Dream Shop! My wife and I are currently looking to move again (just got here a year ago) now that our jobs are stable and we know our new area better. But not being forced to move RIGHT NOW makes it a lot easier to find the house we really want. Something with a shop like you have would be a dream come true but I'd be happy with something half that size. Well done, love these shop series of videos!

Just went through the cost breakdown on your site, and I've just got to say that I think it's very cool how smart you are about running your business. I see many business people that could use some training from you about staying out of debt. Well, and on the personal side as well. Not that you need to hear it from me, but I think you should be really proud of yourself and I hope that others are as inspired by your story as I am. Congratulations, Jay!

I have a Mitsubishi mini split 18,000 BTU system in my 22’ x 22’ shop. Fully insulated ceiling and walls and an insulated 16’ garage door with only a R6 rating. I’m just south of Houston where it is humid all the time. The system cost me $3400 installed and it runs 24/7. I built a “plenum” to sit on top of the air handler in which I have a 20x25 furnace filter. 1) this system keeps my shop cool and dry, 2) the plenum keeps the coils clean, 3) since it runs all the time, the air quality in the shop is really great. Even if I open the garage door to bring in lumber, the system recovers in only a few minutes. An added benefit is how quiet the outside compressor is, and it sits next to our patio, and it’s nearly silent. I highly recommend this system if you want to keep your tools rust free and work in comfort.

It sounds great Jay. Thanks for the information on the mini-split. My shop/garage building is 24x40 with 8’ insulated ceilings. We park two vehicles in the garage half so my shop is relegated to half the building. I think my AC contractor is planning on a 24,000 btu unit. Based on his estimate and the rate we’re saving for it I should be ready for it to be installed by February. Since I’m in San Diego about twelve miles from the ocean summers here are not as brutal as they are where you live but we do get a few nights of freezing temperatures each winter. Like you, I’m looking forward to finally having a climate controlled shop to work in. Enjoy your new shop. I’m looking forward to seeing what you make in it.

I put a mini split in my shop with 1" of closed cell foam all over. Works awesome. It has the added benefit of sealing up air leaks and making the building quieter in the rain or hail. I had the backside of my garage doors spray foamed as well ( they came uninsulated )

I have watched you from being the young man in the garage Jay.Like your business ,you have also grown in stature. I have been in business over 40 years here in the Uk, and at 66 i am now enjoying the fruits of my labour. The 22k this has cost you will hopefully last at least 10 years before further investment.that then works out just about 2000 dollars per year, or 40 dollars per week. That is a very small price to pay for your health, comfort and happiness in your work environment, so you made a good choice, and long may you continue.I hope to be watching your videos for a good few years yet, and would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family, the very best of health. From Garry in the Uk

Here in Australia it's not cost effective to have 1 compressor for multiple splits, so all the manufacturers suggest having a 1 to 1, multiple times. I love the way they do it in the States, it's so much tidier to have 1 compressor doing an entire house. I have 3 around my place so far, and I'll be getting a fourth this summer... I now have a wall of compressors and boy am I lucky i can hide them under my house!

Congratulations on finally having a finished look/feel so you can get back to working- looking forward to the builds. I DO HOWEVER, have to recommend that you get French doors (as suggested by others) or side rolling doors- cause you never know when you're going to have a very tall (and/or wide) project and it's a pain to tilt or lay down on it's side to get it below the garage doors on ceiling tracks... just a thought.

Nice job and congrats of the new place - well deserved. That spray foam will pay for itself and a lot of the other costs in energy saving over the 10-15 years. When the time comes for a new roof, consider white shingles. If you have the space, plant some nice maples around the shop for shade.

Jay...remember this about window tint...any time it's brighter inside than outside, the "mirror" effect is going to be backwards, meaning that people can see in, but you cannot see out. Since the first rule of shop lighting is "You can never have too much", there will be plenty of times ...day or night...when this occurs. This is true of any window, actually...if you have a window on the front of your house (untinted or tinted), unless the drapes are closed, if the lights are on inside and you cannot see what's going on outside from across the room, then that means that anybody going by can see right in. If you want to control the visibility into your shop, instead of tinting the windows, mill some lightweight channels and cut thin plywood panels to slide horizontally and slip them into the tracks. If you get real creative with this, you could put in multiple slots so that the panels would "stack" on each end and leave most or all of the window uncovered.

I have a shop heated and cooled with mini splits also. Just be aware, that they lose efficiency and ability to work properly in cold temperatures. My mini split was working 100% and only able to keep my shop at around 50 degrees in the cold Wisconsin winters. I had to install a ceiling mounted propane furnace to bump up the temperature a little when I actually went out to the shop to work. Also, the electric bill in the winter was huge. If you have the option, piping natural gas lines to your shop for heating during the winter would be the way to go.

I put a 3 unit mini split system in the upstairs of our home when I finished it. Love it. 2 ceiling cassettes and one wall mount unit. The. I put a wall mount unit in my 24x30 foot shop. Used an 18/19 BTU heat pump and it works great. I still need to spray foam on the underside of the roof and insulate the roll up door, but the unit is keeping the shop cool in SC, so once that insulation is done. It will be perfect. Best investment I have made in the shop.

Nice shop. Have the same HVAC units. I live up north where you have a "back up heat". I've switched the breaker off and haven't needed it for 2 winters. Your units should also have a "dehumidifier setting" great for basements and I would assume also Mississippi. I love their warranty and have had to use it. And they even went above and beyond to compensate a VERY unique situation. You might want to put up drywall on your half walls to help the 2nd floor, if you want to. Just a thought. Love the new shop and love seeing people who do it right the first time.

These units are quite common in Japan, and Japan's climate is quite diverse. The best way to save utility fee is to keep them on all the time, keep it moderate at the night, rather than turning it off each time you enter the space. You might want to consider installing a smart remote home system to change the temperature. Congrats on your new place! It looks tremendous.

Hi, I agree that the Mitsubishi units are very good. I live in Pa and installed 4 units in my house that was built in the 187o’s and then added on over the years. The contractor I use was very competent and recommended, in my case, that I use separate condensers and air handles for two reasons one the smaller the unit the higher the efficiently and two service and maintain is straight forward. The best to you.

Depending on what part of the state you are in you will need between an R30 to R60. Each inch is an r6.5 so if you want to in the future spray an additional 2 to 3 inches and those air conditioners won't work as hard. The walls are fine if they have 6 inches in them which I think that's what you did I'd hafta go back and re watch also the new doors will help tremdously as well.

Did you consider radiant barrier insulation? If so why did you go foam? In my old shop I used closed cell 6.5 inches thick on ceilings and walls and after adding 500 square feet of floor space didn't notice any difference in heat costs. I was in a very cold climate. Now that I'm in Texas I'm going with radiant barrier in my new metal building. I've read that radiant barrier in hot sunny climates can save 5% to 10%. BTW, your insulation runs about 6.5 to 7 R value per inch. I would think in your area that would be good.

I'm impressed you've been able to do all this debt free, I'm not even close to making money off my garage workshop, and I've put several grand on credit cards...

Good choice. I was comforted in two tours by the Mitsubishi. Worked great even in extreme heat and cold. Had one in my chu and our TOC. Come to think of it, I never spent much time in sleep state or not out

Great job. My local building code required fire proofing on any exposed foam. Did you have to spray fire proofing over your exposed foam in the ceiling?

Jay, Did the $2,539.89 you cited for dust collection in your cost breakdown cover the EF5 upgrade or just the Nordfab? I assume the EF5 upgrade was several thousand more. Mountain Light Woodcraft

I have the same roll up doors that u have. I am going to insulate them myself with an R13 double pack poly. Supposed to work well, the only real problem is the gap between the head roller, but will build out an insulated case to seal that off.

125* -> 83* is incredible! That's awesome. It would be interesting to see how much additional decrease you'd see from painting the roof a lighter color.

You mention the Mitsubishi HVAC Conversion pump working down to below freezing. If the price of gas or electricity is less than the power used to heat at low temps, then the efficiency of the conversion unit is less than the other power sources. One has to compare actual cost factors, not merely if the conversion unit will work, unless no other power source is available.
