Myth #1 you may not be a millionaire to buy a super car but you have to be in the top few percentile points in terms of disposable income. A V10 R8 Spyder would be my realistic dream car (Audi lent me one for a week) let’s say 80k with 10% down over 5 years that’s £1400 a month (most ppl don’t have 8k for a deposit ) and budget £800 a month for tyres, insurance, brakes, fuel, servicing and repairs for a total of £2200 a month. According to the ONS the avg uk household has £780 a month disposable income after bills. The avg household rent/mortgage is £1200 a month, so your affordable supercar is nearly twice as expensive lol You may not be a millionaire on paper but to say supercars are affordable is the result of living in the KZbin loads of money bubble, they simply are not viable for the vast majority, which is why we watch you talking about them.

All good points. Buy a supercar for the experience and sense of occasion driving it, and you can justify the running costs. You can also use it as motivation to get to whatever the next level is in your life. And for those who don’t know-Ferrari offers a warranty up to 15 years from manufacturer date. So while the warranty needs to be renewed annually, you can look at it as part of the running costs and avoid catastrophic issues.

Agree about the attracting blokes thing. Although, a few months ago when I pulled in to fill up, a lady who'd been driving behind for about 8 miles or so, did as well & came across the forecourt to say thankyou. She'd had her window down the entire way so she could hear the 'valves locked open' 360 properly.

Agree 100% on all myths lol. I recently sold a r8 v10 after 9 years, warranty’s $500usd a year, retained 90% value , low running costs and the value is impossible to beat. I sold it coz i find the huracan perf spyder provide a more dramatic ownership experience (design and color) even tho it cost more than 3X more and is hard to rationally justify, and yet at the same time they sound too similar for me 55))? justify keeping both. 😅th supercar: anything after the 458 era isn’t pretty (except pista) and I don’t need a faster car; mclarens are a great bargain but u don’t lust over it (uncertain reliability, too similar between models, weak sound, low price of entry)… and upkeep on the lambo v12s are too high. It’s very common for my friends to spend 5-30k on each repair, and very few mechanics regularly work on them, those that do charge almost the same as official dealers who won’t hesitate to rob u.😢 unlike the owners who buy these v12s new and won’t blink at a 30k bill, pple like us buy them at fully depreciated rates will lose sleep over the same bill… but that’s what make one lust over it… u want cars that u can’t get and the lambo v12 is the no. 1 stunt car. I have to wait until I find a mechanic that’s affordable who works on them regularly…

I enjoyed the film guys, you and Ant have a very warm and natural chemistry. I have a R8 GT coupe tuned to 572bhp (reviewed by Jayemm recently) and I rented a Tesla Model 3 dual motor in the summer which was the daily. In outright straightline performance the cars are similar and I tested that with some hard 2nd and 3rd gear pulls with my bro behind the wheel of the Tesla. The R8 did pull away but not by alot. However, I left him for dead on corners and most importantly of all is the difference in how you feel behind the wheel of a supercar. So low to the ground, the seating position, the steering wheel position, the power delivery with such a satisfying reward at the top end of rev range and that noise... Oh yes, that screaming V10 right behind your head and of course those sublime downshifts. I need a cold shower....

I think Myth 5 counts for any car bought by an enthusiast. Anyone who only cares about the power figure or the drag times over everything else is, to me, not a true petrol head. It's why Top Gear had the old "You're not a petrol head until you've driven a Lotus and an Alfa". Neither brand made the fastest cars, but Lotus' were the last word in handling purity and Alfa's are still a true Love/Hate relationship experience, because 'Cars are pain'. My own car, a '08 650i (No, I'm not trying to say it's a supercar, i know it's just a BMW), is a car I bought with Heart; I saw it, I wanted it. I drove it, I had to have it. I knew I could afford it and so I wasn't hurting myself financially, and it is everything I wanted. And even now, every journey, no matter how small or ordinary, is still something slightly special. It's not everyone's cup of tea, it's not that powerful given the engine size, nor is it that fast especially by modern standards, but I don't care in the slightest. I'm not trying to impress anyone with it except me. I want ME to look at my car and go 'Phwoar! I like that!!'. And I do. Which makes it perfect. As for Myth 3: An attitude I brought over from two-wheels (I had a full motorcycle license before a full car license); speed is fun, and there's a time and a place for it. Bikes are insanely fast, but if you're always speeding, then it's not fun any more. In fact, the faster my bikes got over the years as I upgraded, the less habitual speeding I do, because why should I need to prove I'm fast? And when I decide to poke the bike with a stick, I know it's going to well and truly blow my skirt up. And that makes it more fun.
@clinttube3 күн бұрын
Agree with everything you said: the biggest thing for me is how it makes you feel to own and drive. I like getting the most special version of an already interesting/unusual car that I can, even if it's largely indistinguishable from the more common variants. Always been a big fan of the 6-series like yours and wanted a 650i for years. I finally got a 2007 BMW M6 but it's one of the 703 they made with a 6-speed. Basically nobody is going to see the stick/realize it's 50%-100% more expensive than an otherwise identical V10 M6, but that's part of the fun. Same with my 2009 G8 GXP 6-speed - it looks very similar to other G8's that cost 1/2, 1/3, or even 1/4 as much. But I enjoy a rare classy sleeper 6-speed and the fact it's 1 of only 800 they built is known by nobody while I'm cruising around in it. I got the car for me; not to attract attention/impress people.

Almost every guy will look, especially as the Larini exhaust announces my arrival with a fanfare, but it seems almost invisible and silent to most females. Interesting that you note that there are many cars that are faster these days than suoercars. That, and the fact that you can get big horsepower pretty cheap now. Sometimes people will ask you about your cars “numbers” -HP, 0-60 etc I bought a gt3 991.2 and paid up for it. To non-car people they are often surprised that the car only has 500HP and (manual transmission) is just under 4 seconds for 0-60. A Shelby Mustang with better numbers at half the price - let alone the new Z06 costing less than my older used GT3. Even Mercedes offers AMG models besting HP etc GT3 at half the cost. So advice I’d give to super car owners is that they should be aware of these stupid conversations with “magazine drivers” who don’t get it.

The difference is just too much. I at one time had an F355 and a Rover 25 as a daily. That didn’t last long. The next 18 months in I was running four cars and they were Italian. 😄

Well, you may not need to have millions in your account ‘per se’. However, supercars fall into the category of luxury goods. Let's face it. Most of the time they are not appreciating in value. It's the other way around. You are spending with maintenance, spare parts, insurance, fuel, and other costs, all of that while your car depreciates. If you are spending more on amenities than on investments, you are impoverishing yourself on the long run. Take in mind that "car youtubers" don't use supercars as a hobby. It's their job. Those are capital goods to generate revenue through content and other form of sponsorship. Of course, car manufactures are interested in this type of narrative. They can sell more products to a slightly broader audience. Please, don't fall for those kinds of traps. Set your goals and one day you can enjoy those goods without going bankrupt.

First, when you're a kid, you look at the speedo and say WOW it goes 180. Then, you start driving and it is TOP TRUMPS because this or that car has a better 0-60 time. After a while, you just get older and your opinion becomes more subjective as per this youtube piece. Money does matter when buying an aspirational supercar. However, I would rather chat with a £15k car owner who has a real love and enthusiasm for their car than a £250k car owner who sees it as a status trinket.
