soul will be an interesting journey.

Never really listened to Amy Winehouse until recently. Her voice is natural, old soul bluesy that you don't hear anymore. I think the most talented and troubled souls gave us great art in the short time they were here. I think because it came from their very soul, they had to get it out. As tragic as it was to lose these people, Amy, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, too many to name, it would have been more tragic if they hadn't had the opportunity to share a piece of their deeply troubled souls.

Amber you said you didn't know drums could sound so jazzy. It was jazz that brought drumming to the forefront! For example, check out Gene Krupa powering the Benny Goodman Orchestra's epic 1937 roof raiser Sing, Sing, Sing, proof enough that drums can definitely sound jazzy! Krupa did much to make the drummer a featured player and not just part of the rhythm section. Two other great jazz drummers were Buddy Rich and Max Roach.

You need to do Joss Stone, her vibe is like Amy's. Soulful, effortlessly and powerful.

Yes! I keep suggesting they do "Tell me about it." Showcases her voice, bit of a hippie vibe that Amber would love. Jay would love the base line in it. It would be the perfect first reaction.

@@paulharrison6417 I wouldn't say that. Joss recorded her first album at 15 with the guidance of the legendary Betty Wright. When you get the attention of someone the caliber of Miss Wright & you're 15 yrs old , you've arrived. Amy & Joss are kinda apples & oranges. While both are soul based , Amy is more of a throwback despite the sound of the drums. Joss has amazing power to her voice that she can kick in at will. Check out her live version of Super Duper Love from Infinity Hall Live. One second she's talking with the crowd , next second that voice kicks in. They're both great in their own ways just depends which flavor you're in the mood for.

@@paulharrison6417 dude, stow that stanboy crap. Amy's great - no denying - but Joss Stone is easily as talented and an amazing artist. They're just very different styles. Joss Stone was killing it at age 15!

@@paulharrison6417 I enjoy a wide variety of amazing musicians. I positively enjoy the wealth of musical talent out there. It isn't a contest. Enjoying both is a win win. Everyone has top tier favorites (Personally I think Ann Wilson of Heart is the absolute best female vocalist), doesn't mean you have to only listen to them. That would be a very limiting view indeed.

Amy was a generational talent no question. You really can't go wrong with anything she did right up until the slide into the quicksand that took her from us. I suggest you next try Love Is A Losing Game. Add the word Legendado to your search for a B/W version that will blow you away just as it did me.

Amy Winehouse is the most amazing singer I’ve ever heard. Absolutely the best! Jay, you’re right. Amy Winehouse. All. Day. Long.

Amy picked the perfect collaborators -- her producer (Mark Ronson) and the band (the Dap-Kings, Brooklyn's own) were perfect for her. The band had that kind of relationship with another great singer, the late Sharon Jones. They played on her records, she sang on theirs, and they toured together. You should definitely check Sharon out sometime for Female Friday. Also, the main beat on this was at least partially sampled from maybe the most famous beat in the world -- "Funky Drummer," by James Brown (and the actual drummer Clyde Stubblefield). And finally, another Amy suggestion/request: "Love Is a Losing Game." Sounds like a lost Etta James track from the 60s.
