The thing that strikes me as ususual is that back then, much of the training was harsh. It's so obvious and so delightful to watch such an amazing trainer with dogs that love him so much and are having so much fun right along with him!

Wow! The Aussies were awesome. But the Greyhound was the jawdropper to me. I had always heard that sighthounds were not very trainable. Guess we learn something new every day. This is absolutely priceless footage. Many thanks for the great upload!

What is really weird (and great) is that my Aussies started "acting up" when I started watching this video. One wanted to dance, no lie. Thanks so much for sharing this video -- is a must for all us true Aussie lovers!

found this on vetstreet.com In the 1950s and into the 1960s, Australian Shepherds Shorty and Queenie, trained by Jay Sisler, were part of his performing-dog act, which made appearances at venues ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Calgary Stampede. They also starred in two Disney movies: Stub: The Best Cowdog in the West and Run, Appaloosa, Run.

With some food, you can bribe an Australian shepherd into doing pretty much anything. We could probably teach my Aussie Shepherd to carry out a hit with some pizza crust.

I am curious how old his dogs lived to and if they had health problems later on from the repetitive activities. My now retired vet noticed a significant increase in spondylosis since agility and fly ball started, due to the repetitive nature of some of the movements.

A late, great mam knew that I really loved my aussie stuff when I was a kid and sent me a VHS with this and the classic Disney Aussie movies. I don't know how he got ahold of it. The originals had commentary, but for some reason it disappeared when I made it digital, and by then it was too late.

Kristin Tara Horowitz My Father was Jay's first Cousin, John Russell. He stayed, with his dogs, at our house every Fall so he could perform at the Twin Falls County Fair and rodeo. Jay would get the dogs out and do a performance for the neighborhood kids every year. We also visited his family at His Ranch in Emmett, and attend family reunions. What a wonderful bunch they were..(are). When I was little, we went to Emmitt to adopt a beautiful tri-color female Australian Shepherd puppy. We named her "Candy". I still compare every dog to the "Candy standard". Jay was an incredible guy in so many ways. That's why he could get dogs to perform at such a high level. It wasn't just technique, Stub, Shorty, Queenie, Gretta etc. just wanted to please Jay. He loved his dogs and they loved Jay. So did anbody who ever got to know him....I could go on and on. Thanks for your posts and dedication to the Dogs.

@supernaturalbc2009 - As far as I know, they lived long, healthy lives. These are some of the main foundations of the Australian Shepherd breed. I have a dog that's very much a throwback to these animals in size, weight, and attitude and at 9 she has no injuries and maintains a high level of enthusiasm and performance in agility, stockdog, frisbee, and adventuring.

Aussie's have such a weird stiff, bouncy jump... does anyone know what about their structure causes this?
@maculated5 жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite. Aussies are usually longer than tall. Which jump are you watching?
@maculated5 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what they're doing - in agility it's a fluid jump - but when they're jumping ropes and what not, it's choppy because of application. It's also dependent on attitude. I've seen that choppy bounce you're talking about when working because it's "playing" instead of trying.

I have a almost 5 month old Aussie. She's a black and white tricolor (meaning mostly black and white with tan points) I don't doubt her intelligence, but she is stubborn and a bone head and sneaky.lol We'd just be happy if she came when she is called and didn't try and steal from the table (i blame my dad on that one).lol She is going to puppy training soon. Thinking about agility training as something to keep her happy and active.
