What really sets Amy Winehouse apart is not only her voice which was totally once in a generation, but also her songwriting abilities. She really was a poet. You should listen to Love is a Losing Game, a song that is equally beautiful as it is heartbreaking. She's one of the most influential artists in modern day music, we still see so many artists trying to replicate her sound and style but there will never be another like her. She exists entirely in her own league.

" I cheated myself, like I knew I would. I told ya I was trouble, ya know that I'm no good" The raw emotion and vulnerability hit home to the point where it's almost haunting! True about Amy W, but... I feel like she's way better than any of the other names you mentioned. They have a lot of power, but Amy W had the greatest natural voice. Power isn't everything. Never really listened to Amy Winehouse until recently. Her voice is natural, old soul bluesy that you don't hear anymore. I think the most talented and troubled souls gave us great art in the short time they were here. I think because it came from their very soul, they had to get it out. As tragic as it was to lose these people, Amy, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, too many to name, it would have been more tragic if they hadn't had the opportunity to share a piece of their deeply troubled souls.

Amy picked the perfect collaborators -- her producer (Mark Ronson) and the band (the Dap-Kings, Brooklyn's own) were perfect for her. The band had that kind of relationship with another great singer, the late Sharon Jones. They played on her records, she sang on theirs, and they toured together. You should definitely check Sharon out sometime for Female Friday. Also, the main beat on this was at least partially sampled from maybe the most famous beat in the world -- "Funky Drummer," by James Brown (and the actual drummer Clyde Stubblefield). And finally, another Amy suggestion/request: "Love Is a Losing Game." Sounds like a lost Etta James track from the 60s.
