A great recording engineer often contributes to the song's writing, composition, and vocal performance, taking on the role of a “producer” rather than solely an audio engineer. For this reason, a 1% royalty on publishing rights is justified. A great mix/master engineer not only collaborates on the production with creative input on elements like the beat and vocal melodies but often defines the sonic fingerprint of the recording. In doing so, they also function as a “producer” beyond the technical role. Therefore, 1% royalties on master rights are deserved for each role-1% for mixing and 1% for mastering. So, 1-3% in total should be allocated to your engineer(s) if they deserve it.
