IMO Nas is #1, dead or alive. But I love hip hop and all its savory flavors from NY, Down South and to the West Coast. At the end of the day its Hip Hop thats deeply rooted in Black American culture that Jay Z and all your favorite rappers have contributed too. I thank them all for their contributions and keeping the spirit of hip hop alive when once upon a time they said it wouldn't last and now we're 50yrs strong and a best selling genre with rappers of all races from all over the world embracing the culture ❤

NY had some whack rappers, but they were always better at gatekeeping for talent. Most NY artists of the 90's had classic albums. That falls off heavily in other regions without local bias. Every Rapper in Wu Tang has a classic solo album. No disrespect to Goodie Mob, but they just didnt have that. I'm from the South. NC to be exact so we had some east coast sensibilities while still being southern. During those times I remember growing up and hearing my older cousins playing Wu Tang and Onyx, then turn around and put on Pastor Troy and Master P.
@hitek9too255
@hitek9too255 Жыл бұрын
Because in NC we always had southern and northern/East Coast influences in our fashion, styles, slang, and hip hop. Plus, a lot of us have families and ties to the Tri-State area. That's why we never participated in this NY hate, North vs South, East Coast vs North stuff. Overall, I agree with your comment. I love Goodie Mobb, Master P, No Limit, OutKast, Scarface, Eightball and MJG, K-RINO, David Banner, UGK, T.I, Jeezy, Jermaine Dupri, Getoboys, MC Shy D, but other than that, Southern Hip Hop isn't that great, even when compared to the West Coast which is far superior. The overall talent level, quality, content, and lyricism is no way comparable to NY/East Coast rap. I remember in the mid 2000s to go from Canibus, Busta Rhymes, Lost Boyz, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, AZ to Franchise Boyz, ShopBoyz, D4L, Webbie was terrible. I even prefer the Midwest over Southern rap; they have Common, J.Dilla, Obie Trice, Bone Thugs, Slum Village, Royce Da 5'9", Do Or Die, Illa J, Binary Star, Lupe, Tech N9ne, Da Brat, etc.

He told on himself. He's scared the south will lose its position. At this point I don't believe it's about one place running things like back in the day. The game is wide open and the west coast and the south has helped with this. I'd never thought I'd see the day when the top artist would be from Canada (Drake) Furthermore, this narrative that New York fell off is false. As with everything, evolution occurred. If evolution doesn't occur it dies. The record companies (those who really run hip hop) understood this and looked elsewhere. You're not listening to what your parents listened to and your children will feel it's not cool (or current) to listen to what you listened to. The evolution continues

Nyc is one city. Putting an entire region of 110 million against one city is hilarious. Take Atlanta and put it against the rest of the south and nyc and see what happens. Atlanta don't even respect the rest of the south like that until it's time to talk about how unfair it is that ny is the mecca. If you're from Texas, Albany Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana ect Atlanta people will remind you fast that you aren't a "Grady baby". They do the same things that they accuse nyc of.

Lyrical Hip-Hop suffered because too many of the old heads was gatekeeping the new, young talent. People started creating their own lanes of getting on and now NY is left out, copying others to try to be relevant again. The biggest mainstream artist from NYC is fucking Ice Spice and Cardi B 😅 Then you got the dudes all in their videos, dancing n shit but trying to be drill rappers. No lyrical talent whatsoever.

These continued mentions of drake (lowercase intentional), seemingly being highly regarded is quite disappointing. A dude who’s been pretending for over a decade, stealing songs, flows, styles, caught with ghost writers and reference tracks getting respect from a Southern legend!? We know better than that. The younger HipHop audience can embrace that, but those who’ve been around to see the Culture grow from scratch need to stand on principle. Speak the whole truth beyond those selling points, cause the lack of integrity disqualify individuals being mentioned among the greats.

Jay Z work speaks for itself and New York owned the entire 80s and can argue Early 00s. The South got they run but realistically they really had the late 2010s where they dominated. I think cities like Detroit and maybe Memphis are running it now.

Sales doesn't equate to lyrical ability. It's a proven fact that some of the greatest rappers ever have been outsold by rappers who would never be considered great or the greatest. Nelly and 50 are just two examples. Neither will ever be accused of being great MCs.

Right! And this is going straight over people's head. Like they didn't just hear him start by giving Jay mad props. Fact is, ain't no #1 because everyone's #1 gone be different. Most people think Pac is #1. But not everyone. Some people think Nas #1. Or Drake. Or Wayne. The people upset about this is Jay Z fans. I guarantee if Pac was #1 on that list, NO ONE would be trippin imo. But the case would still be, who's making these lists and what's the criteria?

@@stankyrandy none are touching that album. He's the #1 businessman but not #1 rapper imo. To be honest, I don't know where he'd be as a rapper if Pac or Big didn't die. He gained the most from their deaths. And I bet he's thought about that too. He definitely filled the void. I always felt that's why him and Nas really went at it. To see who's #1 with them two guys gone. No clear winner out those two and then Em and Wayne came along.
